"If someone is redeemable, then hopefully they themselves or their family with interdict and get them out before they get killed or kill someone." Did you mean to say "will intervene"? because as it stands that sentence made no sense at all. I'm not trying to be a grammar or spelling nazi, I just honestly am not sure where you were going with that. Aside from that, I can only partially agree with what you are saying. There certainly are BAD people, but it's not necessarily the crack-smuggling kids on the street that are the worst. What about the white -collar criminals that are stealing from the people and causing much of the poor conditions these kids live in? I'm all for shooting them; what about you?

I'm no fan of Ayn Rand, but I think that was a little harsh. Ayn Rand wasn't the very source of evil upon the earth, as Ann Coulter has taken upon herself to be. You didn't see Ayn arguing that women should be denied the right to vote, ex-soldiers should be "fragged", and whatever insane babble comes out of that terrible woman's mouth or pen.

I'm not so sure the path out of poverty that you suggest works anymore. Yes it did work for the US, Europe, etc, but the problem now is that we've become so efficient at outsourcing work that as soon as China's living wages start to rise, we'll drop them for the Phillipines, Zimbabwe, or wherever else we can get work the cheapest. I suppose you could say this will cause the whole world to rise, but I have a feeling its going to take a LONG time for that to make a difference.

Go sleep at the homeless shelter in your area and you'll pay nothing for rent, and STILL have better living conditions than they do. Try again.

That would be true if they all got fixed, but having worked in the business for a little while I can say that most companies know of hundreds, perhaps thousands of small bugs in their code, but they just don't know the manpower or motivation to get them all fixed.

While I mainly agree with you on this topic, I do have to say that The Gimp is made fun of all the time here on Slashdot. Almost every time The Gimp is mentioned in an article there is an inevitable comparison between it and Photoshop in the comments, and someone always brings up how ineffective the name is. Not to mention that to Pulp Fiction fans like me it brings up images of a strange man stored in a basement with a black mask over his face. . . not the most pleasant of imagery.

This actually is not the right way to think about it from an economic stand point. You are right that the project should be continued, but it has nothing to do with the 150 thousand already spent. That can, and should, be ignored completely. What is important here is that you can make $70000 by only spending $20000, which any good business man would never turn down. Its an expected profit of $50000. At any given point in the project you should be able to ask yourself, "Will I be making more at the end of this project than I still have to spend to finish it?" If the answer is ever no, the project should be canceled immediately; at least if your goal is maximizing expected value.

I don't mean to be rude... but clearly you don't understand what a royal flush is in poker. A Royal flush is the highest of the straight flushes, meaning it is a straight and a flush. Or in other words, the cards rankings are in order, and are all of the same suit. In your example, all 4 players would have a straight, but only one of them could have a flush, and therefore a royal flush.

They need to ask theirselves some serious questions BEFORE making these announcements, such as "Does anyone more than Joe PornDownloader have any desire to pay extra for such a fast connection?" If the answer to that was really yes, which I don't believe it is, I imagine they would be in a much bigger hurry to get this sort of thing built.

On a side note, I still don't have a gmail account and would really like to get one. If anyone would like to help me out with that, email me at psyonick@yahoo.removeme.com (and don't forget to remove the removeme). Thanks.
