  1. Re:$800?! on Lust After The Sony Clie NZ90 · · Score: 1

its definitly not on topic, but while I can tell you that maybe you didnt need the 250 glasses at LensCrafters, the drugstore glasses are by no stretch of the imagination good for your eyes, because of the generic PD (pupil distance). Most people get unwanted prism from looking through the wrong part of the lens, and that can cause eyestrain.

Anyway, LC has an interesting policy of taking discounts after the fact for up to 30 days... so if you have eye insurance that will reimburse you for expenese, buy the glasses retail from the store, submit the receipt showing you paid full price, and then go back with a AAA (yes, the auto club) card and get 30% off, or bring any other vision care card that they do or do not accept and you'll get at least 20% off...

and before you say I'm full of doggy poo, I worked there for 2 years and am an ABO certified optician...

and also very very bored at the moment... :)

In fact, down south they have a very large local calling area, which more than makes up for having to dial extra digits. I dont know about New Yorks call pricings, but who cares if you have to dial a "1" before every call now, as long as its not considered a toll call.

  8. Someone Tell Me... on S3's DeltaChrome Examined · · Score: 3, Interesting

Okay, as far as I see it the video card race works like this: nvidia or ATI releases high end card at 400 bucks or so, and 1-3 mid-low range cards. The competitor follows suit, prices fall about 15-20 bucks every month or so, until the "next card" comes out, then prices plummet, and it all starts over. Sometimes a 3rd party enters (like S3 right now) and offers what is basically crap comparted to whats out, doesnt offer THAT big a price difference, and goes away, If a company REALLY wanted to take the "crown", wouldnt it make sense to release a card as good or better, at a rediculous price point, but still make money? like a 9700 Pro equivalent at 2/3's the price or something? Give me the SAME specs and good driver support, and I dont CARE who makes my card. Note, I have no idea the production costs involved with these cards, this is just an observation... feel free to correct me...

  14. its a little small, aint it? on New Gameboy Announced · · Score: 5, Insightful

The GBA was a very nice size, it was comfortable to hold and all the buttons were easily accesible. Now, if I were 6, I wouldnt have a problem with a smaller design, but I am not 6, and my main reason for upgrading past the GBA is the backlight, but if I cant get to the shoulder buttons (judging from screenshots, no hard facts obviously) then its worthless. Smaller is not necessarily better if functionality is lost as a result.

Still, this IS nintendo we're talking about, and I've gotten used to all their controllers so far, so I guess we'll see. Of course, the controllers have kinda gotten bigger as I've gotten older, so that might be a reason why they are always comfy...

The backlit sure sounds nice, though. =)

  15. Pay Sites on A Viable System for Micropayments? · · Score: 5, Informative

I currently pay for the use of FilePlanets exclusive servers. They charge 6.95 a month (less than the cost of a movie, or 2 video game rentals) and you get access to 100+k/s downloads. You can, however, use their public servers and wait in line for free.

Gamespot also offers members only access, as well as free parts to their sites.

When sites offer stuff I am willing to pay for, I will pay for it. However, we're not charged (usually) for browsing at a brick and mortar store, so why should we be charged for browsing through a web page of the same content?

In other words, if you are offering a service online, and you feel that I need to pay to use that, by all means charge me something fair (anything over 2-3 dollars a month for simple browsing is rediculous), but remember, most people are only going to pay for a few sites a month if we're using a pay to browse system, and most will go looking for the same thing on a free site, and you lose a customer.

After all, gamespot and IGN offer basically the same stuff, yet everytime I go to IGN they want me to pay, and as a result, I do not browse there.

    Thats my rant, YMMV.
