No, they are not locking down networks because of the **AA, they are locking them down for the cost of bandwidth.
Most colleges do an excess of 1500GB+ of data each day through their Internet link. Now, imagine you are the guy in charge of handing out this bandwidth....I am friends with mine.
Reducing P2P bandwidth cuts your job time probably by 3/4.
Flowers are the best short-term investment you can make with a woman.
Every week, I buy my girlfriend a tiger lily. She absolutely loves it, and it makes her room look nice.
Flowers are gold. Buy them on a regular basis.
Note: Go to a flower shop across campus (assuming you are in college), and walk back to her room with a rose in your hand. You will attract more women than you ever thought possible. And think, they know that you are taken, and they are still interested.
We seem to share the same opinion about liberal arts majors. Although there is one big difference...
As a friend and I were talking, I noted:
"Why shouldn't I just become a slacker business major and quit engineering?"
Her words shed light on my motives: "Because you'd just be bored."
She was absolutely right.
Technical knowledge is amazing in its ability to awe people. Even simple Newtonian physics can spark someone's interest in you. I can't imagine studying anything else but engineering.
My roommate says: "Engineering is all about learning everything about everything, and then being able to apply that knowledge anywhere. You need to be able to do anything."
I was born a programmer, but I am working in optics now. For me, engineering is the only way to go.
For two years, I worked at a restaurant at a beach in Newport. It was by far the best job I had ever had. I would arrive around 9AM, and not leave till 6:30PM. I was on my feet all day, and only had 30 minutes for lunch.
There's something about cooking and serving food (not to mention the women in bikinis) that makes me feel good. It was incredibly demanding in both a physical and mental sense (no computers for order taking).
Last year I worked as an accountant. The place was air conditioned, comfy chairs, had my own office...etc. I hated it. Being on my feet for 9+ hours a day was nothing compared to the bore of accounting.
I'm an engineer, but I really derived the most satisfaction out of working that restaurant job.
Then when I came home, I was all set to be a nerd for a few hours.
Some jobs that people perceive as mindless can really offer great things, and not be mindless at all.
In the news today, Penguin Airlines lost half their fleet today as Slashdotters overloaded their plane's computer systems.
On a lighter note, future passengers will not have to use a Passport (get it...Microsoft) because of conflicts with the OS of their planes and general hatred of Microsoft.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't our skin go through changes almost daily. We shed skin cells, we grow new ones...etc
I can't imagine that this technique could be very reliable...what if you get a bad sunburn or a "good" suntan.
I guess you could measure that itsy bitsy piece of skin that never sees sunlight...but this isn't common to everyone, and even that must go through changes.
I suppose these are some of the questions that must be answered in all fields of biometrics before we have a comprehensive identity solution.
I never justified what I was doing as being "right."
I am not taking credit for other's works.
Note: see parent article....it suggests the industry looks at people's reasons for downloading their works. I listed my reasons. I made no references to moral/ethical questions.
You think downloading movies and music is illegal and should be prosecuted, thats fine. I presented my views as a grounds for changing an aging business model, nothing more, nothing less.
You can chastise me all you want, call me a bullshitter...whatever. It doesn't change the reality of the situation in the digital world.
Mark, Although I appreciate the argument you have laid forth, I find some flaws in it.
The digital domain and the "real world" are two completely different places, and need to obey different sets of rules.
If I take your Ferarri, you don't have a vehicle, which means you can't easily get to your job, go buy necessary items for daily survival..etc. If I download a movie, I haven't deprived anybody of their property in the sense you are implying. Stealing cars and other people's personal property is along different lines.
Also, I was replying to a comment about motivations behind copying movies off the net. So, I listed my motives. I believe that was the intent of the previous author, and needs to be the intent of the specific industries. I'm not doing anything malicious, and I try not to be an asshole.
"Know your enemy", as a common cliche goes. The industries need to know their enemies, which is the only way they will eventually profit.
Maybe some important executive will read my comments and think "Wow...if other people think this way, and I can make money off of it, lets go for it!!!"
Feel free to pick my comments to pieces. You have your opinions, and I have mine.
I watch movies off the net for a variety of reasons:
Renting a movie implies driving off campus, finding a video store, renting the movie, and returning it in a timely fashion.
Problem 1: No car. Problem 2: No video rental stores within 5 miles.
Purchasing DVD's is not out of the question, but buying more than a few a year stresses my budget. I did buy Oceans 11 and Lock Stock...Since I wore out my HD watching them on divx. Problem 1: Students' incomes are quite low, and not continuous all year long. Problem 2: I need to buy books. Textbooks are expensive. Problem 3: 10 DVDs * $20 each = $200. 200 bucks is a large percentage (don't laugh) of my annual income.
Since the advent of CD's, I have only bought about 3. These CD's were compilations, since most artists don't have an entire CD of great songs. It's not that I enjoy downloading mp3s, but there is no way in hell i will pay $20 for a little plastic disc with 2 decent songs on it. As mentioned in another comment, paying for a service to deliver high quality music to my desktop is not out of the question.
It needs to be always on, and able to stream at 50kb/sec.
Make it known that you can have any song, anywhere, anytime, and people will pay for this service. I know I would.
Availablity and price are the two things killing the music and movie industry today. Provide a low cost, easily accessable way to watch movies and listen to music, make it easier and faster than current P2P, and your industry will start raking in money.

