A major newspaper gives up printing on paper to publish exclusively online.
This actually already happened late last year.
Digg holds out for a big payday but ends up like Friendster (i.e., no friends).
This point should perhaps come with the disclaimer that Digg-competitor Reddit.com is owned by Wired.
IIRC one important conclusion was that the libraries feared getting in a position where users started to expect support from them regarding the products. I could imagine that computer stores would have similar reservations.
A search for Linux on Google reveals ads from Microsoft. Could this be a sign of what the article talks about?
Disclaimer: The ad is in Danish, and it may thus be only the Danish branch of MS buying these adwords. It's possible that similar ads won't show up if the same search is done from other countries.
P.S.: If the ads show up, feel free to click them. Wouldn't want Google to miss out on a bit of revenue, would you?:)

It seems to contain a lot about extension development in Firefox. Perhaps a more fitting name would be "Developer's guide to Firefox" or something similar.
Various extension developers have contributed to the book, among them Ben, who develops Adblock. More info in his blog.
Be careful with the donations. It's possible that the alleged friend is just someone trying to make some quick money on the case. Hold back the donations until you see an official link from Katie's homepage.
She already mentioned in the interview that she hasn't accepted any donations yet, but has been offered plenty.
I realize that it's only an option on si20. I'm complaining about the general concept of authentication, and the selfishness of the people who choose to use it... Not si20.
E-Mail Authentication Service ensures your email was sent by a real person. When someone emails you for the first time they are asked a very simple question that only a human can answer. Once they answer, they can send you email without a hitch and they never have to authenticate again.
Newsflash: Spammer's fake the return address!... So by using authentication you're just pushing the problem to other people, in effect spamming then! About the selfiest behaviour found on the net today.
A specialized search engine developed by engineers at Purdue University allows users to draw a sketch of a part or to select one from a database. The system then returns parts having similar shapes. They call it shape searching.
Enough with the fancy marketing buzzwords and hype phrases already!! When will people, who invent new technology, just pick a name that describes the technology??... oh, wait...
I once absend-mindedly ordered Three Mile Island dressing in a restaurant and, with great presence of mind, they brought Thousand Island Dressing and a bottle of chili sauce.
Also in use in the exhibition of architecture by Daniel Liebeskind at the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Extremely neat. You approach a screen showing a movie, and your headphones synchronize perfectly to the film. Works very well.
Perhaps it was this quote that made the submitter think of "1984":
Our phones monitor our ability to reach this magic number as well as the total number of calls we take, the number of times we ask for help, how much time we take between calls, even the amount of time we spend in the restroom. In short, your phone is always watching you.

It's not part of that exact joke, it is the way that the comic is drawn in all strips. I find the comic to be very recommendable. Check out the rest of archive at http://www.wulffmorgenthaler.com/. The strips range from ok to hilarious.

From the CNET article: One of the key ways Yahoo plans to make money from its search platform is to charge companies for more rapid and frequent inclusion into its index--a program called paid inclusion.
Read: "Google is still king". I want an objective search engine, not one where companies can pay for placement. It seems very stupid of Yahoo! to introduce a product that is flawed this way, if they really want to take on Google. Google has the advantage of currently being considered the best search engine by almost everyone, so Yahoo! needs a superior product if they are serious about getting more popular.
I think it is interesting to take a look at what happened to the XBOX. It is basically the system you're describing as "x86 or PPC CPUs, hard drives, etc." and it got modded all over the place. People today are using it for viewing copied movies, DVDs from all regions, general media center and a lot of other stuff. Things it was never meant to do!
I don't see the big corporations taking over as long as this can happen... And "Yay!" to that!:D
Reading your post, I wish that the moderation system had a "+1 Scary".
I doubt it will happen though. Some terminal systems may come that are nothing but internet-enabled TVs, but I doubt that anyone will manage to move the internet away from the basic protocols, which allow us all to create our own applications, and not just sit around waiting for the corporations to do it for us.
I don't think such functionality is available for Firebird, although I can't rule out the possibility. The number of extensions is vast. Check out Mozdev.
I would like to add that you are a rather special case, and that it can't be easy to maintain Yahoo! companion on all the systems you work with. Don't you think that a web-based bookmark collection might serve You better?

It's a tragedy for the people involved in the story.
I can't help but wonder if this story would have been posted under "It's funny. Laugh" if it had been an American company firing American workers.
Is it only funny because it is happening half a world away?

What is the best browser for MS platform?? Mozilla, Opera,?? Let a brother know.
Mozilla Firebird is a lean, mean browsing machine. Highly recommended. Remember not to click the link if you're in IE!
