A modchip is something you solder into a console that disables the copy protection. The first ones i can think of were for the Playstation. They let you play imported and burned games.
As far as WHY... well, if you have to ask, you'll never know =). If you want to do some homebrewed developing, play imported games, or (heaven forbid) pirate games, modchips will let you do that, whereas those things are impossible on a "stock" console.
2) Alot more people would buy the music if they sold them directly over the internet.
That is very, very true. And they won't be selling JUST to geeks, either. I know a guy, in his 50s, who uses his computer for e-mail, web browsing, word processing, and music. He's signed up for some music service over the internet where he pays about $1/song. He LOVES it. And he's a "joe sixpack", only a little older.
They don't want a large underground group releasing non-sony licensed games.
Homebrew developers are, for the most part, what keep the Dreamcast "alive" today. There's an unbelievable ammount of free, homebrewed software for the DC. Take a look. There are emulators, puzzle games, racing games, and even first person shooters (both quake ports and original works) being developed by joe programmer using GCC and some hacked libraries.
It'd bet that the users who still codes for the DC is the same one that Sony is trying to reach with the Linux kit.
My highschool doesn't own one piece of educational software, except some geometry thing that's liscense has run out. My school, and probably most schools, have student-accessable computers for word processing, web research, and the few computer courses offered (BASIC programming, CISCO, etc). A lack of educational software isn't a big deal.

Neither can Opera users who identify themselves as either Opera or Mozilla. Switch the identifier to IE 5.0, however, and the personal profile page suddenly works perfectly. Way to go, MS.
I was just wondering if that would work. Can you still reboot your iMac now? Is everything "ok"? If so, why do the people at MacUser insist you have to send your iMac off for repairs? Sure, it makes Sony (and the RIAA) look bad, but its likely to cause unnecessary hassles for iMac owners.
U. S. Patent No. 4,359,631 is the highest cited patent in its class. Together, with its reexamined reissue B1 Re. 32,115 having been cited as prior art to 133 patents, which is more than 20 times greater than the expected frequency of cites of the average U.S. patent with about five cites per patent.
From here. Does that statement hold any relavence to the situation, or are those 133 prior art victories just small companies giving in?
God forbid Apple include high quality, free (as in beer), useful programs with their OS.
Last i checked, it didn't take much to get rid of iTunes, or iMovie, or Quicktime. Drag the application's folder to the trash and you're free of it forever. Delete a few extensions (at least in OS 9) and Quicktime is gone.
On my PC, where's the uninstaller for Windows Media Player? Hmm... guess MS forgot one. What about their shit movie editing app? Oh, damn, can't get rid of that either!
At least they're sending the CDs in useful cases - i've gotten a few in DVD cases as well as one in a sturdy plastic case inside of a slightly larger tin case. I love free stuff.
That addition is there to help them win, which isn't the true aim of the competition. Having something spin doesn't require AI or self-balancing functions, it can just spin. Pretty soon it will just be a bunch of spinning blades going after a ball. Then we just have BattleBots + soccer ball. The true innovation will come from the humaniod tournaments.
That's exactly how it is for me. I love to code, so when i don't feel like doing it, i really don't feel like doing it. But if i get a new idea, or just feel like being creative (as opposed to blowing someone to bits), i get into "the zone." Of course, it takes one whiny person to get me out, but if i can enjoy peace and quiet, i'm gone for hours.

I agree 100% - his post was complete FUD.

Of course they violate the DMCA. Sony just hasn't deemed them worthy of their giant lawsuit hammer.
You can't rocket jump in paintball. And there's no quad damage.
It was designed to break copy protection, which is a no-no according to the DMCA, whether you really have a right to copy lit or not.
Should you tell it to, Opera will do that. I'd say its one of the best features of the browser.

Their FTP servers are already own3d. Bummer.

I wouldn't be surprised if the people who were pushing for this ruling were the ones who picked the games for him to see.
So this is all a conspiracy to frame Nitrogen?

You, sir, have hit one giant nail right squarely on the head. Took the words right out of my mouth. Major props (and kudos) to you.
Especially considering that the majority of people visiting that site will know to avoid .NET like the plague.

Here's a remote at Lik-Sang, but its "not available". You can get a remote in this VCD pack, though. And its only $25!
Here's the list.

OK, so how do i find out that one of my machines is doing this and how do i fix it?
