    there was a display in d.c. some time ago of russian war booty: hitler's desk, swastika-etched globe, military banners (direct descendants of medieval heraldy)...and nazi & russian small arms: the german guns were beautifully machined, but each took a unique ammo; the russian were stamped-steel, but all took the same round, a major logistical advantage...

    i always enjoy the wacky thoughts i get drifting in & out of sleep, but recently i had a very interesting auditory experience.

    usually the furnace fan has a lulling whoosh, but 1 morning i woke up hearing it stuttering: on-off-on-off, as tho it was gonna explode. but fully awake, all i heard was the normal sound.

    as i dropped off again, i heard it quit again, or rather i stopped hearing it: apparently, the part of my brain that listens fell asleep before the rest of me;-) when i noticed it had stopped, i heard it again; this happened several times;-)

    i dunno, maybe not consciously, but i'm sure we are still affected subconsciously...

    i've heard that a women prefer the scent of men most UNlike their fathers...scent being closely tied to genotype & the immune system, this is a good thing for diversity...unfortunately, women on the pill, so i've heard, are the opposite...

    just a WAG, but perhaps the rise in allergies/immune system problems (autism, another RWAG) started with the pill...

    the wife's camry's hands-free bluetooth link also locks out dialing when rolling...it only allows calling stored numbers...but of course all u have 2 do is dial the phone directly;-)

    btw, tech-driven driver distraction is nothing new: the installation of radios in cars was decried as dangerous;-}

    and recent research http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/31426/title/Shifting_priorities_at_the_wheel has shown that the brain just can't handle 2 competing processes:-(

    i rented a room with one of the replacements...he told me that not only do they swing shifts _weekly_ (and it takes @ least 2 weeks to adjust to a time shift of that magnitude) they also swing forward: working an earlier shift, even though it's easier to adjust to a later shift (just as it's easier to fly west than east).

    thus the faa deliberately kept its atcs in a state of sleep-deprivation, jeopardizing not only their health, but also the safety of the airline passengers:-(
