  1. RAID on Have Fujitsu Harddrives Been Failing in Record Numbers? · · Score: 3, Informative

As the quality of drives is getting worse, more people will be turning to RAID to protect their desktop storage. It's no coincidence IDE RAID is becoming more common on motherboards, and the hard drive manufacturers aren't going to shed a tear about selling twice as many drives.

Your kitchen cutting board has 200 times more fecal matter than the average toilet seat. Thats why I've started preparing all my meals in the bathroom, using the toilet seat for a cutting board instead (hey, its 200 times cleaner, right?)

Well, this article has convinced me. I'm going to dip my telephone in the toilet once a week for a good cleaning. No more germs for me.

OK, I've got Karma to burn.

As a fun experiment I replaced "Apple" with "Microsoft" and "OS X" with ".Net". The result shows just how hypocritical slashdot visitors are when it comes to Microsoft vs how much they praise Apple/Linux/Whoever for the same thing...

This makes huge sense for Microsoft: their future is .Net and the company has been saying this for some time. I'm glad they are making the cut now, still relatively early in .Net's life cycle. This will help push developers onto the new platform; in turn this is good for end users because the applications they need to run are more likely to appear on .Net.

And again it shows that Microsoft are able to make gutsey decisions and lead the market rather than follow it. Whatever you think of the relative merits of .Net vs. traditional COM applications, this is the kind of bleeding-edge decision making that Microsoft needs if it is to differentiate itself from the other platforms.

  18. What I hate about this on Japanese Video Chain Cashes in on Mobile Internet · · Score: 3, Interesting

Corporations always think they can track what I buy and then use something like the "recommendation engine" they talk about in the article to tell me what else I would like. Sure that seems like a helpful service but it really is a very selfish service, because it does nothing to expose me to new and interesting stuff, it simply herds me along with what 9 out of 10 other people watched after they watched what I just watched. The whole purpose is to get the most of my money the fastest way possible.

OK, so you might say, "you dont have to use the recommendation service". But you see that is not the problem. The problem is that they will eventually produce a much less diverse range of films, music, etc and focus in only on what the majority wants to see. They are already doing that today, but it will get worse with systems like these. Soon your local Blockbuster will not bother stocking your favorite cult film, if they haven't already. My problem with this is that it really homogenizes the population into a bunch of boring drones who are told what to like and what to think.

One of two things might happen, either they look at the code and say "we dont see why MS cant split the browser out", or they look at the code, freak out and just take Microsoft's word for it because they dont want to admit they lack the intellectual capacity to understand source code.
