  1. Already possible with the PPC-6700 on USB EVDO Modem Without PCMCIA · · Score: 1

Hi all, Although it gets lousy battery life and is a bit sluggish compared to a blackberry, the Sprint PPC-6700 allows you do the very same thing without having to open a $60 data only account with Sprint. Even better, they allow the phone to not only work in a tethered USB mode, they also support bluetooth if you happen to be on a Mac. Speed is pretty decent, tethered to USB I get about a half a megabit. I get less bandwidth with bluetooth, but it's certainly much zippier than a 56k dialup.

I can confirm for a fact that the devices are indeed windows. I had a similar conversation with the kid at my local Apple store who also confirmed the device was running Windows CE/Mobile (or whatever they call it these days). He did qualify his answer by saying the thing would lock up constantly :).

  4. I switched to Blockbuster on Blockbuster's Offensive Against Netflix Flops · · Score: 2, Informative
I switched from Netflix to Blockbuster's mail service last year and haven't yet felt the need to switch. I'm still on the original $14.95 pricing plan for three movies out at a time. Yes, Blockbuster's UI is inferior, the selection might not be as vast, and it might take an extra day or two to receive a flick over Netflix, but the real deal are the coupons.

Blockbuster gives two in store coupons every month good for a game or movie rental. With their game rentals hovering in the $8 range, it pretty much pays for itself every month. Blockbuster also credits the value of the coupon against the 'keep it' price for any video or game rented at the store. Good deal (for me at least).

  9. Why Christmas? on Xbox 360 Launch To Be Gradual · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think Sony got it right with their release of the PSP outside the holiday season. They were able to meet the demand of the early adopters and had time to build up inventories for the holidays this year.

I've always wondered why these console manufacturers wait until Christmas to release only a trickle of hardware into the channel. This stifles profit growth, as we all know they make their money on games vs. the hardware.

Wouldn't it make more sense to release off season, satisfy the early adopter purchases, then build up inventory for the holidays while reaping the profits from game sales along the way?

    Maybe I'm just crazy.

I'm not sure what the laws are at Google's new location, but here in Connecticut business property is taxed in two different ways.

First of course is the actual property itself (the land and the building) second is the assets the company owns. The building and land taxes are typically paid by the owner of the building and passed onto the tenant in their rent. The other property is billed directly to the tenant.

My business owns a building that is leased to a manufacturer of sporting equipment. We pay the tax on the building, he pays on his manufacturing machines, computers, forklifts, etc. I can see why the city is very interested in Google's arrival, I'm sure there are literally millions of dollars in computers being moved into that facility.

Kudos to NASA for being entrepreneurial and finding a tenant for an otherwise unused space. But the city also has a legitimate beef here. Google should pay its taxes just like every other business is expected to.

And I also don't think we'll even see a 'leaked' development version in the wild anytime soon. Apple is distributing the dev kit installed on hardware and not on CD. I would venture to guess they are doing that for a reason.

Apple is also a company used to having their software run on a pre-determined combination of hardware and software. I suspect these dev kits are no exception. Even if it somehow leaks out, I highly doubt it will work on any 'ol wintel PC simply due to a lack of drivers.

I think that it takes a little bit more than luck to be successful. It also takes the drive and ability to take that opportunity and make it something more tangible.

IMHO much piracy is due to impatient souls who simply can't wait for the release. Music is a great exmaple of this. I say when it goes gold, release it. Many of these downloaders would probably pay for it.
