A classic computer mouse (when they weren't optical, but actually used a ball) has not one but 2 optical spinners in it. That shouldn't be too hard to work out.

  13. Do you know how many CRT monitors have dead pixels? The answer is none, because consumers would not stand for that. Plus, there were about 40+ previous years of manufacturing improvements that helped eliminate manufacturing errors of the phosphors in CRTs. So you can either complain (which is what the switch owners are doing), or wait until manufacturing technology matures.

  14. No need to go to the analog hole to record a stream. You could use wireshark to record all the incoming packets. Pure digital. Keep your fingers out of my analog hole!

You can replace the monitor in most cabinets with a 21" LCD for about $100. If the main board dies, you can emulate the game on mame using a raspberry pi. This means that you can remove the HUGE and very inefficient power supply, and replace it with a small 5v switcher. The game will run, it will last longer, it will consume less power, and it will weigh less. Wins all around!

You seem to think that you will be singled out, and advertised to directly. I don't think that's the case. He often writes technical documentation for his job, and implements various design rules to make it easier to find the part you want in his documents. He doesn't have to do it, but it certainly helps him when he needs to refer to the documentation himself in the future.
