So, if you want to see an open source implementation of voting software, something that you can argue is perfect and be able to show the world such, you need to make it. Diebold and their competitors won't.
Nor should we sit around and DEMAND that Diebold be required to share their work with the world. I agree with the parent, if you want it, write it.
As a contractor and an consultant, I'm documenting all lost sales and damages. Should SCO lose, and it be shown in court that this was truly BS/FUD, I'll have legal recourse.
The SCO folks are making such GENERAL statements against Linux, Linux Users, and Linux consultants, that it should NOT be hard to prove their negligence/libel/slander in court.
But by the end of the SCO/IBM lawsuit, the SCO bigwhigs will have unloaded all their stock anyway, and there won't be much to collect on.
I buy game guides for most of the console games I purchase. Not so much for myself, but for my daughter. Guides for Gran Turismo 3, and the FIFA games have helped her get up to speed in a game quickly. Hard to read a FAQ on the PC from across the house she says. Since I wait for them to go on sale, the cost is negligible for me.
I was doing contract work for a cell provider in atlanta about 6 years ago. We had to have a serious background check done in order to even view the database with tower information in it. The cell companies claim that the hush hush is for security and anti-terrorism reasons. Personally I thought it was so we couldnt share just how lousy their coverage really was.
Nextel is threatening to change our rates in mid-contract. A very rude Mr Harris was put on the phone a few days ago when we called up about a billing problem (cell minutes magically disappeared from the plan???) All he kept saying was "we are losing money on your account"
My answer was tough, your agent signed us up and for 6 months, you honored the contract. You make any changes to the accounts between now and December, a breech of contract suit will ensue.
Ends up, customer service passed us to him. He was in "Account deactivation". They are doing anything they can to get us to leave.
They have no idea how much money they will be losing. Unlimited nights and weekends are phone when you have one half of your phones call the other half all weekend, every weekend, for the rest of the year.
Screw you Nextel, I'm going to Verizon at the end of the contract.
Thanks to terrorism, my 1 million dollar liability policy went from $170 a year to $700 a year. Yeah, my risk of messing up someones computers increased because a couple of airplanes crashed.
The best part is, I'm NOT liable for delays caused by 3rd parties. Its in the contracts. I'm not liable for damages caused by 3rd parties.
Oh, yeah, my auto insurance went up. I got older, didnt have an accident, but my premium went up. Why? Because allstate wants to recoup losses from other divisions and underwritings.
Oh yeah, and the uninsured motorist premium went up. Hell yeah! Now I'm paying MORE to cover those that ARENT paying. Uninsured and you hit me, welcome to indentured servitude I say. You, your children, your momma. I need a maid and a gardner for free.
And now a few eggheads are worried about a rock killing us all. Jeez. They should be more worried about stepping off the curb and getting hit by a bus. Where is MY "dont get hit by a bus insurance"??? That $1 million a year could feed a lot of hungry americans. Wait, that $1 million a year could be used for someone elses pork barrel project.
"Why should copyright holders, who as owners of intellectual property, have fewer rights than somebody who owns televisions or clothing and attempts to sell them? Clearly everyone would agree that the television and clothing retailers should be able to investigate and prosecute shoplifters."
Why should buyers of music/software have fewer rights than buyers of TVs or clothing? If I buy a TV and dont want it, I can RESELL it. If I buy clothers, I can RESELL them.
But, if I "buy" a CD, the RIAA will give me a hella time if I try to sell it to the used cd shop, and heaven forbid we try to resell our old software with the BSA running around.
My son is 4 and was born with physical DISABILITY and was HANDICAPPED. There is NOTHING wrong with those terms. He did NOT have the same ABILITIES as other children his age and that presented challanges in his life.
Now, that being said. There are local business' in older buildings that do not have handicap access. Do I grab an attorney and head to the court house to "solve this assualt on my sons rights"? No. If it were the post office or other public place, then yes, the lack of accessibility would present a problem. My money (TAXES) paying for something he/I do not have access to is a problem.
But a private company? We are not born with the "right" to enter every PRIVATE business. The business owner makes a decision as to his clientel. Sorry, but even with the civil rights laws out there, a private company can still dictate whether it wants to sell to only men, or only women, or only whites, or only blacks. Because it is a PRIVATE decision.
My company sells software to schools. We do NOT sell to the US Federal Government, because then our website would have to meet the new guidelines within the next year. Now I ask you. Do I really want a blind/deaf person from a federal office deciding whether they want to buy my audio software? They cant SEE the product. They cant HEAR the product.
The Federal government needs to protect the nation, handle treaties and international commerce, and get the hell out of everything else.
And layoffs should not be a drop dead event. A WISE CFO knows that layoffs are coming. A WISE CEO has detailed layoff/senority policies in place. A WISE employee knows where he is in the pecking order of things.
When we have had to scale back our shop, the poor guy at the bottom knew it was coming. We all did. But it wasn't a "walk in on friday, here is your check dont come back on monday" deal. It was a "we are going to have to let you go, we can keep you here for 2 weeks let us know what days you need off to do interviews..."
Current companies, under the guise of protection, whether protecting company assets, or executive asses, hide the bad news, no one really knows how things are going, or work in the organization.
All it does is create a hostile group that will not want to come back to work if things pick up, wont buy your product, will tell their friends not to buy your product.
To this day I will not buy Arrow shirts. Why? My wife's cousin walked in one day after 15 some years, thank you, don't bother coming back, we are shipping your job overseas. Zero warning. No transition process, nada.
Its an ethics issue. But then, we arent allowed to discuss right and wrong anymore, just what is legal or illegal. Wait, no, we can't do that any more.
We also received notice today from Nextel informing us that some folks in our local exchanges may be charged to call our nextel phones.
Nextel claims the decision was not theirs, but the paper states that Nextel used to absorb the call termination fees. Sure sounds like their "decision" to no longer absorb the fees.
They can't tell us who they are in a pissing contest with, but from the wording on the notice, and from the wording on the nextel customer service reps screen, I would guess it is Bellsouth.
As for PTT and "Push to Talk" I also would have thought those terms are "common usage" terms by now.
Sweet. Unionized. Then I can sit around with unemployed unionized coal miners and steel workers drinking beer and wondering how I'm going to make it for the next 20 years without retooling my skill-set.
Yeah, unions are the answer. NOT.
The answer is don't compromise. If the deal sucks, walk away. If you accept the terms of a crappy situation, then you set precedence that the employer can do it all over again.
Is the claimed SCO code part of one or more optional components of the Linux kernel, or are they in the kernel's core?
How many lines of code in the Linux kernel are a direct copyright violation? It's very extensive. It is many different sections of code ranging from five to 10 to 15 lines of code in multiple places that are of issue, up to large blocks of code that have been inappropriately copied into Linux in violation of our source-code licensing contract. That's in the kernel itself, so it is significant. It is not a line or two here or there. It was quite a surprise for us.
Same on my nearly 1 year old Insprion 2650 and the Inspiron 1100 that came this week.
Booted the Redhat cds and I'm off and running.
Never saw an agreement, never had to agree to one.
Just another bored geek who wanted to post an article to slashdot. Nothing NEW here to see.
Can we do this for cigarettes as well?
I'm tired of picking up the butts around the outside of the office.

