Exactly. To get Firefox to even come close to working the way Opera does out of the box, I have to install no less than 5 extensions. And yet, FF still comes in a smaller install package. Also, UserJavascript has thus far been sorely underrated and underused, though it is a relatively new feature.

This isn't a bash on FF--I support it too. But most non-Opera users don't even know what they're talking about.

  10. Re:Power button not a good idea on Nintendo Revolution Controller Revealed · · Score: 1

    Possibilities for the power button:

    1) It's just a power button for the controller, like on a wavebird. This is no problem then, as it's not really in a position that it would likely be hit accidentally during gameplay. And just to be safe, you might have to hold it down for a couple seconds.

    2) It is a power button for the console. Here there a few possibilities. First of all, as with the previous possibility, I don't think it's that likely to get pressed accidentally, and would probably have to be held down anyways.

In the case of multiplayer games, there might be a requirement for all players to be pressing the power button simultaneously for it to work. That way nobody can be an ass.

Finally, it may not completely power down the console, but instead put it in a suspend to RAM standby mode. Of course, I have no idea of the Revolution actually does such a thing, but I wish it did, 'cause that's a feature I'd like to see on all consoles.

I would agree that he still blows away the entire article.

Whether the game has the "realistic" style or the "stylized" style doesn't even really matter. Windwaker was a classic Zelda and had all the gameplay elements there. The new one will be exactly the same, that is, most of the same old Zelda gameplay mechanics will be there. Even if it had the cel-shaded graphics the game would be exactly the same.

  12. I am not a statistician but... on Too Many People in Nature's Way · · Score: 1

By one critical measure, the impact on populations, statistics show the planet to be increasingly unsafe. More than 2.5 billion people were affected by floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters between 1994 and 2003, a 60 percent increase over the previous two 10-year periods, U.N. officials reported at a conference on disaster prevention in January.

I wonder how true this really is relatively speaking. I mean, first of all, the population has grown enormously in the past twenty years. Not to mention, our ability to estimate the sizes of populations, and the number of people affected by natural disasters has no doubt improved in the last twenty years. There are problably other factors as well.

There are no doubt more people at risk of natural disasters than before, but that's probably just because there's so many more people. And the fact is, this planet is having trouble sustaining this many people as it is, so it's no wonder that the more the population grows, the harder it is to keep everyone safe and healthy.

Yes, that sounds like how biology should be taught. As you say, in most US high school biology curriculums, Evolution is pretty much ignored until the teacher gets to the "Evolution" unit in the curriculum. After that it just kinda goes away again and isn't connected to anything else. It's just kinda there.

What they're not doing in biology, that they do do in other classes, is to teach the actual science of biology, as you described in your example. Instead of teaching kids to think like a biologist--to "think critically" as the ID proponents so amusingly promote--most biology classes involve memorization of lots of facts without any basis for understanding why anything works. This turns lots of American kids off from studying or taking interest in biology, myself included.

I think that he's just been realizing that he doesn't have as much "political capital" as he once thought he did, so he knows he has to be careful about where to spend it.

Why lump Bush with other religious leaders who condemn evolution? Because he listens to those very people, closely, and is very much with them on all their other top issues, like anti-gay rights, anti-stem cell research, pro-school prayer, etc...

If you seriously think that this president's thinking is not heavily swayed by religious fundamentalism, you're seriously delusional yourself.

But then Apple's "sloppy" developers didn't make the menus I need easy enoug to reach either. Or at least they didn't make them fast enough to reach. Apple programs still have menus along the top of the screen just like anything else--which to me is a perfectly logical arrangement. Without right-click, there is no context menu. And context menus are what they were talking about when they were talking about making menus easy enough to reach. Sure, there are other ways to access a context menu, but as far as user-friendliness goes, another big shiny button is a lot easier than Control-click.
