Wait, am I missing something? Aren't OSs already a subset language of full "programming languages" (that is, lambda calculus)? And all these languages, imo, are just using what has been available in lisp for now near 40 years. Programming languages haven't _improved_ worth a jack since then, though maybe they have become more _efficient_ (corporate whores!). lol
However, the beauty of the scientific method is that it is self-policing. Anyone can read the journals; anyone can write the editors of said journals and report anything that's not above board.
Except poor people...
Most of labor done under the title of "science" is specialist nonsense designed to earn the person another paycheck, either at an "academic" (which you might also call a "corporate academic" depending on the funding source of the university) or a "corporate" job. Either way there is little time to spend researching the wider impact of scientific knowledge, resulting in the subject of this article. So scientists don't get MILLIONS, but hell, most people don't get more than $360 bucks a year! I do not think any self-respecting scientist would disagree with the statement that "concerns of money have directly influenced the progress and respectablity of science." Just look at the billions of dollars being spent to "stop cancer" when anyone with any general knowledge of the issue knows that this is an impossible act in the first place (but you wouldn't get that from their papers, their advertising, etc, which is the whole point).
Good point.
One way in the Iran-Israel-Contra scandle that they smuggled tons of cocaine and weapons to finance arms for Iran was by unloading the cargo containers at "mafia-controlled" corners of port. The police who came around were bought off and the dock inspectors (i.e. government bureaucrats) never even visited that side of town. Oh, and basically, among other people, the mafia enjoys "employing" Green Berets, CIA agents, etc. for the handling of these things. This sort of thing is a direct outgrowth of a state that has put way to much money into military matters and way to little into social amenities and government oversight.
The "war on terrorism" is about as acurate a phrase as the "war on drugs", which, as most middle-age americans can attest, has done jack to stop the flow of drugs into the U.S., but has managed to put alot of non-violent law breakers into maximum security prisons.
I think you're all missing the point! Which is that this article contained jack precise information in it and noone reading it could possibly build an informed opinion of the topic off this brief article, making this conversation completely irrelevant (due its undecidability). This article is taking up "valuable/. space" and should have never been posted. LoL!
You're all missing the point.
All of mathematics can be expressed with Lambda-Calculus, so DNA is just one big expression in that. Think Lisp and s-expressions, and binary trees. DNA can't be more than that because the universe isn't more than that. The DNA and protiens all run off the same thing, i.e. their 'selection' is baseed off the 'mathematical patterns of the universe', with the interpretation of these patterns coming from the Lisp. It can't be more than that because humans can't reason about more than that, period end of sentence. If you find yourself using more complicated models than L.C. to express evolution and DNA, then you've already gone too far, and you should be looking for the simpler model (L.C.).
Oh cmon. 3/4 of the world is poor and you downgrade me because information is power? Shit. I might as well forsake the computer and program with rocks and sticks (it can be done, you euber hackers!). Fuck. Pussies. You can't code worth a damn, or you'd elsee you'd have already freed the world.
So, stuff the money. I mean, its all about the lambda-expressions, right? You only just urged your readers to pay for software, though you call it a donation. Computation is computation, and anything less than that is the talk of pussy hackers. I mean fuck. Are there any real programmers left?
Because free porn is everywhere on the WWW already. The only deal is that its a bitch to find because you have crawl through a bunch of web pages with false links, popup windows, etc. If they allow easy access to a bunch of their porn, they'll get the real signups that webmasters are getting now. Its a bad idea though, I think. Now with Mozilla out, all the programs like Napster, Hotline, etc will just move to the web and be guaranteed a wider audience than a Napster clone.
My computer would be alot more trustworthy if it didn't crash every hour and stall as frequently from massive memory leaks. I swear every time I visit the family and end up using WindowsME, I want to put my fist through the thing.
WARNING::::::: It turns out theres a new e-mail virus going about named "Capitalists.bl0w". The key words that can trigger this attack include "U.S. government", "Cheney", "Bush", "Enron", and "9-11 conspiracy". Until this virus can be reverse engineered and a remedy found, all ISPs will hence be filtering these words from e-mail orriginating from their servers. While the wee tiny handfull of companies that control the nations bandwidth acted of their own volition, they would have likely faced numerous suits in court in the case that the virus put undue strain on the nation's communications infastructure in the event of another terrorist attack.
Its not about it being free you nimwit. Every time you open yourself up to being dependent on advertising money, the more direct control those companies have over how the program is run/displayed/etc. Soon they'll all have ads. Then only the profitable companies will have 10 ads. Then 30 ads. Then the software will only be pushed by companies who have a vested interest in selling ad space, and not the actual product. It happened to the news media, it can happen to OSS. We have our products, and they work, I don't see why we need to whore ourselves out and weaken our political power in the process.
