You are missing the point. Off all the connectors you mentioned (Ethernet, HDMI, Svideo, blah blah blah), most if not all are plug once and forget for most part or keep plugging 100 times in 5minutes till it works and forget it for most part.

USB devices on the other hand are numerous and most people (cannot cite a source since this is captain obvious territory) plug in and remove their USB devices frequently (many times a day?) - they not only use this for data transfer but also to charge their devices. Often the ports are vertical (Thinkpad laptops) and to the side (Dell monitors). If i had a better alternative for an idiot proof connector layout (not that I have given thought to it), I'd be patenting it right now.

Obviously the smart guys are paid to that job and imo, they aren't doing it that well. You would be bitching about a stereo jack or power charger connector if it wasn't just round and "insertable" as that's a connector you use a lot (way more frequently than a VGA). As for the CD, it doesn't take a lot of brains to put in a CD the right way. Stop arguing just for the sake of argument eh?

Half my cables don't have the little USB logo on them :( - I guess I should replace them. Also what about laptops where USB ports (vertical) are on either side and are mirrored. I guess if I paid attention, it would be less of a problem but I just want to insert.

If I had a penny for each time I inserted an USB cable incorrectly, reversed it and probably managed to insert it correctly, I'd be able to afford one of those high end Mac notebooks.

Looks like the saga will continue with USB3 as the connectors are designed the same. Why can't the connector be designed in such a way that just inserting *would just work* without having to worry about alignment. Too much to ask?

On the flip side, Tannenbaum would be happy: Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of 1TB external drives with USB3 ports hurtling down the highway. Or Ritchie - whoever said that.

I quit playing WoW earlier this year (early March) and I must say that life's been great since. I wasn't a raider (but was doing arenas hardcore) but I fell victim to what's called "Altitis". I found that taking characters to 70 was fun and fast and pretty soon I ended up with four level 70s and two level 60s (61 and 62) when I quit.

So when Blizzard brought out new daily quests or new festival events, I felt compelled (OC ftl) to do every quest on every alt - needless to say that stupidity (or OC again) burned me out. Now I am doing a lot more with my "free" time. I am hoping that the expansion won't make me renew my account or somehow magically I'd be busy playing Fable2, Alan Wake and Fallout3 that I won't notice WoW. I only need to hold myself together till SC2 or Diablo3 comes out at which point resistance will be futile :(

Should've stuck to playing Riverraid or Pitfall :O

I have quite a few friends who work at MS and most of them recommend running XP over vista when asked the obvious question. It isn't a question of hardware being ready for it as much as the OS isn't optimized enough. To add to vista woes, MS brought out tons of SKUS to further confuse customers.

A friendly conversation I had with an MS employee led to his asking me as to why people wouldn't want to upgrade to the latest supported OS and my response was a local school scenario where the budget for the school doesn't exactly accommodate upgrading 30 PCs to be vista capable. An underpaid overworked school employee in charge of the computing lab would probably find it easier to use XP till the OS is supported and switch to a distribution like Ubuntu OR do a smart thing and make the switch to a Linux distribution now and not worry about the change later.

Also in the above scenario it's easier to get the kids used to a new distribution and even keeps them from the mischief they can do in the windows world. My friend had no answer to this except that if the school made a strong case and appealed for aid, MS might donate hardware and I believed my buddy that MS might actually do it.

This is not a case of MS being ahead in the timeline (BeOS was ahead of its time, not Vista) - this is a case of getting a halfbaked product out (look up "code optimization"). I give you just one example as to why not using Vista is beneficial but I am sure there are tons others.

I am a gamer (and yet I do not care about DX10 for now) and I have stayed away from Vista. I do not want a larger OS - I want an OS optimized for gaming. I have a dual core processor with 3 GB of ram and I do not want an OS that can use it all just for the sake of using resources. I am surprised you have been modded interesting...

Joe brings home his brand new shiny laptop with Vista+bloatware and wonders why he's cursed / why he sucks so much at computing.

I shake my head at Joe the same way I shake my head at people who pay 60$ for "gold plated" HDMI cables at Fry's but it's not my place to educate the 90% of the population.
