    here is a start. there is no particular order to what I have listed. any book here is a great one and a classic. keep in mind that I read (most of) these books 25 years ago and what was good and influential then may not be now.

    unstable means the layout and dependencies are not stable, and prone to change from update to update.

    Oh C'mon !!! Other Distros have had this feature for ages !!!! RH changes tool names and file locations all the time.

    The utility company lost more than $1 million in revenue that would normally have been generated from the pay systems during the time they were down.

    Why ?? The lady in the story paid her bill when the systems came back online.

    I wonder if the companies have some sort of standard on how this is measured.

    The only reason why IBM went w/ Linux is because AIX sucks. Solaris is a killer OS.

    but you are right that they need to learn from IBM

    1)replace thier CEO
    2)become a solution provider. IBM doesn't care whether thier customers buy Linux or W2K. As long as they buy IBM.
    3)diversify.

    The big difference is that no matter how outwardly "dumb" the system is, you still have access to the internals via the CLI and .conf files.

    In the Windows world the user, (or better the admin who is trying to save/fix a broken system) is locked out of that part of the OS

    sometimes you can nail people easier and harder when you make something a federal offence vs. a state law. i think certain types of gun possesion work that way.

    also you can sue the spammer in federal court. although he will not show, the judges ruling may set a precedent to help prosecute onshore spammers.

    i disagree.

    1) it could come out that they get busted on the test run and reveal the whole plot.

    2)the longer it takes for them to find a successfull canidate the better chances are that they get stopped and the longer it takes to put together an attack.

    3) so lets say the get a guy who is the anti-sterotype of a terrorist - he may do other things that trigger the system.

    in the end there is nothing you can do to stop a terrorist or any other criminal for that matter. but you can make it harder for them.

    Consider this - two of the terrorists, Nawaf Alhazmi and Khalid Almihdhar, flying under their real names, were on a State Department watch list. A third had the same address as Alhazmi; two others (including Muhammad Atta) shared a residence with Almihdhar. Five others had the same phone number as Atta. Another had the same frequent-flier number as Almihdhar.

    So yea, I think it's time to shore up the security for the nations airlines.

    BTW - I get screened every time I travel. Sad thing is last time I traveled they put a sticker on my suitcase that said "passenger must travel w/ bag" funny thing is they lost my luggage.

    I had the same experience w/ Nortel . They seem to make great voip equipment but did not seem eager to make a sale. Avaya on the otherhand was great. got me all the info i needed and put in touch w/ the right people. Afterwards they followed through to see if i needed more help.

    My guess is that management uses these techniques to help close down the company.

    If the dev team smells the coffee then they could refuse to release source code, document thier work or system passwords, or potentially cripple the project. (flamebait) I am not judging if the tech team would be wrong in doing this, they many times have a good reason to do so(/flamebait) Not to mention it is always best to end the relationship on good terms because:
    a) maybe things will pick up and you would want to rehire them, or need to pick thier brains about some aspect of the project.
    b) it's a very small world and the techie you 'dissed could very possibly have an influence on the next place mr. management is trying to land a job.

    so yes whatever it takes for management to make a clean break is a good thing.
