Yes, this announcement is obviously aimed at preventing adoption of Linux on low-end hardware.
Sounds like to me, as a company that is in the OS industry producing an OS they can make money off of is good business. And if a competitor is hurt by this, thats more of the competitor's problem.
Business, not conspiracy.

If you read the law creating the EPA, you'll see that it provides them with the power to do what they do. They are given the authority to determine the standards and to enforce them.
"Yes. Yes it does. Dealing with the idiotic conflicts between states and federalism is the absolute worst thing. The feds refuse to step in issues where they should and refuse..."
I dont recall hearing about this case being sent to the supreme court. The supreme court can only rule on cases brought to it. They can't just step in.
I would partially agree with the AC. We can't forget to also help our country. There are many ways to do this, one being AmeriCorps, TeachForAmerica, etc. Volunteering at a soup kitchen, battered women's shelter, etc.
Helping out your community/country is just as important as helping out a third world country.
Polarizing the issue between helping 3rd world vs helping local society, is what part of your argument I would disagree with.
First of all, I'd like to compliment the courage of your friend.
But really, just send a real book. They are nice. You can keep a slip of paper on them, share them with others, and they are very easy to read.
Besides.. depending on where they are, electricity might not be always there. Batteries are just going to poop out.
One of the best things about being out there is removal from electronics and crazy things like that. A book will do nicely:D
IANAL (I am not a linguist) but I'd say it would make sense that people learn differently at different times in their life. Perhaps in the early stage of life, thre is not much information to base learning on, so it is simply absorbed and retained in a certain way.
On the other hand, later in life people can learn by methods since they have a ton of information to base their experiences on and also have had practice with different learning techniques.
Stop buying them?
"On the other hand, a BBC report from last July noted that pirated CD sales have hit a record high. Sounds like the RIAA should be going after the real pirates, not little Susie or Grandma."
Sounds like the RIAA needs to be in a different business...
I can't comment specifically on it, however the text interface and how you deal with text in gimp really needs to be worked on.
Moving and manipulating text on that thing is simply confusing and frustrating
I remember watching an interview with one of Bush's associates on Meet the Press. I think he was his economist.
I dont remmeber the exact number but it was A LOT. Billions. Several several Billions.
And the cost isnt just in dollars, it also creates a security dillema, and makes our reputation abroad just a little more brown colored.
Is this necessary? I don't think so, but then again I dont live in the Pentagon.

There's the Cisco packet game. The game that not only confused me about who it was being marketed toward. But also drove me nuts about its gig with Port au Prince and whatever the rest of the crap on it was. I'm no expert on Haiti, but I don't think stereotyping everyone living in Port au Prince as impoverished schmos who get their water from 5 hours away per day. The game's simply creepy.

This'll probably be lost in the great pool of lost replies, but here goes:
This one can be quite fun. Its a wooden stick which you try to catch a ball on top and on the sides.
One of my favorite skill/puzzle type toys. (Besides the get the ring of the horse shoes puzzles:D )

Thats hardly considered ok in my family, and we scorn at parents who do such things.
Please explain to me how this is a problem
Do you really want someone who is too lazy to go five miles and wait in a line 15-120 minutes picking the leader for 150 million people?
People's time is worth something and they are also volunteers. We want to keep those volunteers there.
From my experience, things generally work out of the box. Little manipulation is needed to get working sound, video, X, etc.
You ever use the Mac version of IE? Its had tabs since one of the OS 9's

This sounds like a good use for a google-style search. Possibly using Google's Desktop Search?

Simple, but not restricting. Allow me to pull out the complexity if i need to. However, dont bog me down with 100 steps. (

Or better yet, Bond. (Awesome music + a bit of James Bond theme) http://www.bondmusic.net/
If this were the case though, tech gadgets similar to Apple's Airtunes/Airport Express would be enviable. Imagine: "Apple AirShow."

Even more interesting is that i was able to read that fairly quickly
I guess it depends on your idea of what the "business that is slashdot" should be. Sure this isn't a BBC forum, but would you want it to be?
