I think, the more dangerous look automatically comes with age, simply once you hit the 30s, you should have developed enough natural muscles (no matter if you workout or not) and one morning shave less and nobody will try to touch you. But looking more on the dangerous side can really help, no matter which country, having a bald skull is excellent in this regard, but also to look more on the bum side of life if you are on a tour helps to avoid muggers.

The problem of the total warfare was, that it basically brought down greek culture to its knees several times and eradicated it almost, also several times.

The pan hellenic war which started as the two superpowers athens and sparta went after each other basically brought decades of huge decline over the greek peninsula, the states of the old cold never recover fully and athens basically was led into semi oblivion.

Greek got another golden age of a few years during Alexanders time, his father was able for the first time in history to unit the hellenic peninsula and they brought the warfare into the middle east and asia. There is no need to mention that after alexanders deadh, everything fell apart and the greek culture declined due to constant warfares again before being safed from total desdruction of itself by the romans.

The real greek culture which was able to survive basically was the greek eastern roman empire, which was brought down the warfare of the surrounding states, but the eastern roman empire was one of the keys that civilization could survive by being a constant source of copies of the old greek and romand philosophers.

Greece is a typical example on how constant warfare can bring a civilization to its knees and almost to its collapse.

All I can say is, inform yourself, your sister should do the same start a therapy and depending on the severity of her schizophrenia consult a psychiatrist to discuss medication. But be warned most of the schizo medication has sideeffects, depending on the meds. Most of them make tired and some of them make constantly hungry, so a constant workout schedule is required. But one thing your sister should not do, is to give in and do nothing, you can live with it, you can get out, but if you do nothing, then you run into a horrible nightmare. I still havent figured how you can plug a software midi synth on top of this mess so that it works seamlessly for all the other apps. This thing is hilarious. OSS did defenitely many things wrong, but one thing it did right, you just started the driver and you had sound or not! What we would need probably would be something like that ( I posted this on osnews also) start soundcard driver start optional midi driver for the software synth, and be done... The problem is not that the device is a hybrid, most people hate to carry around 2-3 devices because the manufacturers dont want to take the risk of trying new markets. The problem was the lousy execution on nokias part. The NGage failed for several reasons one is the bad design, the other one that Nokia is not known as a console producer. But dont dismiss the idea, the future lies in combined PDA-Gamemachine-Cellphone Combinations, there is no other way.

That depends on the situation, over here the SWT is significantly slower than any Swing app. But that speed difference can be attributed to the slowlyness of GTK2 compared the the Blackdown 1.4.2 Swing implementation. The swt itself performs more or less as fast as the underlying gui toolkit does since it only is a meta layer over existing toolkits. On windows Swing and SWT performe slightly the same, with the SWT being better integrated but Swing being more flexible with its pluggable look and feel system. And on the mac I think it makes no difference, since Swing on the Mac is fast and tightly integrated into Aqua.

  25. Java is getting better at GUIs on Can You Spare A Few Trillion Cycles? · · Score: 1

You said two years ago, that was before 1.4.
Java, well Swing is getting better.
There were two factors you encountered back then.
Swing back then was less optimized than it is today, and back then Swing didnt revert to the underlying hardware acceleration but the the Windows native toolkits already did.

The situation currently is more or less, that the speed difference in Swing compared to native toolkits is neglectable and in some cases even better.
The reason for this is, that Swing now reverts to hardware acceleration for its 2d drawing functions and the library is better optimized.

    The current situation is following:
Windows JDK 1.4: Speed difference neglegtable and acceptable
Windows JDK 1.5: Speed difference barely visible at all

Linux: JDK 1.4 Sun: Swing is still much slower than every other toolkit but has acceptable speed
Linux Sun JDK 1.5: Swing is faster but still slower than GTK2 (havent tried the OpenGL option yet)
Linux Blackdown 1.4.2RC1: Swing is faster than GTK2 and a tad slower than Qt
Mac: no noticable speed difference since 1.4, in fact with a little bit of tweaking you dont notice any difference to nativ apps at all due to the excellent L&F Apple provides.

So the situation is not that bad as everbody shouts. The funny thing is most people who scream Java is slow, Java guis are slow neither have seen the SWT in action nor have probably seen a post JDK 1.3 JDK, their knowledge basically is outdated by more than two years.

Over here we slowly are moving away from web based guis, due to the imminent fork of Microsoft with HTML which currently is in the beginning stages and will be completed with Longhorn.
Swing has become fast enough and is very flexible.
