Hey, I wouldn't mind the government wiretapping me if I knew when it was going on. The thing is, they're taking away my privacy but not theirs. They want to keep ME ignorant of what exactly it is they're doing.
I'll show them mine if they show me theirs.
Sounds good to me! Of course that's not much solace if you know you're being watched all the time ala 1984.
Yay, another ignorant, there are certainly an abundance of people on slashdot who have the "I have nothing to hide" mentality.
Translation: "You're stupid, just like all the other people that don't agree with me.".
You say pirate software, sure it's illegal. But what I visited web sites or downloaded materials related to religions? or sexuality? completly legal materials. And imagine an agent, who has his own moral views and decide he dosen't agree with what you are doing, even tho is completly legal, he can make your life a living hell, this goes for most everything, our privacy is the most important part of our freedom, because other people don't always share our views. Especially on very controversial issues.
Translation: "An authority exists which has the potential to abuse it's power, therefore this authority must be kept weak by other methods, particularly ignorance."
This argument can be applied to remove any law enforcement. Yes, officers with bad attitudes can harass people for any number of reasons, race, sexual preference, or maybe they just got cutoff by a different white Honda on the way to the station this morning. Each of the previous three examples is wrong (as any crime), will always happen (as any crime) and should be punished (as any crime). Trust in law enforcement is a cornerstone of our society and should exist without all of us covering our tracks in daily life like criminals.
I'll go ahead and assume you're just a youngin, because any adult in his/her right mind knows this, and knows that the ability to believe in what you want is the real freedom, without having people in power being able to discriminate.
Translation: "I couldn't come up with any better arguments so I'm going to resort to name calling again."
Look, I understand that power corrupts. I strongly support individual rights and personal freedoms. But I would prefer to have these freedoms not through the furtive actions of looking over my shoulder to make sure no one is watching, but by the pervasive understanding throughout our society that we respect and even support one another's freedoms. To paraphrase an earlier patriot, I may not agree with what you (legally) do, but I will defend to the death your right to do it!
Note: I will also defend your right to resort to name calling, though I similarly reserve the right to hold it up to public ridicule. Done and done.
Many military radios can do frequency hopping - changing frequencies many times a second. So unless you have a similar device AND you know the algorithm, AND you know the starting frequency, AND you know when the radios were turned on...
I use to work on military communications. The version I worked on switched frequencies about 10,000 times a second. That was ten years ago. Not only is this harder to track, but even more importantly it's harder to jam. Keys were changed daily.
How are you supposed to do when you want to contract something if you can't prove who you are ?
Whenever I try to contract something (such as in a bar or nightclub) I generally attempt to avoid providing details that will let her track me down later.
Why do you wacky American's call it a "cell" phone? What is "cellular" about it? I (British) call it a "mobile" phone - because sic.
Because "cellphone" is one word, two syllables, whwreas "mobile phone" is two words, three syllables. It's shorter, easier to say/write, and gets the job done just as well.
Why do you wacky British always gotta have it "proper" even when it's a pain in the ass?
There is no legal reason why the victim should be obliged to pay.
And your basis for saying this is...? You have a copy of the contract they signed where...? Your degree is from which law school...?
As someone said above... stupidity should be painful. This seems to be a step in that direction. Granted AT$T is making money off it, and it wouldn't be unwise to contest it. But sweeping generalizations about legality are just as silly as leaving the default password on your account.
think I am biased against flash since Flash as a video delivery tool is like requiring an extra plugin to view something that should be handled by the video plugin in the first place.
BUT more importantly, Flash does not stream video easily unless it is from the flash server. Video embedded in a flash movie must be completely loaded into memory before it plays - no streaming sections from the hard drive.
Actually streaming video through Flash isn't very hard. If you can do JavaScript you can stream video in Flash. Even more importantly, you are completely incorrect about video being completely loaded before it plays. This is just plain wrong. You can track the download progress and play it as it comes in, and even track how fast it is downloading and automatically buffer the appropriate amount!
It said the experiment taps the unlimited potential energy source of those who have the ability to post within seconds of a headline appearing without actually reading the article.
By their estimates, this should be enough to power mankind for the foreseeable future.
I, for one, am not prepared to trust that the individuals running these organisations will do so in an ethical manner especially given big business's track record.
The track record in this case was, gasp, sending coupons.
I agree that there needs to be monitoring, but that the danger is also highly overrated. Most "big business" simply wants everyone to be safe, happy, consumers. That's hardly frightening even if it is a bit... pastel.
However each time they have been getting more and more accurate until last time I actually used all of them on things I wanted.
Oh my god! You got coupons you wanted! When will the horror end!?
Privacy reflects shame, fraud, or intimacy. Since the government doesn't care about your valentine's day cards, which of the remaining two are you engaged in, and why?
I have firsthand experience using offshore labor (hiring programmers for small to medium jobs).
We found one AMAZING guy in Russia. $15/hour. He's not always consistent (he's 23, just got married and still setting his life up) but he understands and does what he's asked in a reasonable amount of time.
Two other programmers from Russia and two others from India were either incompetent, incommunicative, or both.
I'm not worried. It will take a LONG time for them to train to our standards, and when they do they simply RAISE the amount of useful labor produced and therefore raise the quality of life for us AND them.
I've worked in the video game industry and of course there are "backdoors" in all the products. These codes are part of the fun for both the dev team and the elite gamer. We have about a dozen different easter eggs in various products we release. I am always surprised to see the following as the codes show up on websites:
Codes we share amongst ourselves (dev team and with the testers) get out. This is obvious.
Some codes that I do not share amongst the team got out. And these are complicated as HELL. Like doing a series of things in the game and it having another effect minutes later that you must also know to activate. I show just a few people that these things are even possible, without sharing how. (Yes it's fun to feel cool.)
Some codes that others added that I do not know about show up in public.
Conclusions: No backdoor is safe. Once released (or delivered), the code is in the hands of the enemy. Period.
Corollary: People have way more time on their hands than they should.
But, but, but, why would they be connected and sending spam through your server? Unless you run an open relay. And you don't run an open relay, do you? Do you?!
Now if there were only a way to use Bayseian filters to detect people who didn't RTFA and slow down their ability to post.
A music industry trade body launched on Monday electronic identity tags to keep tabs on Internet music sales in a bid to compensate musicians and song writers as more of their works become available online.
If that isn't leading I don't know what is. They specifically do not mention the RIAA and are trying to portray it as compensating the poor artists as opposed to saving music industry executive's asses.
I'm referring to Nintendo's statement that emulation is, in and of itself, illegal. They did not provide any qualifiers such as 'unless the copyright holder is doing it'. They stated flat-out that emulation is illegal, and now they profit from emulation.
I see. You are being intentionally obtuse.
I suppose it is also hypocritical when software companies state it is illegal to duplicate software and the government states it is illegal to shoot people. Do we need a 20 page qualifier of obvious exceptions everytime someone makes a statement? No wonder we are swamped with lawyers!
Their hard-nosed stance on emulation is hypocritical, actually. Nintendo representatives have gone on record as saying that emulation is illegal, period, offering no qualifiers. Oddly, the recent hit Metroid Prime offers a full version of the NES Metroid, played via an emulator on the Gamecube.
Are you being intentionally obtuse? The fact that they are SELLING their full version of the NES Metroid in whatever manner means that a FREE version via emulation reduces the value of what they made. This would seem to prove their point.
You lack imagination - under civil forfeiture laws the cops can grab the house and the owner has to put up a bond and prove he wasn't using it for a crime.
Yup, welcome to America.
Ah, I see. We have a law that is too broad and simply doesn't employ common sense. Let's add MORE laws that are too broad and simply don't employ common sense to fix it.
Have you considered working for the IRS?
I can't believe this got modded as insightful. Fix the problem, not the symptom.

