  1. Re:Who would want one? on Establishing the Maximum Speed of a CD-ROM Drive · · Score: 1

And that's why Kenwood doesn't own the CD-ROM market. Some of the drives worked fine, and some were damn crappy (like yours). My father had one that would read every CD my Toshiba and Teac drives could read, but a friend of mine's wouldn't read a brand new Tribes CD. And they were damn expensive.

  2. Re:Who would want one? on Establishing the Maximum Speed of a CD-ROM Drive · · Score: 2, Interesting

The kenwood 72x used either 5 or 7 lasers (i can't remember which) to read really fast but spin at a lower speed. I wouldn't be surprised if the same multi-laser tech is applied in future CD- and DVD-ROMs.

Some? I'd say the majority. Very few kids who are targeted by this (not all of them, however) know what's "up" with internet advertising - they see a banner that proclaims they're a winner of something, and *clicky*clicky*!

My younger brother, who is 14, insists on clicking on those banners because he wants his "prize." What does he use most on the internet? Instant messengers. It won't be that hard to trick him into buying something by just claiming its "really cool" or "really good, the next big thing."

    Example

    SmarterChild: Hi, what's your name?
    StupidBrother: Ryan
SmarterChild: Hi Ryan, what do you like to do?
StupidBrother: Skateboard, mountain bike, play soccer (i'm good at that)
SmarterChild: Wow! You know what i heard? There's this great deal on skateboard trucks and wheels at www.skateboardingrulez.com! Go check it out!
::StupidBrother then procedes to beg for said trucks and wheels at www.skateboardingrulez.com, parents immediately cave, everyone is happy::

As long as there are different distros, that isn't a huge concern.

Yes, the larger, commercial distros (read: Red Hat) are catching flak for becoming more and more bloated, but so what? It seems that the big OSS afficiandos run Debian, Slackware, Mandrake, or some other distro - no "true geek" runs Red Hat. Of course, i have absolutely no facts to back that up, but hey, this is Slashdot.

Its not that i don't want to see Red Hat succede, its just that in order to attract the average yuppie, you need the bells and wistles that make people go "wow..." and those features inevitably bloat the OS. Of course, it'll still be a cold day in hell before Red Hat, let alone all Linux distros, is even close to being as bloated as Windows.

Sure, call yourself a video game purist, but ya know what? The casual gamers far outnumber the "purists." MS and Sony are selling to the "weekend fragger," if you will.

Also, you make no mention of the multiplayer, which with the internet play hack (if you want to call it that) can more than make up for the faults you list.

  15. Re:i hate to say it on Time Warner to Charge Extra for Over-Quota Bandwidth · · Score: 1

Does it really require more engineers and sysadmins to watch over the same fiber lines as their bandwidth use increases? If the costs of operating the network go up, you either raise the prices out of greed, or take the hit and keep your customers happy (assuming the prices don't double or triple). But i don't think it takes two nerds, instead of one, to watch my Quake packets zoom over the cables. The engineers are STILL maintaining the SAME network. Whether there's one person sending an e-mail on it, or 100 playing Unreal, the network has to function - how much data it has to transmit while functioning doesn't matter.

Of course, none of that logic matters either - Time Warner is trying to set an overall cap on how much we can use in a month. I wouldn't be surprised if they want to lower the bandwidth they use, and in turn lower costs, and this is a scare tactic to allow them to do it.

  16. Re:i hate to say it on Time Warner to Charge Extra for Over-Quota Bandwidth · · Score: 5, Insightful

I understand the net access limiting in college dorms - most people in college don't give a shit about bandwidth, so they just let kazaa/morpheus run unrestricted all they want - it isn't their money. They just end up fucking the people who really need the bandwidth. These people NEED bandwidth limits.

However, excedding bandwidth limits on a cable modem is not supposed to happen. That's what the 12k/sec cap on uploads is there for, right? If they want to charge me for the extra bandwidth i use, why not allow me to take all my alloted bandwidth in one lump sum? If i upload the latest release of my Linux distro once a month, i'll be using, say, 600 megs of "bandwidth" that month. What difference does it make to them if i spend 10 hours uploading it, or 2 minutes? I still use the same ammount, and still have to pay extra when i go over.

I don't think its fair that they implement upload caps to limit our bandwidth usage, and then say how much we can use what little sending speed we have. Of cours, this is corporate America, and nothing is fair from the consumer's point of view.
