mal-jelly certainly is bass-akwards, calling rome enlightened & the church the cause of the dark ages...it was the church that preserved the texts, & the language, until the enlightenment...
his rearview mirror should have a warning: events in mirror are in reverse order;-)
i run tiger on clamshell ibooks (300-466mHz) w/320-576mB and it's usable, if not always pleasant...otoh, 10.4 on a 400mHz g4 powermac w/agp graphics & 2gB is barely tolerable...
but it's getting harder to keep apps updated: vlc's latest 1.0rc2 sez
Support for Mac OS X 10.4.x was dropped due to its technical limitations:-(
by the time nadir[tm;-] came out with unsafe-a-a-s, the 2nd gen. corvair had a fully independent rear suspension, and arguably handled better than the corvette of the era.
but i can attest to the vicious whip-spins of the pre-64s (which had a camber compensator to limit the swing axle's jacking effect when braking...or even letting off...in a turn) i spun my '63 2x, learned not to do THAT;-)
i've been trying to put linux on an old dell laptop for my bro-in-law...it's only got 256mb/500mHz, he can't afford to drop even $400 on a new machine.
i finally found dreamlinux...works like a...;-) wireless just works (wicd rules:-) even suspend works...on the live cd. installed, close the lid, it wakes up to a black screen:-( try configuring the power manager from the control panel, it starts up another instance, running as the logged-in user...1st instance is root's, so any config changes have no effect:-P gksudo/usr/bin/gconf-editor fixed that, but still black-screen on wake:-(
and wanna watch a dvd? just install libdvdcss2...after enabling the lenny multimedia repository (sudo vi/etc/apt/sources.list, not something a microserf would consider doing;-) totem worked, but jerky, so i installed vlc...how to set vlc as dvd-insertion default? simple: gksudo/usr/bin/gnome-volume-properties.../usr/bin/gconf-editor also pokes the same config files...
and none of these basic config utils are in the control panel, & the ones that are are broken or break a functioning system:-P
back in 1984, shortly after ronnie fired all the strikers, i rented a room from a replacement atc who told me that not only do atcs swing shifts weekly, they swing back: taking an earlier shift, similar in effect to flying east: it's easier to adjust to flying west (later.)
since it takes ~2 weeks to adjust fully to a schedule change, our air transportation system is being run by sleep-deprived zombies;-{
of course unions protect their dues-payers, and of course school districts work to subvert them...too bad they all forgot why they're there:-(kids, in case u missed the obvious;-)
reminds me of the story a co-worker told me ~25 yrs ago: he'd just graduated from a teacher's college & was recruited by a rural school system (arkansas, iowa, can't remember)
he moved there, joined the local instantiation of his parents' church for the social networking...the little old ladies were ecstatic a fine young man had moved into the area, wanting to intro him to their daughters/nieces when they came home from college on vacay, to try to get them not to move away...the midwest has continued to suffer depopulation:-(
new hires were on probation, no tenure for a year or 2...after which they were fired & a new batch brought in, a classic case of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom_management unfortunately, the schools had no choice, with falling budgets from falling tax bases from falling population...funny how the repubs push for standards of education but not standards of funding of education...
after all, the y axis is appropriately named;-) the cost of a good is plotted on the real axis, the market price is the resultant, theta is a measure of perception...
i'm willing to give him the b-o-t-doubt...i certainly haven't been briefed & know enough to have an informed opinion, but that's never hindered the/. crowd;-)
20+ yrs ago i read a book (can't remember the title right now) about the rise of english...while it is a difficult 2nd language to learn, due to the chaotic spelling, that is the result of english's greatest strength: it has the largest vocabulary of any language (> 0.5e6 words) because it absorbs words from everywhere (usually retaining their original spellings, adding to the exceptions;-)
english is also a the defacto language of air traffic control...aren't you glad they say "jet" instead of "l'avion de le reaction";-)
and as an adherent to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapir%E2%80%93Whorf_hypothesis i'm glad english is not monophonic: having more than 1 way to spell a sound (or pronounce a spelling;-) leads to more diverse thinking, and an acceptance of diversity...note that it was the _spanish_inquisition;-)
1st, lo-income housing is usually well-ventilated: leaks & drafts from bad weatherstripping; upscale houses are usually v.tight, ironically leading to poor ventilation, unless u go further upscale & install heat exchangers...
according to a colonial officer reenactor, w.r. is a shooting term meaning the ability to concentrate fire...thus the 2nd amendment has nothing to do with fucking lawyers writing fucking regulations;-)
dan brown;-)
2 many mice are flushed every year, clogging the nation's sewers:-( the proper way to dispose of unwanted mice is to feed 'em to snakes;-)
