I think a good chunk of that cost had to do with getting the extensive archives of the New York Times into a digital format.
That, and the way that we are continually trying to slashdot them... not very successfully, either... must be hella-money for a slashdot-proof server cluster and bandwidth...
Heh, i just use the AdBlock plugin for Phoenix/Firebird/WhateverItsCalledNow. I have it set so anything matching "*/banner/*" dissapears as soon as the page is loaded - everything looks so much tidyer now...
Good point. need to get me a registration/spam account.
Even better - get yourself a domain.
Anyone who asks me for an email address gets theirdomain.tld@daedalustech.co.uk - that way I know where the spam has come from, but i can still get mail from people I want to.
Anyone who sells my address gets all the mail bounced, and forwarded to abuse@theirdomain.tld and/or what other abuse/support addresses i can find. Someone sells my address and theyll find out what its like to get that much crap in their mailbox...

What I think would work really well for me is to have it set up where I could use the tivo as normal and when I wanted to archive some content I could dump it to DVD.
Well... the TiVo I have here (the original Thompson one) in the UK has that, albeit not internal...
I just select the recording I want to archive from the "Now Playing" list, select "Save To VCR" (It even generates you nice Info screens) and start the VCR recording - Ive used it a total of once, and that was just to see how it worked... Cant see why you wouldnt be able to replace the VCR with a DVD Recorder...
Still, I dont think ill be using the 40gig I have on my TiVo soon, and even if I did, id probably replace it with 2 120gig drives... Anything thats good that I want to keep can either be bought on DVD, or pulled off usenet while they get round to releasing it on DVD...
... next week's "2003 Humidifier Vs. Dehumidifer Deathmatch"...
You know... I've always wondered what would happen if you put a humidifier and a dehumidifier in the same room together, and left them turned on...
Im betting either:
1. They basically swap the water between them, using vast amounts of electricity.
2. Theres a large explosion in a Matter/Anti-Matter kind of way.
3. The universe bluescreens/kernel panics (delete as appropriate), and they both simply disappear.
My money is on number 2...
Yea, its offtopic... kinda... but people need to know these things!
Im being serious - until you can just download something and run it, and Quicktime etc works perfectly first time (like... *gasp* Windows or the Mac), theres zero chance youre going to get any real inroads into the home desktop market.
If i devoted enougth time to it, I could get all my hardware working on Linux - the problem is all the hassle you have to do to get the most simple things working. Its just not worth my time... yet.
...they have forgotten to include a headphone jack...
Apparently (havent got my hands on one here in the UK yet - gotta wait till Friday), theres an adaptor that plugs into the power/recharge socket on the back/top that has the usual 3.5mm jack on the end.
I didn't know Sir Francis Drake was intimate with brass plaques.
I think he means 'Intimidated' - he was quite scared of them, as they kept threatening to beat him up and take his lunch money... not to mention his phobia of Sailors...
It appears the whole "UN Weapons Inspectors" and "Weapons of Mass Destruction" thing has been a carfully plotted publicity stunt!
Anyone remember the old advert for C&C? The "High Scores" one, with the pictures of Dictators? It looks like they have taken it a step further this time, faking a whole war - they even had CNN and the BBC taken in this time, tho.
Bah, adverts on Gravestones... people changing their name to 'Turok' for money... and now this. Whats next? Simulating a real war, complete with 1,000s of extras shooting people in the street?
On launch day, a piece of insulating foam on the external fuel tank came off during liftoff and was believed to have struck the left wing of the shuttle. NASA said as late as Friday that the damage to the thermal tiles was believed to be minor and posed no safety concern during the fiery decent through the atmosphere.
I'd say they were a little wrong, looking at the result...
(Anyways, arent these game jokes supposed to have Duke Nukem Forever somewhere?)
Can we just sort out the "more naked women" bit for now - just as a proof of concept, of course...

Buh-bye ads!

Remeber, there are also DVD Recorders with PVR (albeit, not TiVo) functionality...

Ah well, never liked my server anyways...
Er... you mean... they dont already?
I thought thats what I had, it does heat the room pretty well...

And who said Linux isn't easy to use, eh?!
Me. And you just backed up up right there. :)

Heres hoping...

You know... The problem seems to be series that start with 'F' - I suggest anyone starting a new series beginning with 'F' drop the first letter
Family Guy - Amily Guy
Firefly - Irefly
Farscape - Arscape
Well, its worth a try... Anything is better than whats replacing them...
Didnt this already happen a few years back? Bloody Taco and his dupes!
Yep. Over the winter, I use my PC left on 24/7, running the United Devices Client, to heat the room its in - no need for 'real' heating.
In the winter, the machine is overclocked to 1.7GHz (from 1.0, ahhh AMD...) and during the summer, its set at 1.2GHz or it overheats.
Im sure other people use their PC to heat the room/house...
To quote the Bit:
YeS... YeS... YeS, YeS, YeS, YeS, YeS, YeS, YeS, YeS, YeS... Noooo!
In that case, you'll also likely remember the words (in authentic WOPR from Wargames tones): "The ban-shee way-uls at you and no-thing happ-uns"
Ah, those were the days...
Why? The bigger ball, size of a small Pool ball?
Amazingly about half of may spam comes from the address I subscribed to Freeloader with, years ago.
It just gets forwarded back to them, now - dunno how that happened. ;)
Its probably because of the way it can only turn right angles, and leaves a two dimentional wall behind it wherever it goes.
*shrug*
I think he means 'Intimidated' - he was quite scared of them, as they kept threatening to beat him up and take his lunch money... not to mention his phobia of Sailors...
I have no idea - I was going to make a 'HAL9000 from 2001' comment here, but Im worried it might be actually On Topic...

Possibly the only good use of the horrible "Windows Marquee" screensaver.