Of course, with the distinguished shape of a dildo.
Thats why I moved away 10 years ago.
At 19, I didn't like the options of being an unemployed coal miner or an unemployeed steel worker.
With all the claims in this thread to support the EFF...what exactly has the EFF done for us all lately?
What was their last ground breaking, rights protecting success?
Be better off hoarding our money to pay our OWN laywers, who have a truly vested interested in protecting ME.
A man who represents himself has a fool for a client.
Its the NYT!
Who needs proof when the old grey lady can just waggle her tongue and someone posts it to slashdot?
It seems that the percentage of slashdot articles referencing the NYT is definately increasing.
I wish I had mod points today.
That was truly funny.
Shoot.

very good point.
I posted similar not seeing your post yet.

I use my Strategic Commander in my regular work as much as I use it for gaming.
The programable buttons are great for repetitive key sequences n such.

Because your FRS goes possibly a mile and a half, yet I can call a tech in Mississipi from Miami using a nextel radio now.
The key is no dead air time with radios like you get with cell phones.
Radio:
*chirp* jim
*chirp* yeah?
*chirp* the ip address is blah blah blah
*chirp* ok
Cell:
*ring* *ring* *ring*
hello this is jim.
hey jim, got that ip address for you
excellent
the ip address is blah blah blah
They are rolling out their nationwide radio plan right now.
