actually if anyone has actually tried to check out the UI, its not bad.
The advanced search is not on another page (which is a click and so painful) but a javascripty thing called 'search builder' on the same page.
Of course it takes ages to download on a shared dialup but good thinking by MS.
(there goes my karma)
when I first became an editor of the Open Directory Project http://dmoz.org/ I soon ran out of sites to add to my category. So I went over to Yahoo and stared adding sites that they had...though I didnt copy the reviews cause that wouldn't be right, apart from copyright issues.
Don't see anything wrong in using other peoples work to build on.
During a temporary phase of insanity I got a job (in marketing, no less). One of the first tasks was to get information about our competitors.
I set up a company, got a serviced office and domain. Then I contacted our competitors. Man, it took them ages to reply. Bloody idiots would NOT send me information, demos or even sell me stuff. Took me ages to get any code to check out...
Run a small business, just got a couple of P3 Compaqs quite cheap. Decided thats its time to push Linux to the great unwashed masses, so installed Mepis on the P3s - took about 20 minutes (maybe 10 clicks of the mouse , did the user name thing, didn't really have to think about it).
Handed over to the sales guys. Told them - this is your userid, password; this is for web, this is for text documents (you know, Word). Leave.
An hour later the guys show up on MSN, doing their stuff. No complaints. No questions. No support.
Maybe Linus is wrong about the Desktop market - can't expect him to be in the know about EVERYTHING.:-)
Got contacted by a company that I used to be a reseller for (web based, internet product). Seems that they had sent out monthly commission details to all their resellers as per usual, but this time the xls file had FULL credit card details of ALL the customers...
I hadn't noticed it myself but someone else had! To quote the VP who called later, they "were dying the death of a thousand cuts".
It goes to show that all your security can be bypassed by a silly mistake.
presume you mean 'we will have world peace and everyone will live happily ever after'?
Actually the cultural trade will need to be two-way. As other countries get richer they will also start exporting their culture (anime anyone?). India already produces the largest number of movies in the world, though the revenues are much smaller than Hollywood.
Personally I think cultural trade would be good thing, especially for Americans, who tend to be very parochial.
..is that all the sponsored links (to the right of the article) are all for fax marketing companies. Presumably these companies are in countries where it is legal to send spam fax.
US$1.5 million ? Are there really that many stupid people out there?
I'd say that we will be seeing more of these scams if there is that kind of easy money to be made.
FileZilla is an excellent FTP client with all the options that you may need, but it is not a server.
It might be a bad time if you had patches to apply, but since this is unlikely to happen anytime soon you might as well relax...
come on /.ers http://thankpoland.info/ is still up - go and sign your name.
traditionally, on geting caught, you would have to get married.. I wonder what happens in this case?
do they have land phone lines?
Living in Karachi, I am now starting to get a lot of local Spam. Poeple who hhav just discovered a cheap new way of getting to 200,000 people.
I reply to the email (making sure to change the email address to something like nonon0@spam.cm) and ask them to call me on my mobile phone.
When the call comes in I let them explain about their product (this is costing them money!), then ask them to help me reduce my spam problem....
Any pirate that gives our receipts saying "I installed XP" is asking for trouble and deserves what he gets.
:-)
The guy probably doesn't give receipts anyway - I know my pirate doesn't
nice. how much did it cost?

I'd say that there is no way you could walk into a job like that in Pakistan, India or China. NO WAY at all.
You'd be interviewed and checked out at the very least. Someone would take a copy of your (official) ID card.

No, I don't know the moral of this story.
my understanding is that Vonage uses the voice mail code in Asterix
Well, some people pay for their licences but get pirated software.

The Reg had an amusing story of how some police forces got caught out..

The site has a story titled "26th Annual Turkey Testicle Festival" with a picture of a tray, half empty. http://www.hriders.com/freepictures.asp?category=S potlight%201
:-(
Now I'm assuming that the festival is to do with large avians, not the country, but its still quite disturbing.
that would be 'pelvic', me thinks... :-)

main reason that Sun is better regarded than MS is that Sun ship cool, high performance, high quality products.
MS ship stuff that is luser-friendly.
what? you mean people in the 3rd world can get MS stuff for free?
I've been paying Rs30 for my CDs (thats about 50 cents, US).
Now you tell me....

discovered? surely you mean invented or at least made? To discover the element implies searching for it in the wild.
not surprising. remember when the Aljazeera offices in Kabul got bombed? Precision munitions, dood :-)
