Obviously, because it doesn't start with a 'K'.

Seriously.. KDE has the worst case of NIH I've ever seen. The Gnome project has no problem adopting existing technology and projects. Galeon, the Gnome browser, uses Mozilla, they turned AbiWord into a Gnome app (it didn't start out as a Gnome app).. but KDE has to reinvent the wheel. "AbiWord? Nah, we're not going to make KDE bindings for it, no matter how modular it is! We're going to start from scratch".

Someone needs to smack the KDE team and tell them to get over the NIH syndrome.. it's OK to use other people's apps as a basis for a KDE port.. that's what GPL is all about.

And stop naming every project KProjectname. Gnome doesn't do this anymore. It's Xchat, Evolution, Nautilus, AbiWord.. not GChat, Gevolution, Gnautilus, Gabiword.

That's not true at all, in fact it's FUD spread by the KDE devs. The "About KDE" box has been removed.. the About box hasn't. The About box lists the Authors and the License, the About KDE just pointed to a bunch of "hooray for KDE" crap, which was *exactly* the same in each app.

The authors names and license are still in RedHat (null).

As far as the "forking" is concerned, I hardly think that adding a theme, and removing About KDE (the only changes there are, mind you) qualifies as a "fork".

I'm not going to flame you, but I am going to tell you that yes, you just described Jabber exactly. I send an IM to my friend bob@bobchat.com, and my IM server, talks to the server located at bobchat.com and passes the IM, which in turn passes it to Bob, if he's online, if he's not online, then it just holds onto the IM for him until he is.

The protocol is completely open, it's 100% XML.

Another nice Jabber feature is that people can't get "presence" info from you (they have no idea if you're signed on, away, or what-not) unless you allow them. So the added privacy is nice too.

So why don't you head on over to jabber.org and set yourself up a server. Jabber even supports Whiteboards now.

Java is a language without a purpose these days. No one wants to use it client side, and server side just doesn't make sense when compared to the initial purpose of the language (being able to run the same binary anywhere makes no sense when it's only going to be running on your webserver).
