"If that were true, I would be able to run Win 95 on my Athlon 64 (for example). But since the source is closed (ie: not free), I can't make necessary changes to allow the kernel to boot on my new system."
You where forced to get an Athlon 64? You poor person, I realy feel for you.
"In Windows XP, there's that little Product Activation number you have to contact MS for to let you run on a brand new system, or if you change enough HW components to require recertification. MS could simply say "Sorry, XP is no longer supported, we can't give you a new Producet Activation #" or "It looks as if you are running illegally, we refuse to give you a new Serial #". Getting Warez to fix this is of course illegal, and the only legal way to get a serial number is to contact MS. MS has the right to refuse to give you that serial number at any time. This means that you don't own the OS since you can't install it on a new machine if MS denies you the SN. You are denied future installs"
Read the terms of service, they can do no such thing. Also, many (including mine) copies of XP and Office have no such activation system. Microsoft did block people with pirated serial numbers from installing SP1. They did not break the existing installs. If your going to hate Microsoft, at least do it for ratinal and well thought out reasons.
You must have been reading an abridged version. The nanites where built from carbon due to its abundance and tenselary strength compared to its weight. The Vitorians pulled their material out of the water supply, relying on the impurities that the rest of socity intoruced into it. Most of the nanites used clockwork or RF transmited power (a filiment that vibrates when exposed to certain frequencies of radio waves, same place that RFID tags get their juice).
"Ahh, it seems that's going by the wayside. Apparently Microsoft has been convicted of backing SCO by slashdot, although all the proof is circumstantial at best. Libel anyone?"
Boy are you in the wrong place, I'm sure many people here where picked on by Microsoft(R) backed school yard bullies. Microsoft makes their Free(tm) Beer go flat and steals their tube socks.
"With MS, you give them a check every other year, and that's it. With XP (and likely later), you don't even own the OS. MS can shut you down anytime they wanted to if they felt like it."
Lets call this Zealot lie #212. Nothing forces people to upgrade. Some people CHOSE to upgrade. If what you claim was true I wouldn't have to keep supporting all these users running Windows 95 and (lord help me) 3.1. They have not upgraded because they have no need of the new features. As for MS being able to "shut you down anytime they wanted to if they felt like it", do you have ANYTHING to back that up? What can Microsoft do to make my Windows install stop working?
True, Expensive != Better as well. However, in the context of the question "How do you beat free?" that isn't an issue. You beat free by making a better product. While it is not a popular view, I think that this is what Microsoft is and has been doing. The question for most people is if the cost is worth the improvments over the free product. In many situations it is. However, as you pointed out, if I'm just building a web server then there is no reason to use Windows over Linux. Solaris on Sparc with iPlanet servers over Linux could be choice for me however.
"Quite true, but remember the group you are talking about, many of whom seem to think that downloading music and movies for free with out compensating the artist/recording company/copyright holder is alright!"
Not sure why this is hard for people to understand given that they buy cars rather then walk for free and buy/rent houses rather then live in the park for free.
Lets do some more math, incarceration in a federal prison can cost upward of $70kUS per year of tax payers money. Do you spend $70kUS per year dealing with spam? I dont.
"Sometimes, IT spending is just plain mandatory..."
So is firing employees who cause unnecessary IT expenses. But it seems that the current managment thinking is that its the IT departments fault when other people look at porn and download spyware.
You first. Stop using email amd we'll talk. Of course you'll have no way to talk to me, but that sounds like a good idea. I for one have a problem with punishing everyone because some people are being jerks.
Interesting, however I've not yet found any information about "you.swf" other then an animation of a singing cat called "i love you.swf". As for the javascript, can't be done. You can make things that LOOK like a virus/torjan/etc but you cannot write to the local file system.
Bottom line is however that even if you can get a virus via a web page, thats more an issue with your browsing habbits then the need to have an antivirus installed first thing.
"Depends if you have open shares and are on a domain."
True, if there is another system with a virus on your network it can infect any open shares you have. But then again, in that case you have problems that a single install of an antivirus program wont fix.
"Also if you don't have your browser and email client patched there is a chance that a virus can be launched when you check your email or open a webpage."
By default even Outlook Express will prompt you before launcing an attachment. As for the webpage part, this has been claimed a lot, but no one has ever been able to point to a page that infects a computer.
"So what you are saying is that Windows is completely secure from a fresh install?"
Secure from what? Unless you downloaded a warez copy of Windows odds are it wont have a virus. Network security has nothing to do with antivirus software. Get a firewall, dont rely on the OS to provide security.
Maybe if you stop laucnhing all those "hotgirlz.jpg.exe" attachments and downloading warez you wouldn't need to install an antivirus program right away? Beleve it or not, but a virus will not just sneak into your system. It has to be put there.
So by your logic, Linux should just drop the whole GPL idea. After all, the OS nothing more than a set of instructions which may or may not be specific to that hardware.
" I buy a router/etc for the hardware, not for the companies excellent firmware."
The hell you say. A Cisco router is just a CPU and some RAM with a few IO ports thrown in. Its the IOS firmware and software that makes it do its thing.
" how can you condem them before you even hear there policy on the use of the trademark?"
Its realy very easy, all it takes is a desire to hate somthing. Just like the Linux & Mac haters that have never used the platforms or the Windows haters that think its unchanged since the broken Windows 95 systems they last used.

"In my opinion, rules like flanking and attacks of opportunity add a whole lot more tactical depth to the combat without slowing it down much. It's certainly more fun than combat in old D&D."
Depends on the class you play, some such sa the Bard have ben reduced to non combatents by the new rules. You say "I sing" on the first round and then go watch TV or something while the fighters start to dance around with their swords. I liked the older rules, which where more geared to role playing then the new combat/tactics system where the only needed atribute is STR.
Good news! Its a suppository.

Ah, fair enough. Sorta like the question of where does the power for your electric car come from. People dont like to answer those type of queries.
"Also, aren't RFID tags powered by electrical induction, not filaments?"
Indeed, my bad.

How the hell am I going to end up in Florida? Sure, there are a lot of transcendent individuals out here in California, but I never smoke the stuff.
That's because we keep getting pictures of you naked. Can't you take some constructive criticism?

I'm a bit worried about the .2 people, I prefer it when they stay down once I've cut them up.

Its for the same reason they refuse to publish my theory that FDR was a time traveling robot from the year 2620. They're just afraid of the truth.
Guess I should quit my current job then since I got it by sending out electronic resumes and you claim thats impossible.
