not out of the question, but NVIDIA is probably going to make damn sure that ATI doesn't get details about the Xbox graphics implmentation.
Splinter Cell is one game that uses NVIDIA proprietary stuff. If you don't use an NVIDIA >= GeForce3 (excluding the 4 MX series), you'll notice that the shadows in the PC version will run differently to the Xbox one, even with a Radeon 97/800 something.
Atomic MPC ran an article on how Splinter Cell was ported across four platforms. Very interesting read. The PlayStation 2 ended up being the worst of the lot.
How fast do you think a 20mhz processor could run a Java app? Very Slowly. Keep in mind there are native Java Bytecode CPU's out there, but who uses them? My guess is nobody:(.
I don't think they would bother using anything to do with TCP. Anything you do send you will have to wait 9 minutes for. Just imagine the ping times:
Pinging mars-rover with 32 bytes of data: request timed out request timed out request timed out 64 bytes from mars-rover: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=32400ms:(
If it has anything to do with current internet protocols, it would be UDP.
probably the standard wireless mouse. USB in it's own right eats up CPU power, which in turn, eats fps. WUSB probably won't be different. The usage for USB mice wouldn't be much, but any extreme gamer might take it as too much =(
Join the WebBlocker club. It wrecked hell on my school last year blocking text/xhtml, application/x-debian-package (and keeping application/x-msdownload:( )
Proxy censorship scripts are retarded. I've already found a security hole in the one that my school uses:(
However, it suprises me that so many non-tech-saavy-students at school use Tux as their Windows wallpaper without realizing that it's the Linux mascot, not to mention what linux is.
(I'm one of only three people running Linux at my school, and I'll think I'll have to hand out Linux Live-CD's preconfig'ed for the school network soon:( )
I should note that some WMP files are encoded in wierd formats that require you to copy over DLL's from your Windows install to the mplayer. I've successfully used it to watch Bloomberg Asia-Pacific without any DLL copying, but I had to copy over a DLL trying to view the NVIDIA GeForceFX demos.
I tried 2.6.0-test8 when I had my Dual PII box a few months ago. Performance difference for KDE between it and my 800@920MHz spitfire Duron was pretty much unnoticeable. Recommended for older boxes.
.... I think this is plain disgusting. If this service turned up in Australia, I wouldn't turn in my work to them. In fact, I'd happily publish work (actual work written by myself, not stuff on worksheets etc.) on my own website and not to that utter waste of money database. One of my friends already has.
Being a student, I am absolutely bothered by this. In fact, I have chosen to not take ANY classes at my M$ Biased school at all. It's just a waste of time.
In November, I finally installed Debian on my (school supplied but owned by me) laptop and proceeded to use it for most of my school work. (I was initally delayed from doing this due to lack of NTLM-proxy support in Mozilla for non-win32).
I am yet to run in to a incident where I have been told to use <insert proprietary application here> instead of <insert OSS equiv here> , even though my Maths teacher (a clear M$ head) got a little irritated with my use of KGhostView instead of Acrobat.
But what still annoys me is this specific quote from the school "about" page:
The ready availiability of computers enables teachers and students to maximise usage of information technology. Students employ their laptops as more than mere word processors. Each unit exploits and develops student information technology skills through a range of programmes including WORD, EXCEL, PUBLISHER, PHOTOSHOP[1], POWERPOINT.....
[1] - They don't even use Photoshop. They use Jasc's Print/PaintShop/whatever it's called.
I sucks crud that they dumped NetWare, since I especially liked it's "Novell Delivered Applications" app, which allows me to purge a program to save disk space, and simply pull it back over the network later should I need it.
I can't still believe they wasted my parents precious $ on ~1,400 M$ client licenses. Even worse since they can't produce a real Acceptable Use Policy, maintain network security and have a crud anti-freespeech conduct policy. Not to mention the fact their obsecure firewall idiotically blocks the xhtml mime type on w3c.org and still lets students search for their dose of pr0n on Google image search...
I bought a Celeron 400 + mobo + 64MB ram + ATI Rage Pro II + Realtek RTL8029 network card and 2GB HDD for my router box on Sunday for $75 AUD and it just works great.
I have squid on there doing transparent caching, webmin + usermin to administer it + samba to do the fileserving (I found NFS too unstable on my linux boxes/boxen that I find using smbfs against it works great) and thttpd to do squids webalizer statistics.
I can't imagine what good market there is for Linux on older hardware.
I quote Wikipedia (http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goatse):
Geographic location The site uses the.cx country code top-level domain of Christmas Island, where the operators will not disclose the registrant's personal information. The actual server of Goatse.cx is not located on Christmas Island, but in the United States and is owned by Hick.org, which is a website about computer programming. The Hick.org domain was registered by Matt Miller in Overland Park, Kansas. Both Goatse.cx and Hick.org originate from the same IP address; the server is located in the Kansas City, Missouri metro-region. Goat.cx, a mirror of Goatse.cx, is located in the Houston, Texas metro-region.
.
So Mr. AC, what do you have to say for yourself now?
(post delivered without karma bonus for obvious reasons)
Your taking domains for your own purposes, instead of letting the rightful users of the domain (the people that live on the island) have full rights to it. Thats just utter DNS misusage and disgraceful.
Some applies for *cough*goatse.cx*cough*.cx belonds to Christmas Island, which you would all know is an Australian. Time they put auDA in charge of.cx and not let the shock sites back in without an Australian Tax File number (AFAIK an Australian Taxation number is a requirement for using anything under.au)
Not to mention the fact that Windows has some stupid approach to NTFS encryption. All you have to do to crack a NTFS encrypted file is just to access it with the Linux-NTFS driver.

GeForce 4 4400
Not even. It's equivalent to a GeForce3.
How fast do you think a 20mhz processor could run a Java app?

If they really hate Linux, why don't they run UnixWare on their domain?

Not to mention any lag factors with wireless.

What? Geeks who read Slashdot actually have romance in their life?
Thats it! I'm suing OSDN for damages relating to the loss of my social life! I'll see you in court, Rob!
Ever tried going to hotmail-ppe.com before M$ released it's new hotmail design. read more.
I guarantee something should turn up at msn-ppe.com.
This is off topic, but can anyone confirm that /. Seriously fuckup earlier? I got 503 rejections, followed with what appears to be cached content.
I agree.

of course... thats the bad part. I personally have no problems with RealONE alpha on Linux, but AFAIK Isn't their Helix player too?
Just walk over to mplayerhq.hu and download:

I can just imagine it.

Take a Rational-IBM ad.
Replace 'middle' in 'MiddleWare is everywhere' with 'UnixWhere'
Replace 'Rational' in '|Rational| Software' with 'SCO'
Replace whatever-background-picture with a McDonalds POS pic.
Scary

Also, for a more current comparison:
distributed.net rc5-72 Duron 1.4@ 1.9 (2400+) w/256kb l2 cache mod:
Windows: 5,500-6,000/sec
Linux 2.4.20-debian: 3,400-3,700/sec
Linux-2.6.1-rc1: 5,500-6,000/sec.
The upgrade to Linux-2.6 is worth it.

Did Linus get hold of our precious golden liquid resource? I can't imagine what would happen if he did.....
AFAIK Wasn't Columbia the only space shuttle that could dock with Hubble, sacrificing it's ability to dock with the ISS?
Thats what the the local 11pm Sunday night science show tells me.

M$ really needs to get their act up.
AFAIK aarnet mirror isn't accessible outside Australia and maybe New Zealand.