What path would you take?
Well that's fine if your ISP charges you for emails numbering 1000+. I'll just start an ISP with no limit to undercut you and make more money. I win.
Sadly, this is how the business world works.
Can't we all just be engineers?
my 640k is working out just fine for me as well
60gb?
I have 280GB on my workstation and another 200GB in a fileserver under my desk....give me more space
What I want to see is Osama getting it on with the attractive female maid.
I wonder what their child would look like. You may have to construct a cave attached to the house.
Just block the cellular signals like microwaves block those harmful waves from frying your brain.
A wire mesh with holes smaller than the wavelength of cell phones will entirely block all signals.
It can be added inside insulation, or even around the outside of the buildingn with minimal asthetic intrusion.
I'm so glad I paid attention in E & M.
From the looks of the hi-res pictures on their website, Internet2 is going to need the extra bandwidth. Viva la Slashdot Effect!
I am wondering how long after speech was developed that women evolved a nagging gene.
I think we can probably pinpoint this event to when men started living much shorter lives than their female counterparts.

I've gotta disagree with you here.

may be a bit restrictive though......
that was probably the funniest post I have read yet
you just made my workday a hell of a lot better

No apologies necessary.
We're all adults here....sorta

Evolve or become extinct.

I live in Rhode Island.
I go to school in Connecticut.
It sucks to live either place.
Recommendation: Move to the middle of a large western state. At least you will know for sure which shitty state you are a resident of.
As I see it, the next step for this software is to repel all co-workers and bosses who think they are smarter than you.
Maybe you can write a script that keeps these pests away when servers go down or when somebody approaches your desk.
At the very least they will be complaining from 2m (6 feet) or more. At that distance, you can hopefully just shut the door.

Silly journalist....there is no such thing as centrifugal force.
Centripital. Yes.
Oh how I love rotating bodies.
ah....the 403 Too Many Users Connected is my favorite error message of all time
I'm at UCONN, and would love to hear of a University network that can get sustained transfers (inside and outside) of 700k/sec+.
The best I can hope for internally on Windows filesharing is about 200k/sec...use AIM direct connect, and that jumps to about 600k/sec.
I believe the NetBIOS protocol is at fault here. Even though it may be TCP.
(sarcasm) Thank god most of our network is hubs, and not switches, or else we might have lots more packet collisions.
Quoting from a report in Biden's website:
...an individual can download a full-length feature movie in less than 15 minutes....
I'd really like to know where to get that kind of bandwidth, and how much it would be per month.
700MB / 15 min = 46.67MB / min = 777k/sec
Please God...hook me up to that pipe.
Isn't it funny how on the "Find your Representative" page, you have to enter your State, and then your Zip Code.
Doesn't the zip take care of that shiznit?
