I, too, still live in North Dakota and have visited most of those places. Lewis and Clark is a huge thing up here and it's getting bigger with the bicentennial approaching. The school district where I work has put together a littlewebsite on Lewis & Clark.
The Map section has information on each of the major L&C locations in ND. It's pretty interesting, I'd suggest anyone interested in L&C take a look.
what practical use does a performance of The Nutcracker Suite (for instance) have?
To some people it's entertaining. Last time I checked entertainment was a pratical use. Look at games, movies, music. All for entertainment. They have a hell of a lot more use than the Linux Kernel being read off line by line.

Last time I checked(it's been a few months), Excite would not have advertisements on their site having to do with alcohol and tobacco but gladly had porn adverts on search results(those search results had something to do with porn). So how is what Google doing any different than Excite? Or TV for that matter. You rarely see alcohol ads and never tobacco ads anymore. But go on late night TV and you'll see ads for all sorts of Adult Phone Services and for different Adult Videos. Personally, I think Google is just following the mainstream.
You have a good point. I should have said that if you downloaded the distro and not bought the PowerPack, it wouldn't hurt to join MandrakeClub and donate a few dollars.

Mandrake is one of the best Linux distro's for new users and I feel it's a vital part in getting more people turned onto Linux. I was worried for a while that Mandrake might not exist a few years down the road but hopefully this turn toward profitability will continue. And remember, if you use Mandrake, it doesn't hurt to donate some money to them. It is, afterall, the season of giving.:-)

That would be a really cool project actually. I wonder if I can find a nonfunctioning TV/VCR (or cheap) to gut apart.
My local DSL provider is the telco co-operative, so I'm not too worried about ever losing service on phone or DSL. I guess I am one of the few lucky ones who have that luxury.

Signal repeaters and lots of them. Also if they license with the FCC they'll be able to use more powerful signals. Yes, I agree with you that WiFi might not be the way to go, but it will pave the way for future nationwide wireless internet. And as we know, any step forward, no matter how small or insignificant, is a step in the right direction.
This is so offtopic but I just had to say it. That link to wad of dough had to be the funniest thing I've seen all day. Thank you for the laugh my friend.
Yes, this is somewhat off-topic, but I feel it important. Photodex has more of a Windows Explorer feel to it, which is good to get more users to switch over. Konqueror looks scary to new users, atleast to some extent. With more and more user friendly tools for Linux, I think we can expect to see more and more users flock to it.
So techincally I could put these in the open 5 1/4" bays in my desktop? And have a self contained beowulf cluster? And enough heat to make the sun seem insignificant? w00t Where do I sign up???
You'd be a poor bastard then. ;-)
All because he didn't buy his brother a christmas gift, that cheap bastard. Though, I do believe a Slashdotting is a bit harsh.

Have sex/masturbate frequently. /.ers have the masturbate part down, so I don't think that's too much of a problem.

Also on that page it says "Customers who wear clothes also shop for:". I would hope all their customers wear clothes.
Just be thankful it's not a NASA failure.

It means that it's powered by one of those lovely wall-warts with a barrel plug on the end. More than likely, a lot like a laptop power supply.

And this guy got his PhD how? I mean come on a study of vampires and people in a town that a TV show takes place in. Hmm...
And I thought I was a bit off.
