I actually tried this at sig a few days ago. It's interesting, but not as good as advertised. While it's fun, the feedback is slightly buggy, and chopping at the enemy occasionally would not register as a hit. The sword device uses a fast-rotating weight that must start up again every time you are "hit" by an enemy, which takes a few seconds and feels unnatural. Users would sometimes get tangled up in the wires and one user got so into it that the device flew off of his head.
As far as the graphics are concerned, we're back to VirtaFighter 1. If high poly high texture models are your thing, this wont interest you. But,the graphics didn't worry me as much as the animation. I counted about 5 different cycles of animation from the enemy, which include predicable routines of slicing vertically, horizontly, the spinning cyclone of um, death, and the backward leap. Your enemy is no samuri.:)
I also found it intesting that everyone who played won. It was that easy. I long for realistic, fun vr experiences, but this was hardly much of a step forward.
I really hope LucasArts can come out with some great new games, but all the great LucasArts developers are gone, and the company imo will never be what it used to be.
I also find it kind of sad that what used to be a totally in-house development company now has to hire out talent from other studios.
After waiting for the prequels for so many years, I've been saddened at how low the series has now sunk. Episode I & II were less then quality movies, as much as everyone (myself included) wanted them to be otherwise. I can't tell you how many times I had stood behind Episode I simply because it was Star Wars. The original trilogy was perfect, there is nothing that you look at in the film and say, "wouldn't it be way better if.." simply because everything was done so amazingly well. As I watched Episode I for the first time, I couldn't help but wince at certain material (exqueese me!).
Now I don't want to be too much of a critic but Episodes I and II could have been 10 times better movies with the right people. I look back at Empire and Jedi, and Lucas didn't direct and didn't write a good amount of the screenplay. We're all good and bad at certain things, and Lucas just isn't good at directing. True, he did direct Star Wars, but behind the scenes had a lot of input from individuals (most notably Sir Alec Guinness) on the proper way that it should be. The trouble now, is that everyone is a "yes man" to George Lucas.
As far as Spielberg is concerned, he is one of the best directors of all time. The way he establishes shots is incredible, and so much thought has been put into each shot. Lucas is an incredible visionary and buissnessman, but can't work with the incredible actors and scenes at his disposal. I think it could be a good decision to let someone else direct the last film, and Spielberg would be a very interesting choice. But Star Wars is Lucas's "baby," and he will guide it at his own discretion.
Why does that matter? The majority of users use Windows. Does every product mentioned on Slashdot need to be somehow related to an operating system that a fraction of the community uses? You would not post a story concerning a major breakthough in gpu technology simply because it wont be readily supported for linux? Absurd.
How about we in the US worry about adopting the metric measurement system first, and then we can worry about things like time. It's rediculous that we still use inches, feet, and yards.
Insulation is a bigger market than you may think. All I can say is that whoever does do it and does it successfully will be making a crap-load of $$$ (and of course greatly reduce fosill fuel use around the world:)
I don't know about the whole digital thing. I personally like the look of film, as it has a quality and look that we can relate to. The look of digital can be sometimes too crisp and too synthetic. But that's just me.
Do you really want to give any more control over the Internet to the government?
Maybe it's just me, but if I recall, it was the government who created the internet in the first place. It was us who took control of the internet away from the government.
Does this mean movies will have more swear words? Excellent!

On the flip side, what is one film that you would consider as the paradigm for computer generated effects?
I also find it kind of sad that what used to be a totally in-house development company now has to hire out talent from other studios.
Very small application, and not the most powerful thing in the world, but in 5 minutes you'll be modeling.

Out of all the useful things they could have developed for the blind, they come out with quake.
The silicon came first, chickens didn't evolve until millions of years later.
wait 'til PETA gets ahold of this one
does that mean that john katz will stop writing reviews?

Oh, I was thinking for a moment that it could have been important.
Since when is Moby anyone's favorite band?
uh, i think they're switching to linux to render the animation, not actually produce it. big difference
what a waste of your tuition. really.

I'll never trust a guy over 300 pounds.

Indium Phosphide Valley, anyone?
To charge your laptop, dumbass.
I wonder if you can scratch the drives :)
Seriously though, out of complete ignorance, does this work in a similer fashion to vinal record players?
