Can people post howto's or give some explanation on how they use Asterix? There is little information on their web site other than a list of supported hardware. It looks like there is a 10$ modem (Intel winmodem?) that can be used with it??
Is this the only thing you need in order to use Asterix or do you need to invest a lot of $$$ in hardware?
I'm also curious what kind of setup you need on the phone side? ISDN? Normal phone line? Can you do VOIP from 1 Asterix to another? (across continents) etc etc.
I see a lot of comments about how apt is so great but let's not forget that apt is now on Fedora and that you can also install an internal distro using YUM (which I think is better than apt).
Don't get me wrong, I use Debian, Fedora and Redhat. But for a medium to large business, I'd definitively go with RH enterprise because of support. For home or small business, any distro would be fine unless you run some application that require a specific platform (think oracle, large backup solutions like HP/Veritas, etc).

One study which examined the link between gun ownership rates and firearm deaths within Canadian provinces, the United States, England/Wales and Australia concluded that 92% of the variance in death rates was explained by access to firearms in those areas.
Canada is the closest neigbourgh and why is the ratio so low? They ban all handguns and you need to register all rifles.
I'd be more worried about Gun control than game ratings. You can buy a gun at walmart and yet you can't buy CD's with parental advisory stickers??!? What's going on in this country?
Yes, mom or dad bought the game, but what the hell were those kids doing with an unlocked gun? Those parents are as guilty and should be jailed by now.

They said that it's not possible to easily remove the code since it consists of millions of lines. Well if it's so damn hard to fix it within a few months/years, why don't they show it? Even if you have an army of coders working day and night, you can't replace millions of lines in a few days. In order to prove that you didn't "copy", you'd have to start from scratch and write new functions, etc.. Not just change variables.
If there are million of lines, they can probably show a few of them to prove their point.
Obviously, the database isn't a plain-text or an excel sheet. It's gotta be some sort of SQL server (I would hope so!)
So our "cracker" had to be smart enough to take a look at things like netstat and see where his tool/application was connecting and then maybe he could do some sort of "select *...."
Maybe those commands were viewable via "string" or "notepad.exe" (if Windows).
You can't simply "access" that data, you have to dig for it. Maybe he was an IT guys as well and then, things are much easier (unfortunately).
Losing a $50 256M card ain't so bad, but a $1500 card that is worth 3x the price of a camera is another thing. Personally, I have a 128M card and I can store about 120 pics @ 3.3MP. It's more than enough for me.
I'm concerned about data corruption and I would rather transfer the pictures to (a backed up) disk ASAP. I wouldn't feel like having my entire picture collection in a backpack and lose it.
On the other hand, I do see a use for my Zaurus. I could put a lot of DivX for long flights... I'm limited to about 1:30 movies on my 256M CF right now...

More and more work places are banning USB devices so this will be a problem. No floppies, no USB devices. Maybe GmailFS?
Aren't there some open source alternatives to the GoogleFS? Are they "production stable" ? Would we benefit from Google releasing some of that code?

We actually tried to find the timezone and set our transfers so that they would be done when it's night over there.

I can't see a difference. No lag or anything. We use cisco phones and they are pretty neat (sorry about the plug)..

Isn't what all OSes do? Take a binary and read it bit by bit and then analyse each bit and convert it in understandable format by the CPU?
