According to Popular Science, the steel plating was also high in sulphur, which makes the steel brittle. Add to this the very cold conditions, and the steel plates cracked instead of warping increasing the amount of damage the Titanic took.
No one is saying the ship would have laughed off the impact, but it could have survived long enough for help to arrive from nearby ships or limp back to port.
To be honest, I don't know a proper solution to it.
I do know that, just because a law is draconian and does have good intentions, does not mean it will be effective.
I was simply trying to point out the problem with ignoring the issue if indeed the actual statistics don't match up to the "1 in 5" lawmakers spew around.
...how low should the true rates of online sexual predator encounters be before we can consider it "not a threat"?
Now I don't actually have children, but if I were a parent even 1/1,000,000 would be too high if it was my child who was the victim. I'm sure not everyone on Slashdot is a parent, but I'm sure a high percentage have child relatives that you care about. This kind of thing is so horrible, you probably don't need a direct experience to understand how bad it is.
While I usually laugh at the "Screaming toddler kicked off the plane" headlines, sexual predators of any age group (even those of adult victims) disgust me.
Although I don't agree with making up statistics just to scare through draconian legislation, I also fear that if the true statistics came out significantly lower, then people would suggest that protecting children from online predators is somehow unimportant.
...they designed mosquitoes that were sensitive to Dengue Fever?
That way they would die before transmitting the disease, without wiping out the entire mosquito population? I would think that it would be more effective with a lower impact to the environment.
And it would be self-sustaining without requiring repeat releases.
...that hardware upgrades will happen more frequently? So if I buy Wii console version 1.0, that I could possibly buy a Wii game that won't work unless I purchase Wii console version 3.5?
I'm not very confident about where this is going.
I know that consoles routinely go through hardware changes and upgrades, but they all maintain a base level of compatibility. If that compatibility is going away, will we have to be buying consoles more frequently?
I'm sorry if I don't feel sorry for these a$$hats. We all know that they knew what they were doing, and that what they were doing was unlawful. If they're going to learn anything (obviously they weren't since they were changing their grades) its that decisions have consequences, and that life doesn't give you "do-overs".
Would they have acted differently if they knew they were looking down the barrel at 20 years?
Yep.
Now everyone else knows it to, which will hopefully deter them from trying something like this in the future. Letting them off too lightly will really screw up the message that this situation is trying to send out.
The only good thing from this HD hype is that CRT loyalists can upgrade their smaller CRT sets for larger ones at a fraction of the price it would have cost two years ago.
Sure, the prices of electronics always drops, but HD has accelerated this drop for CRT TV's
My girlfriend just upgraded from 20 inch to 27 inch for less than $300 Canadian! She would have gone to 32 inch for about $400, but the set wouldn't have fit in the cabinet. There's no way you can get a 32 inch LCD for $400, and don't get me started about plasma.
Now in your case, if your boss' set was free, then that makes a really strong case for NOT upgrading
That's the problem with a promise, you actually have to keep them in order to get credit.
Unfortunately these days, one gets credit for making the promise, then after the fanfare has died down, comes up with 100 reasons why they couldn't keep their problems.
Lets regroup next year and review what Microsoft has opened since today.
The Zune is so DRM laden and an example of "This is what we tell you that you want" that sales will only be great for a month before people regret their purchase and return them.
Case in point, their Wi-Fi "borrowing" crap. Instead of using Wi-Fi to do something useful, they simply use it as a reminder that they control what you do with the device.
I figured it was the beginning of the end when I saw JOE DIRT for the PSP. Now there's a movie I wouldn't even pirate, much less buy a second time for a PSP (if I had one
I agree. They didn't test the rivets themselves, but new rivets with the same amount of slag.
Slag doesn't just develop underwater, it is present from the beginning.
The steel in the plating and rivets was bad even for the time it was constructed, not just in comparison to modern technology.
According to Popular Science, the steel plating was also high in sulphur, which makes the steel brittle. Add to this the very cold conditions, and the steel plates cracked instead of warping increasing the amount of damage the Titanic took.

Screen scraping, which is what this is, may be against the site's policy, and might be illegal.
Besides, this solution generally requires high maintenance as small formatting changes tend to de-rail the scripts.
I was not using MythTV in the pre-Zap2it screen scraping days, but I understand that it was a veritable nightmare of script maintenance
$20 per year is difficult after it being free for so long, but in my opinion, it is well worth it.

In biology, we call this "natural selection".
So they can connect to what internet? This is the exact kind of lack of planning some commenters are talking about.
I really wish the CRTC would adopt ideas like this.

BenyGenerally speaking, criminals cannot be rehabilitated. There may be exceptions to this, but not many.
Especially with the more violent criminals.
While the rest of us decide that we want to use our freedom to better society, these guys have decided that they will operate above the law.

You are so right.
Besides, this upgraded security will only be seen on the "next" version of its OS. Screw the millions of security vulnerabilities out there right now!
Import it into Mythtv with mythfilldatabase: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/Mythfilldatabase
Look at # 3.2.3 3. Run mythfilldatabase with the --file flagI guess that's also a running tally of how many people who can't read the cruddy reviews about this thing.
I can see the first few thousand people being blinded by the lies, but why the rest followed them over the cliff is beyond me!
100% of console video game systems use a television as their primary front end. It has been this way since the Atari 2600 and earlier.
Now you know.

This is SLASHDOT, there is no chance of cunnilingus interfering with anything anyone here does
The Olympics are about physical achievement and performance.
Videogames do not promote such ideals. Otherwise we'd might as well add BEER PONG to the list of events.

Beny"What could possibly go wrong?"
What kind of stupid answer is this? Does a plumber tell you to fix your own toilet? Does the city tell you to fix the pothole?
What is the point of offering BETA versions and asking for feed back if the user is going to be met with "fix it yourself"
Honestly, I feel that it is the most ignorant response to expect everyone to be fluent in computer programming!