No, in the end we'll just be asking each other "Would your Robot Master like fries with that?"

A little scary, isn't it? National ID Cards are just one more step down a quite similar road. Please Vote!
Ummm, wasn't the title of the article "No ID Cards in the Future"??
1. Listen.
2. Pass through pre-conceived political axe to grind.
3. ???
4. Profit!

Flash is more cross platform than any other movie format.
MPEG ?
Errr, yes.
1. Download Flash Plugin.
2. Watch movie in browser.
3. Profit! (or at least enjoy).
Flash, it's not just for vector anymore.
Excellent. Flash just shouldn't be used for video. Thanks.
Do you think that because you are biased against Flash or because you dislike platform independent, in browser, video delivery systems?
I certainly would not recommend Flash for text heavy applications, but not for video? It's PERFECT for video. Right tool, right job, all that jazz.

Is that the great, exalted Robotech? What's the deal?
The deal is that it was the very first anime many of us ever saw. You're right, the "quality" is terrible...
...until you compare it to GI Joe, He-man, and the rest of the action figure shoveling commercials that posed as animation at that time.
Try not to feel too old when people are scoffing at the non-HDTV pictures you enjoy so! Sheesh! I'm only 32!

I'm sorry I must have been a bit a unclear. I meant they were hiding the connection.
It seems obvious from both the header and the tone of the article that they wish to minimize the connection.
Look at the header from the article:

It's my darn account and I should be able to do whatever with it.
Sheesh.
It's their darn bandwidth and they should be able to sell it with whatever restrictions they choose.
If you don't like it I encourage you to find a different provider.
Sheesh indeed.
