    Keep in mind that the Windows JRE uses *cough*DirectDraw*cough* to render Swing widgets, which tends to make resizing Java Swing app windows a little faster on Win32, where applicable due to bad graphics card drivers etc.

    I find because of this, that intensive draw operations are faster on Windows. Of course, there is still issues with the JVM optimizatione etc.

    I happily used ReiserFS on a Dual PII 400 w/ kernel 2.6.0-test8 and couldn't see the speed difference between it and a Duron 900MHz rig.

    In Australia here we have a plastic window on all of our notes, along with paper-which-you-can't-find-in-the-shop, a serial number, different pictures on each sides etc..

    Some banks here are also introducing anti-counterfeit measures into chequebooks too. I know one has 'themoink' on their cheques which fades in heat temporarily.

    How old?

    I happily had XP running on my Dual PII 350@400 (only one PII 350 in some cases).

    And that was with FULL visual effects etc.

    MIPS was chosen for the Qube 2 and RaQ 2 because a lot of exploits on Linux/2.0.34 were existed at the time, while ones for MIPS were rare.

    Cobalt didn't want to be compared to normal PC's either.

    I personally refuse to use ISP-side spam blocking filters because:

    1) False positives.
    2) Blocking Spam does nothing to stop it coming to your mail server. You should report the spam that comes into your inbox and get those barstards caught.

    I personally use SpamCop. The FTC has a spam collection address too:

    Cobalt Qube 2xxx + RaQ 2: Quantum Devices MIPS CPU (chosen because it had 2W of heat dissapation, while intel had 15)
    Cobalt Qube 3 + RaQ 4: AMD K6-3?
    Cobalt RaQ 550: Intel Pentium III 1.0GHz/1.2GHz.

    I've been working with the guys over at open.cobaltqube.org to get the damn thing working on Debian.

    My biggest problem to date is that the RaQ550 isn't gcc-3.2/3.2 aware. It also ain't updated for newer PHP versions, while the Qube3 release is.

    So far we've got the Cobalt Configuration Engine (cce backend) and minor parts of the web interface working.

    You do not need to be on the same jabber server to use a MSN gateway.

    i.e I'm on jabber.org and I can use the gateway on amessage.de

    Also that means that your friends don't need to be on the same server.

    (I've successfully been able to message between an account on jabber.org and jabber.com)

    If you must use MSN and don't need file transfers, I recommend you register a Jabber account at any Jabber server, and use a MSN gateway, and try to convince your friends to move to Jabber.

    I've done it already, and my MSN account is redundant!

    Anyway, I like telnetting into my favorite BBS and playing all those text mode games.. (and robbing the minutes bank)

    Too sad that Linux telnet + KDE Konsole can't handle ASCII color shading effects

    With graphics hardware getting better and better, why don't they just feed it through a Pro (Quadro probably, maybe FireGL, depends on what shaders you use.) video card with Aniso and Antistropic filtering turned up to the max?

    I've seen a few cases where I could of easily been fooled that a frame rendered by a video card was rendered by RenderMan or something. The last few seconds of the Advanced Pixel Shader Test in 3dmark2001se come to mind.

    Err... in Australia, 'College' is used very loosely. Commonly referred to as 'a school, especially a private school, or (in some cases) a seinor secondary school' in my case. (Apologies to the Oxford Australian Dictionary).

    Mandrake is ripping you off by not supplying you with a .config file used in the configuration of the kernel you are running. Hunt a kernel-source package for you kernel, and copy the .config file from the top of the kernel tree into /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/build/

    Let me correct myself even more.

    Of course every project has a "Core Team".

    I'm more referring to Keith Packard and the poor FreeBSD developer who got kicked out earlier in 2003. (it's already 2004 here :) ) Where's the Free Speech in these projects? People being kicked out because they choose to voice their option makes me puke.

    Face it.

    "Core Team" Development models are out-dated and sound more M$'ish than Open Source'ish.

    While several projects continue to use the "Core Team" model, like FreeBSD, in my opinion, the politics involved ain't worth it.

    For XFree86, it's time for change. Hopefully, in years to come, we will see a more efficient graphics subsystem for Unix (MacOS X may be an example) weather it be by a XFree86, XF86 Fork, or some other system (NOT framebuffer because fb doesn't work well with some hardware)

    The XGI Volari Duo can address 512MB too.

    AFAIK The open source nv driver didn't support the >= GeForce4 series, and I don't know if it does. If you want to ditch the binary there, you have to go vesa and 16-bit color, which is still resonable for word processing etc

    I haven't had a lot of time compared to the start of the year to work on it, but Milestone 3 has just come out of the door.

    Funny how I'm getting people who work on Server side stuff wanting to work on Jazilla... I'm only starting to work on Servlets :)

    Most overhead comes (IMO) from various (often unnecessary complicated, for what they do) frameworks, and from people who have no experience in considering performance impacts on designs or implementations.

    I have to agree. I hate using generic packages to do tasks in Jazilla, which makes the process more complicated and wastes code on inefficient conversion routines. Whenever possible, I try to code stuff in the simplest form I can, and without anything Jazilla doesn't need.
