Basically global warming has just become a boogeyman for socialists to use to push their agenda, which is of far more concern to them than the actual environment.
Seriously, guys... How and why on earth would you defend such dishonest and dishonorable practices? You pay $x a month for y bits up and z bits down. Where does the "I dont wanna pay" thing come from? Where do you see a free ride? It isn't there, yet you're so used to parroting the "businesses can do no wrong" party line that you can't help but go to bat for these creeps.
And the kicker is that it's NOT like this in some other countries, so your lame-ass "that's the way the rest of the world works" bullshit falls totally flat. Defending naked greed isn't going to improve our nation, and it won't make you happy or fulfilled in any meaningful way, so fucking cut it out. Please.
Are you some sort of industry shill? Where the fuck is your point of view coming from? Do you like being lied to? Why the hell are you an apologist for false advertising?
There's an incredibly simple solution to this, and it seems to me that smaller shops (the type where the sysadmins call the sysadmin shots) are heading in this direction:
Email is never blocked, but simply cleaned and labeled.
- If it contains some sort of known malware, that file is quarantined before sending on the email.
- If it's "obviously" spam, then *******SPAM******* is prepended to the subject.
- If an html link appears to be a phishing attempt (tagged url doesn't match href url or similar) then it's put in plaintext with a warning
It's easy and simple. Yes, you need to slightly educate your users, but if you intelligently modify the subject or body it really shouldn't be a problem.
There are all sorts of clever tricks you could use to obfuscate your data, but if you don't want to live in a society where you have to use them now is the time to put a stop to this sort of bullshit. Courage, brother.
Pacifism doesn't even rule out violence (for a given value). Here's a great example:
During WW2 a community of Mennonites was occasionally hassled by their neighbors for not participating in the war. One of the men from their community was confronted by several townspeople and asked why he wasn't fighting. His reply was that "violence never solved anything." This angered one man, who rushed to attack. This Mennonite happened to be a wrestler, and tossed his attacker across the room. He picked the guy up, brushed him off and asked if he had changed his mind. The guy replied "of course not".
Just because a person likes computers and has some aptitude for programming does not mean that they will enjoy a career in IT.
In fact I'd say that a career in IT is a great way to kill your fondness for programming. Keep in mind that this is an industry where they'd rather import workers from half a world away than pay you a fair wage. They will work you for 10-12 hours a day and pay you for 8. They will take advantage of any sort of work ethic you might have. You've been warned.
I thought it was the fact that N. Korea is primarily made up of starving dirt-farmers, while S. Korea is a wealthy and populous nation backed by the most powerful government on the planet.
Could be the mines tho. Or maybe this bananna I've got stuck in my ear.
The small amount of money you save not running wires from the telephone pole to houses/building does not offset the cost of all the wireless 'hotspots' needed for wide area coverage.
The point is, does OpenOffice or whatever apps are currently available that use the OpenDoc format has the same level of help for people with disabilities as Office? Obviously it's (mostly) the app not the format that addresses this, but it's a valid bitch: Does OpenOffice or any of the other semi-mature non-Microsoft applications have support for disabilities at or better than MS Office? Most people who are not completely blinded by ideology will say honestly, "not yet".
MS won't ever support a standard that directs interest away from themselves unless someone holds their feet to the fire. It's not suprising at all, or even particularly "evil". Like any dumb beast, they just need a kick in the nuts every now and then to point them in the right direction.
Oh, if you're a person w/ disabilities... why the hell are you not using a Mac? Don't make us suffer because of your masochistic tendencies, ok?
Well, one is a mildly psychoactive drug that's fairly harmless in moderate quantities. The other is used in the manufacture of an extremely physically and socially destructive substance. Sounds like the cops and politicians in your area are on the ball... have you seen what meth does to people?
I did, and you're sort of wrong. Here's the relevant bit from your link:
This design, which included a high level of redundancy, would make the network more robust in the case of a nuclear attack. This is probably where the myth that the Internet was created as a communications network for the event of a nuclear war comes from. As a distributed network the ARPANET definitely was robust, and possibly could have withstood a nuclear attack, but the chief goal of its creators was to facilitate normal communications between researchers.
So it wasn't designed to survive a nuclear attack, but it might be able to. Sort of like Donald Trump's hairpiece. (he's on billboards all over town right now... we're so sick of his mug)

What agenda is that?
Looking back in retrospect
...
WoW, really?
A "conservative" is someone who is interested in maintaining the status quo.
A "liberal" is someone who would like to change the status quo.
"progressive" is just another term for "liberal".
"neo-conservative" is just another term for "totalitarian".
You can be a Democrat or a Republican and still fall within any or all of the above categories depending on the subject at hand.
Those who do not remember Breakfast Club are doomed to repeat it...
It's social. Demented and sad, but social.

or, "Deregulation didn't work the last 20 times we tried it, but it damn well ought to, so let's try it again."
(apologies to John Brunner)
Carl Sagan had a line about how people who think that evolution and creationism are incompatible don't really understand either.
William Gibson had a line about people who don't know shit about anything, and hate the people who do.
I've got a line in the water, because I'd rather fish than listen to dipshit fundies.

This is Homeland Security. We will be paying a visit to you shortly.

What do you call a society that invents self-healing minefields before self-healing limbs?
Insane.

That sounds like utter bullshit. Have any proof?

No one died on Galloping Gertie.
Just one poor dog that somebody left in their car as they fled.
Yep. Every annoying law can be traced back to some jerk who had to ruin it for the rest of us. Nice going, jerks.
If you're not part of the solution you're part of the precipitate?

No odder than tying your choice in clothing to your identity. We're pretty strange.
And it works.
