"I dont mean to be rude, but expecting everyone to be of the same skill in operating a computer is moronic." ... "Also, treating everyone the same is best for microsoft."
So logically, the best thing for Microsoft to do (expect everyone to be a novice) is moronic. Way to prove the OP's point!
Have you seen the last episode of DS9? The one where they spend 3/4 of it in flashbacks, and the rest of it is idotic grinning faces around the station?
... A Duke Nukem movie would kick some serious butt.
No need to invent a protagonist, and plenty of dick jokes, witty catchphrases, nudity and violence too. What more could you ask for in a game/film crossover?
4) It's not that the single button itself is better, it's the philosophy that you should be able to do everything with a single mouse button. Just for fun, try to create a new folder on your desktop of your windows machine with only the left click.
I just did it with 5 clicks - do I win a prize?
(double click on my computer, click on up to go back to the desktop, click on file, click on new->folder)
I'm fairly certain BC3K isn't finished yet. Certainly the version I bought in '96 was of beta quality, and version 2.0 (oooh, shiny) released several years later was about as bad...
Thinking like that that was a contributory factor in causing Apollo 13's oxygen tank to go kaboom.
When voiding the tank after a test, a faulty thermostat left the heater used to boil of the oxygen permanently switched on. This would have been noticed if the teperature gauge inside the tank didn't top out at the high end of expected 'normal' operating temperatures.
If your speedo topped out at 55/65/75MPH (for example) you'd never know for certain if you were travelling at that speed, or above it.
Final Cut Pro... [is] a nonlinear editor, something which really can't be clustered effectively, especially not with dirt cheap boxes.
Take a looksie at Cinelerra. It's still under development, but it's cluster support is working fine already. I've used it with a renderfarm of 20 low end PII boxes (and if they're not dirt cheap boxes, I don't know what is), and it worked perfectly.
And before you accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about, I used to build and maintain clusters professionally.
Given the above counter example, can I accuse you of not knowing what you're talking about?:)
The joint Manchester University and UMIST Rocket Team have been doing some research on hybrid rocket motors (they use a solid fuel, but a liquid oxidiser, allowing the engine to be throttled). I believe they have several prototypes built. Of course, getting permission to launch rockets to a decent altitude in the UK is rather difficult...
In Dinorwig (small town in Snowdonia, North Wales) there's a pumped storage power station that works on exactly the principle you described. All the primary schools around here take their kids on school trips to see it in action. It's bloody scary when the thing changes over from storing to producing energy - changes from a relatively quiet whirring to a huge rumble as the water comes gushing down the pipes.
Apparently the biggest peak in power usage over the course of a day is the advertising break in the middle of 'Coronation Street' - all those families going and switching on their kettles.

Have you ever tried drinking Guiness quickly?
I've tried drinking Guiness quickly, and I can't say it's much different from drinking any beer quickly. I'm a member of a musical theatre society here in Manchester (MUGSS), and we have an annual cast versus crew versus orchestra versus old soaks boat race during our show week.
The rules allow you to choose your own pint (as long as it's beer), and as anchor of the crew B team, it fell to me to drink two pints back to back. I chose Guinness as my first pint, and Boddingtons as my second, the theory being the Guinness would line the stomach for the second pint. It kinda worked - I managed to get both pints down within about fifteen seconds.
Now, drinking two pints of beer back to back in 15 seconds isnt particularly comfortable, but I can honestly say that you can drink Guinness quickly, and the ill effects are no worse than any other beer.
BTW, the crew B team beat both cast teams... Luvvies are wusses!
I can't believe no-one's yet commented on this game being made by Frontier Developments. You know, David Braben and Co, the guys who brought us Frontier: Elite II and First Encounters. I can't be the only one with fond memories of touring the galaxy in my Cobra Mark III...
Bit of change of pace for them, but I hope it makes a ton of money, if only so they can finance the development of Elite 4 (which is probably an even bigger piece of vapour-ware than Duke Nukem Forever.
I use beta software all the time to do useful stuff, especially when there's no non-beta equivalent. I'd be a bit hesitant to use beta software for anything important, though...

Anyone know how this compares with BeOS? I was under the impression that (certainly for it's time) BeOS was the mutt's nuts for audio/video work.
(Is it called a "cell phone" or a "mobile phone"? Are they called "traffic lights" or "stoplights"?)
It's "mobile phone" and "traffic lights" The other two suggestions are just menaingless!
Don't blame me, though - I didn't vote for him.
Here's your 80MPG car: Get a Renault Clio 1.5l Diesel, and get over 100 MPG at 55mph.

"stop eating when you're not hungry, not when you're full."
It's that simple, but it ain't that easy. The Hacker's Diet talks a lot about how that piece of common sense doesn't work for most 'fatasses'.
I shudder at the thought that *any* web designer could think it's a good thing to take over my context sensitive menu.

Last time I looked (but please, correct me if this has changed) there was very little in the way of DVD authoring software for *nix...
I'd say The Green Mile is the exception that proves that rule - fantastic book, and an equally good film.

Luckily, here in the UK, we can still (generally) rely on the BBC to offer unbiased news reporting.

boxen is an accepted term, as is ubergeek, even though both of them make no sense unless you combine english and german.
...en is the Old English plural form which has been largely replaced by ...s. It's still used for adopted Old English words, like oxen.
