I think more than a headcount, what defines Silicon Valley is the innovation, and the leaders that led that invation, that has come out of there in the past few decades.
When India starts producing people like Bill Hewlett, Bill Joy, Steve Jobs, etc... or making things like the mouse, gui, the PC, or ATARI game machines, etc... or has institutions like Stanford or Xerox Parc,etc... then post an article.
I can't figure out what everyone is expecting ?? a big sign that says "THIS WAY TO WMDs" ?? a factory located at "1 WMD plaza" ? WMDs next 3 exits ???
a advert that has saddam saying "just say no to WMDs" ??!?!?!?
The UN gave plenty of time for saddam to hide the WMDs and they could be anywhere in the country or in Syria or seperated and ready for quick assembly.
Saddam has been accused of many things - being stupid isn't one of them
from the article: "People who are serious about getting the job done on time and under budget will use tools such as Visual Basic"
VB development can be quick and easy, but its a tradeoff for the price you will pay later when you want to put your app on the web. After you consider the costs for win2k server, SQL server, and maintaining the servers (patch, reboot, what memory full ?!?! reboot again) you will regret not using a *nix based solution. sure *nix might take more time to program and deploy but once it is up it's easier to maintain.
Also what is the point of the class ? to teach students to slap up code on the web ? or how to develop stable, robust and secure apps if the purpose is the former, then he is right, but if the latter i would stay away from VB
I am a little cynical about IBM's love of Linux. For IBM it is not a question of how great Linux is, as much as how bad AIX sucks.
Face it. If they could make more money selling NT, they would. If the BSDs had the media appeal that Linux has, they would have run a "Peace, Love and BSD" campaign.
He praises companies like Oracle and Sun because the founder still runs the company, and is in touch with the core of the buisiness.
What a hoot! Scott McNealy has defined himself by being anti-microsoft instead of pro Unix/Solaris. Just google the guy. He never talks about Solaris, only about how bad Microsoft is.
Maybe if Sun brought some geeks to the front office, they could bring back some excitement to the Solaris community. Who knows?! Dare I suggest that Sun could even win a benchmark or even make a sale ???
I think the article is on target even if his examples aren't. Cisco is a classic example of the original visionaries being pushed out.
*Disclaimer - I have been unemployed for 6 months as a result of my company being bought and subsequently being laid off.

Oh buls**t ! are VPNs, firewalls, dedicated IPs and other readily inexpensive methods of securing networks so expensive that the "National Infrastructure" companies can't afford them ? Even an OTP scheme could be done on the cheap. What is the yearly profit/budget of these places that they can't afford to even implement even the most basic security measures ?!?!?
Part of being open source is listening to the community. What efforts is Sun taking to listen to what we have to say ? Recent announcements like the discontinuing of Solaris x86 seem to show not only does Sun have no clue of what the Open Source community's wants and needs are, but that you people couldn't care less !

Till then there is not much of a story

I guess you could bet on points instead of cash, and the winner can get a prize.

right. something like " keyboard error press F1 to continue" would be a lot easier for people to deal with.

If you remember when it was a different color, consider yourself the BOFH.
I think that Sun has lost more sales this year to IBM/Linux solutions, than to Microsoft.
One of the things MS does well is that it pre-announces products, thus keeping competitors away.