This little battle isn't about open source. Its about how the political power is going to be divided up between those who have MONEY and those who have PROGRAMMING SKILLS. If we let the plutocrats buy our programming skills off us, then we have nothing left, actual source code or not be damned. Its basic game theory.
First its only one ad, then in a few months maybe another if you open up Evolution, or one for Gimp. Man, I only have one thing to say: fuck it. Why the hell do we need to sell ourselves out now, when we're (OSS) kicking so much ass? Christ.
You're all ignoring something: systems with exponential growth always stop growing, and rather quickly. I figure we've been growing at such rate for roughly 20,000-10,000 years. Now, if you know your math, that means if we keep at it we'll be up and out across the entire universe in like another 1000. That ain't that long, folks. This nice little trip the human species has been on for a tiny bit is going to end real soon. By friggin definition, you science nerds, it has to. And once we stop growing, what do you think will happen? You think scientific progress can keep at this crazy rate of expansion when the population stops expanding and everyone has to spend 3/4 of their day just trying to find enough space to sleep for the night? Who will build the next biggest partical collider? Africa will be too busy trying to stay alive to mine your metals for your newest computer chip. Moore's stupid little 18 month law only occurs in the rich countries, and when we stop expanding, even that will slow down. Face it, we're stinking chimps, with the only difference is that we have exponential growth and they (our ancestors/brothers/etc) don't.
Except once you get more than 40-50 peons harvesting simultaneously, the gold mines disapear real fast, and you either have to go conquer your neighbor before you use up your stores or start the game over.
Actually sex is a minor part of evolution. As I understand it now, evolution is just another word for basic thermodynamic equilibriums. Meaning, given background thermal fluctuations, its impossible to exactly perserve a strand of information across time, and this would give rise in any situation to "evolution", i.e. mutations, resulting in selection under finite resoures. The sex thing comes in due to the constant competition between hosts and viruses...bacteria have "sex" by sometimes exchanging random bits (well, not pseudo random) of DNA, and it does give rise to more variety, but this does not in turn mean that evolution depends on sex. Nor does it mean that evolution is sped up by sex, as if everyone has to deal with viruses, and everyone has to have sex, then things are just like they were if everyone didn't have viruses and didn't have sex. All it does is raise the bar, i.e. "selection".
Agreed. It all comes down to the fact that newspapers/other media costs alot more to produce now than they charge, leaving the companies completely dependent on advertising. And we can guess where that might lead. Of course if they didn't spend all their bucks on speculative investments, color photos, and whiz bang infographics, they might actually have some money left over for reporting, and not be in this stitch. Call it survival of the fittest, or the stench of monopolies (what is it, something like 5 companies control essentially all the news and media outlets in the U.S....thats worse than the 7 oil companies [though i guess they overlap]), or even the fucking fascists, any way you cut it the comman man gets screwed. And the common stupid man gets it doubly.
Actually, from what I can tell, most people in developed countries (who I assume is everyone here with their computers and internet) kill people across the world all the time from the safety of their TV sets. If you pay your taxes, and pay someone to fight in your stead, then you're already killing people. How'd you think your computer parts keep getting cheaper and cheaper every year? (you'll notice Moore's 18 month law doesn't apply to Africa) And if you were one of the US citizens who paid their taxes over the phone or computer this year, then it all really was a click away, so don't get so high and mighty. This may be the information age, but the world's still run with guns and missiles.
I don't understand why this means anything. A couple million american kids go to see a movie (getting shafted at $10/ticket, no doubt!) and we've got the second coming, or at least, the proletariat revolution? Now, if they were building lightsabers and burning down theatres, then I'd imagine you'd might have a point. But this just sounds like sociopolitical bullshit (and I should know, I study politics and read stuff like this every day).

Shit man we're talking about Pakistan here, not the U.S....

Lay off, Slash-dot-nazi!
You can always publish online porn!
Last I checked the industry was worth 9 billion USD, plenty of upward mobility, you might say.

As far as I can tell OSS is keeping Micro$oft and the U.S. government from teaming up and turning your computer into a TV. Doesn't that count?

Warcraft, microcosm of the universe.

I'd start off reading some of the bridging books that introduce undergraduates to abstract math, proof structure, etc. I'm actually reading "Bridge to Abstract Mathematics", by Ronald Morash, ISBN 394-35429-X, "How to Read and Do Proofs" and "The Keys to Advanced Mathematics: Recurrent Themes in Abstract Reasoning" and I highly recommend all of them. They won't cover any specific subjects, but I've been struggling with undergraduate mathematics myself lately and have found these books invaluable.

(in particular, I had CSS2 positioning styles in mind)
Anyone know if 7.0 will include full support for CSS2 and XML?
