I totally agree with removing the term master/slave from technical documents. I am of German descent and my ancestors were enslaved by the Romans. Any reference to slavery is offensive to me. Also any reference to Latins, since my great-great..great grandfather was probably enslaved by people who spoke Latin. I propose we no longer use the term Latin America or Latin Music. I am still wating for my reparations check from the Italian government. Do you know how much an Iberain mule and fourty acres of Carthegian land would be worth in todays cash equivilent??
Hello? Did I not suggest this a few months ago right here on Slashdot? I will be suing Senator Dayton for infringing on my prior art. All the e-mail taxes belong to me!
Why buy another format? I still have my collection of over 500 vinyl records. Some I bought in the mid-70s and they have lasted, since I take care of them and only play them on a good turntable. An LP is a piece of electronic equipment and requires care to last.
Another format to replace CD's? I didn't buy into the 8-track or quadrophonic fads, why should I switch now?
Don't try to compare Pearl Harbor with what happened on 9/11/2001. In the case of Pearl Harbor we were attacked by a nation with an army and a navy that we could fight back against. In the case of 9/11 we were attacked by terrorists who had no national base. Bush has used the confusion in the American public that blames all Muslims and all Arabs for the attack in New York to justify his Anschluss of Iraq. "Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind..." applies more to Bush's policies than to the consequences for the people actually responsible for 9/11. America's status in the world and the goodwill of Muslim nations who were allies of the U.S. have been blown away by this administration's knee-jerk reaction.
I usually use Macs at work, but my wife bought my son a Dell with XP. It couldn't even modify a photo file. First of all the extensions are hidden so you can't see what type of file it is and you don't have access to the hard drive so you can find applications. We tried to open the photo from the editing software when we did find it, but it didn't see the file, even when it was on the desktop. I'm just glad my office manager likes Macs, otherwise I would get a job raking leaves.
The thing about the Star Wars (and Matrix) sequals is that they get so hyped up and discussed (for example in on-line message boards) before they are released that we are bound to be let down when we actally see them. If either Star Wars I or II were released by itself I think that they would have been well received at the box office and created thier own fan base. The special effects were great and they both had a good plot and good action scenes. Given the three year wait for III, I think a lot of people will be disapointed by a movie that may well be able to stand on its own merits.
Downloaded OpenOffice for OS X and then it told me I needed X-11. Didn't feel like messing with it, so I deleted it. If they had OpenOffice for OS X alone I would use it. Otherwise I will stick with plain old Apple Works.
I am sorry to see that Google is going public. Look what happened to Yahoo. The e-mail program is almost unusable, since it won't let you send messages to more than five people for fear of spam and now it won't even let you "reply to all." Yahoo/Geocites is full of bugs. You can only upload one file at a time and can't use FTP. It adds useless code at the end of each page that you have to go in and erase. The list goes on.
One can only dread a Google-Microsoft merger. Microsoft's search engine is clearly slanted towards Microsoft products. Try looing up Linux on MSN. Google has manged to remain pure. The results paid for by advertizers are clearly marked in shaded areas. Will our old public internet remain or has it already given way to coporate greed and incompetence?
I'm still using Claris Home Page 3.0 after 5 years as a web master. Its consistent, switches easily to text and intergrates well with FileMaker for the web. I know I'm behind the times but why change a good thing. I wish FileMaker/Claris was still supporting Home Page, a new version with style sheets and PHP and/or JavaScript would be nice. One can only dream.
I thought, accoriding to recent news reports, that we will be able to get energy from water. I guess it will take a few years for science to do this, but technology will take care of everything. Don't worry about all that entropy and molecular energy level stuff. It will all work out, and we will soon be able to just pump sea water into our gas tanks.
Newspeople seem to love headlines that imply that we can get energy from water. This is often the case whenever there is some new development in hydrogen power. Water has hydrogen so it must be a source of power, they don't mention or fail to realize that it takes energy to get hydrogen out of water in the first place. Its unclear from the article if there any anctual gain in energy coming out of the system. How much energy is required to get the water to flow, does a voltage potential need to be set up before hand, etc.
I gave up reading the article before the end of the first page. I don't care how he looks, or what his kids had for breakfast. More substance less fluff. Isn't Wired supposed to be for nurds, or is it just for dentists's waiting rooms?
OK, I suggested this a few months ago, right here on Slashdot. I proposed charging or taxing e-mail, even at.1 cents a pop (pun intended). According to the DCMA this is prior art so: "All your e-mail charges is belong to us." I expect a check in the mail shortly.
I'm waiting for the "Do Not Spam" list. I get at least 50 spam e-mails a day. Sort of annoying as I administer a number of web sites and am dependent on e-mails for my job. Besides, I am quite satisfied with my current dimensions.
Well, finally some good news. If it will soon be possible to produce cheap solar cells this could mean a more distributed power base. If houses and businesses can generate most of the their electricity from solar cells on the roof the average consumer would no longer be dependent on the local power company. It remains to be seen if the current administration with its ties to the oil corporations would let this happen.
The CNN article does seem to confuse Watts and Watt-hours. CNN.com's science writers have always had a weak understanding of scientific concepts. In an article about the close approach of Mars they said "About every 26 months, the two planets pass relatively close to one another, during periods now known as opposition." What was it known as before??
From Einstein's Bio:
Then Grossmann's father tried to help Einstein get a job by recommending him to the director of the patent office in Bern. Einstein was appointed as a technical expert third class.
Einstein worked in this patent office from 1902 to 1909, holding a temporary post when he was first appointed, but by 1904 the position was made permanent and in 1906 he was promoted to technical expert second class. While in the Bern patent office he completed an astonishing range of theoretical physics publications, written in his spare time without the benefit of close contact with scientific literature or colleagues.
It sounds more like "Colossus: The Forbin Project," a movie made in the 70's when the net was just a twinkle in Bernard-Lee's eye. The movie is about a defense department computer that links up with a russian computer and together they take control of all the world's nuclear missles. Eventually they take over the world for the "good of humanity."
This movie, like may others assume that machines will one day become sentient. Something that hasn't happened yet, but who knows what will happen as computers and computer networks become more complex.

Isn't goatse where the Beatles go the inspiration for their song "The End"?

This reminds me of the song "Werner Von Braun" by Tom Leher. It ends:
...In German und English I know how to count down
Und I'm learning Chinese, says Werner Von Braun.
How about getting the hell out of Tibet before invading the moon.

So does anyone know the current status of the lawsuit. Apparently it hasn't stopped Apple (computers) from continuing to expand iTunes.
Reminds me of an old joke: Why is Yoko Ono like a lizard?
Because they both live off a dead beetle.

Who says "Ruse de Rourse, Ruke."?
Scooby Wan Kenobi.
ha ha ha
Off topic but stuck in karma hell anyway. I dream of becoming a hungry ghost.
