The idea is neat. Imagine if most surfaces where people spend some time (e.g. restaurants, cafes and so on) had these. You wouldn't need to fully charge your device in one go but you'd be continually charging them a bit.
Now if only companies could agree on ONE standard so that IKEA could ALSO sell those tables and countertops and what-have-you and they could then charge ALL of your devices, because the tech could be built-in from the beginning by any manufacturer.
I mean, what's the big idea? Should I buy different tables for my HTC Android, for the PSP and the iPod?
That most powerful supercomputer, I'd assume, has not been tuned to actually work like a brain would.
This is like an emulator. A lot of computational power is probably wasted on trying to translate biological functions into binary procedures. I think if they truly want to compare, they'll need to create an environment that is enhanced for the tasks we want it to process.
Nobody expects the human brain to compute integer and floating point stuff at the same efficiency either, right?
Whenever someone says that without copyright, nothing of value would be created anymore, I just have to think back to Pablo Picasso and all the riches he amassed through his art. After all, without copyright, everyone could have copied him and thus taken away his well deserved reward without which he would never have painted in the first place.
I hate being too late for these kinds of posts, but.... First I was going "WTF, full access only at 15 years?!" then I realised, that was when you thought it the right time to give them the talk.
W.T.F?!
I assume you mean the talk about the proverbial birds and bees. Let's omit the fact that giving one big talk about this topic is kind of overwhelming and paints a picture of this being something of a secret, something of a big thing that needs to be made a big deal out of. It's not. It's just another natural fact like eating, breathing and so on.
And at 15? Dude, I don't know how uninterested in that topic your boys are, but for me, that'd come seven years too late. Perhaps I just had a head start, I don't know, but FIFTEEN?!
At any rate, it always amuses me when people like yourself come online, go "Look at how enlightened I am with my kids!" and then continues to make himself look prudish.
Then again, I guess many people will have the exact opposite reaction to me, when I share my views;).
Pfft... as if we had it that much better. The US had Bush and Switzerland, even through direct democracy, accepted the minaret initiative.
If you truly think we are THAT far away from the problems you cite, then I'd urge you to open your eyes. As long as the US has the 'choice' between republicans and democrats, they are replacing one dictator for another, too. Just that their dictator takes power through propaganda and not the military. Big effing deal.
Oh, by the way, since when does christianity allow freedom?
What we need to do, same as with Israel and Palestine and many others, is dump shitloads of weapons on them, let them duke it out fairly and then, when they finally have enough of killing each other, we could sit down and help them build something worthwhile.
You cannot bring peace and you cannot go and end wars. Only the people involved can do that. They need to want to, they need the guts to stand up and try and they need the staying power to see it through. It's social evolution, and we can't do it for them.
OR we could give them what they need: A shared enemy. But then again, I thought we weren't all that happy about terrorism.
Frankly, even if you did that, it wouldn't prove that someone was up there. I think that doubt will only go away once everybody has a realistic chance of going there themselves.
And frankly, I find your painting all skeptics with the broad nutter-brush to be very, VERY unscientific. There is doubt. And as long as there is doubt the true scientific approach would be to objectively look at the doubt, create a test to verify AND falsify the theory behind the doubt and go check.
I am willing to bet that 99% of the people calling the doubters nutters haven't done that. So, frankly, go fuck yourselves. You don't know any more about science than a conspiracy 'nut'. You're exactly at the opposite of that spectrum: You believe for the heck of it.
Why limit this to IT? The vast majority of workers can be trusted to do their jobs to the best of their knowledge. Only very few people actually try to do damage.
Of course, that percentage grows exponentially the more you abuse your people.
Some people are smart enough to realise (and have the restraint) that you don't need to be connected all the time; that it's actually healthier not to be.
Ooooh, I wish we had old fashioned barber shops in Switzerland. I had a straight razor shave when I visited Toronto and I just loved it.
I don't need haircuts. I wear my hair long and good Victorinox (Swiss Knives, you know them;D) scissors and a comb get the job done quite nicely (my wife and I cut each others hair).
But the shaving... that's truly relaxing... Again, I wish I had such a shop around the corner. I paid like 17 bucks in Toronto. I'd treat myself to that once a week if given the chance.
Boring? That would depend on one's opinion, don't you think?

WHICH nuclear power plants?
Seriously, people... there's more than one way to generate power from nuclear fission.
Would surely be interesting, wouldn't it?

Long answer: Hell no!
Since both the legal and moral systems are subjective, how the hell do you decide which trumps which?
If my ethics tell me that Jews are evil and to kill Jews means protecting innocent children, does that already trump legality?
So my question: Whose morality/ethics trumps the law always? Yours? Mine (boy, would this world be in for it...)? Hitler's?
You're walking on very thin rhetorical ice, my friend.
I don't give a damn about their soul, I just want it to point me to the information I am looking for.
we can expect google to get better, e.g. closer to what it used to be in the early days?
What makes you believe that the info the CIA shares in meetings neither you nor I are invited to is the very same you and I get to see from them?
...is this good or bad?

I think this is just another perfect example of just how full of himself AND how much of a crybaby Mr. Barr is.
Wooosh!
And why should you want to?
"Freeing somebody" does not work. Freedom implies, to a degree, independence. You can't be independent if someone else does the freeing for you.
So Linux is competing with hardware manufacturers now? Well, that explains a lot.
SCNR

Alas, I'm not one of them.
*stands up and applauds*

And how will you fill your pockets with your people's money if you've just crippled your whole infrastructure?
