How would it look to his big (and only) US carrier partner locked in for 5 years or whatever it is, if he said "We condone the hackers and their unlocking software". What they actually do about it will really tell the story, and that's a wait and see game, so no use speculating.

If you look at The Xbox360 and it's Live service. You have to pay for it. They should have something like this, where MS gets the money from it, and users who contribute cycles can earn money off their Live services fees! (Probably capped to the cost of the Live service) That seems like it would make the most sense to me.

Of course, if Playstation 3 isn't charging for online access, then maybe it can be used to earn credits to purchasing stuff.

And for the Nintendo camp, how about earning those Wii points with contributing cycles! That'd be awesome!

If you look at the software sales data, the only company whose games are selling well for the Wii is Nintendo. By all accounts the hardware is selling faster than the Xbox 360, but the software isn't. It's almost as if Nintendo created the single game that people want to play on the Wii (and they're willing to pay $250 to play it).

You have to take into account the fact that Nintendo software devs have had a LOT more time to think about it and to experiment with it. It'll take some time for the 3rd party devs to start getting better at it, but Tiger '07 is a pretty good "first draft". I bought it on launch, and I like it. I can see huge potential for it as they tweak it for '08 and make it even better.

I consider myself a pretty hardcore gamer. I spend most of my free time playing games. I'm not a fan of consoles, I'm a PC gamer. However, I own a Wii and love it. When I'm bored of my PC games (mostly FPS, I play a little EVE too) etc it's nice to relax playing some Twilight Princess or Rayman (As much as you can relax while playing Rayman =p).

The Wii remote makes the console what it is. Most console controllers are clunky and hard to move your character or AIM but the Wii-mote makes it simple and easy.

I should have probably expanded my definition of "uber-hardcore" gamer :) I myself would be considered a hardcore gamer as well. And yes, I've owned many systems and for this generation I only have a Wii and waiting for some huge price drops on the PS3 so I can play assassin's creed :)

Anyways, by "uber-hardcore" I'm talking about those kidz that are too-cool-for-school, kidz that think entire sentances can be constructed soley out of profanity. They like screaming into the mic when playing Counter-Strike, and play games mainly to kill things. :)

The only people I know that don't really like it are the uber-hardcore gamers. I know plenty of "hardcore" gamers that love it fine, but complement it with a dose of the 360/PS3.

So let's think about their target market now. The uber-hardcore don't like it. Fine. But the hardcore like it and ... <drumroll> ... the rest of the world loves it :) That's a big market. Much bigger than the old target market. When sales data like this comes out, it just reinforces the notion that Nintendo got something right this round.

Here's my real advice though, don't listen to anyone here, not even me :) Go out to a store, and look for yourself!

Also keep in mind what you're going to use it for. If you're going to watch a lot of DVDs on it (for example), bring a DVD with you, and make them hook up DVD players to the TVs you're interested and see how it looks. Even try out the up-converting DVD players see, how that goes. I even had a sales guy move a TV to where there was a cable outlet, so I can see what regular SD cable TV looked like on it, because frankly, there wasn't that much HD content back when I got my TV (over 3 years ago). (Thankfully, all the primetime TV shows are in HD now, some Leaf games are in HD, and all NFL games are in HD :) )

Anyways, I repeat, go to a store, look at it for yourself, and remember, the stores will splice HD content to their TVs, so if your usage habits are mostly SD, get them to somehow get some SD content on their so you know how good of a job the TV does upconverting.

Please, don't talk about the Wii as a ripoff troll.

The only people we know for sure that's happy about all those consoles being moved is Nintendo.

*(1) Although, if you take console sales as an indirect indicator of software sales, then yes, the other guys would be happy too. More on this later

What we do know is this:

    * Nintendo makes money on the Wii, right out of the gate.
    * Nintendo makes money on each DS Lite sold.
    * Sony's PS3 is losing $200-$300US (we don't exactly how much they're losing, but most analysts say about that range)
    * Sony's PS2 hardware is profitable now.
    * Microsoft was losing money on the Xbox360 at launch, but they've been working hard to reduce the cost to produce the 360, so it may be breaking even at this point. Only Microsoft knows.

So, Nintendo is certainly happy, Sony is happy PS2 still rakes it in but doesn't make up for PS3's enourmous costs, and Microsoft is happy to just be in the fight :)

*(1) Consoles moved means more software sales, which is where Microsoft and Sony plan to make their money back. (Nintendo makes money from selling ANYTHING with Nintendo on it, so we know they'll make money on software. They arguably make the most on software than any other single console game producer) Seems the internet believes Microsoft is enjoying a good software sales rate for their xbox360, they won't say of course. Meanwhile, Sony is just mum. Why? well, doesn't seem the attach rate for the PS3 is doing so hot in the US or Japan. So Sony's still far away from making money on their new system.

My point? The industry may or may not be happy, we don't know for sure, but we do know, Nintendo is happy with these numbers :)

PS WTF's with the 0.98 attach rate for PS3 in Japan?! That's amazing to me. I know lots of people are flipping these on ebay, but even in the land of the rising sun, people aren't buying it to play games. That's bad news. Japan's a huge Sony supporter. If they lose Japan, they're in trouble.

Yes, it is your opinion, so I can't argue that. But I can argue that your opinion stinks, and you obviously have zero experience with it. Just took the wii to a friend's place last weekend.
