Probably not the same as this, but I made a patch for "ping", whereby it beeped, and the beep changed pitch depending on the RTT. I wanted to make it echo like Sonar, but I couldn't find out how to do it with/dev/console - I don't think you can change the volume with that.
Anyway, I forgot I had it, and one day SSHd into my machine at work to test connectivity to somewhere. 15 minutes later I get a call: "Turn that fucking beeping off!".
I absolutely agree with this. I work for a company that has obvious interests with phones, and we managed to get a Linux Motorola phone a few years ago from our office and contacts in China. It worked, and everything, and looked great, but we had no way to get to the Linux insides, which meant that it was about as useful as a chocolate fire-guard.
Unlike some Siemens phones we had - it's very cool to be able to get a phone# prompt, and run all the usual commands.
This is ironic, as Russia has arguably some of the best computer security experts in the world. Those that know how to exploit the holes can also advise how to secure against threats. I wonder if it's due to talented Russians leaving the country to work abroad?
Listen, bug discoverers!! Don't let Microsoft know about bugs in their new IE7 - until it's released! Unless of course, that is, you actually want to help them out....
How long until people start trying to think up ways of using bank-notes to deliver deadly chemical or biological agents to the mass population? They've already discovered "radioactive banknotes in Kazakhstan".
After you hit the $1 billion mark, isn't it in your interest to do Pretty Much Whatever The Fuck You Want?
"Run company well" and/or "don't be evil" about but two choices on a very large menu.
What really freaks me out is people that try to type in Cyrillic, but without using Cyrillic characters. Let me try with the Russian word for Russia: POCCNR. How did I do?
Hmm! That domain name overflowed a buffer in Firefox, and now I have teams of Hungarian hackers fighting Russian hackers for control of my Linux box. Don't click it!!
Absolutely. I check long and hard before I buy some hardware that it is supported under Linux. If it's not, I don't buy it. Same with software. There is software, and some games that I would love to play, but I'm not reneging on my principles, giving in, and installing Windows. The software companies and games companies can come to me if they want my money. Same with hardware companies.
I was in Argentina recently, and any of their red wines (vino tinto) tasted better than the wines we get in the UK*. That doesn't mean that I can tell if one is oak-matured, or full-bodied, or has a fruity bouquet - but I can tell that Wine A tastes better, and has less of a nasty aftertaste than Wine B.
I brought back two bottles of San Felicien Cabernet Sauvignon - mmmm, that stuff is good. Hic.
* I don't spend a lot on wines here - I'm sure if you spend £50 or up, you can get decent wine here.
Hear, hear. But then which search engine would you use? I remember hearing about this amazing great new MS search engine a few months ago, but that hasn't been heard of since. And which free webmail service would you use?
Surely the actual ICU equipment isn't networked at all, and this just inconvenienced the admin and support staff in that dept?
5 minutes later:5 more minutes.

What can be better than cricket?!

Reason: Don't use so many caps. It's like YELLING.
In Soviet Russia, you exploit hackers!

Is it me, or does the BBC article not actually say anything about what will happen?
Why, out of interest did he want to kill only women? Was it a woman that planted the bomb that killed his family?

If it's worked for them so far, why change..?

Grrr, stupid date format, grumble, grumble. Why not use 2006-01-23? Here are all the reasons why you should.

I wonder who on Slashdot has the lowest publically accessible IP address.
Or even better, a brief, simple summary of browser and OS stats that have "hit" that story...
IE: 68, FF: 18, S: 9
Win: 73, Lin: 14, OSX: 12

Of course they do. I bet they even know how much they charge to sign a driver too....

No, it's your sly hinting that it's likely to be a box running Gentoo. What's that all about?
