He was comissioned for a fee to produce a work of art. He did the work and got paid, that's the end of it. It's been going on for a long time in the art world.
Now the company turns around, prints it on 500,000 pieces of paper stock and makes x amount of money, that's their right. That's what they comissioned the artwork for. I'm sure your friend signed a paper stating that he gives up certain rights to the work.
Now say they want him to do some more work, then he's in a negotiating position. He can deal for Cash and a percentage of the profit.
All in all, I would say your friend and WoTC each got what they were after in the deal, if he's complaining now, consider it a lesson learned.

my company usually spends a year or so before rolling out a new system. When win2k was released they spent time and money planning and testing for both server and desktop.
Just as the server installs started MS announced win2k's sunset date. we had just started our desktop rollouts, and had none in production, so everyone on the workstation project backed up and started on XP so we would have a longer life.
even so we've been running NTWS for 4-5 years and it may be another 6 months before the first production workstations are turned out. by then windows RG should be out

My favorite radio station is KNAC.com. No commercials that i've ever heard although a few popups when you hit the site. they have RA as well as WMP streams. Most of the tunes that they play I want to hear, and if you have a request that hasn't been played within the last few hours you can log on to the chat and request it from the dj.
If you were a kid living in the LA/Long Beach area during the 80's, KNAC was the station for metal. KROQ was good for most commercial AR but KNAC played everything. KNAC the station died as far as metal goes about 10 years ago but somebody picked up the torch with KNAC.com.
    It's definately not sucky.
