Ok. This is a very interesting situation. I have been reading up on DirecTiVo "hacking" for some time now, and it seems as if your quandry falls right under the legal justification for what these sites are trying to do. According to them, their software/hacks/mods are for people in situations just like yours, and not those who are simply stealing satellite service (and therefore, would not want to connect the units to the phone. If its hooked to the phone then it has the ability to communicate two-way, if its not...then its just a one way connection) So, go to deal database and check out their forums. By downloading some linux images, and taking the drive out of your unit (voiding its warranty) flashing it with the downloaded image, you can disable the units ability to call out.
Or...just get a coupler, remember those, from the 1980's
You really screwed the pooch with this one.
First of all, your argument hinges upon microsoft not being aware that you had disconnected/changed your email address. They clearly took steps to inform you of the upcoming charges, which were ineffective partially because of your neglect. So therefore, your argument is invalid. My Xbox Live account just came up for renewal myself, but unlike you i planned in advance. By giving M$ a credit card number that i generated online with my banks propriatary software (MBNA Shopsafe). When the renewal charge tried to go through, it was unsuccessfull. I then recieved a nice letter in the mail from M$ alerting me to this. If you had only done something similar, or even more simply...alerted microsoft of your change in email address, you would have been better off. Your only chance is to call your bank and dispute the charges.
Here are some of the stats from their website www.1and1.com
500 MB web space
5,000 MB/month traffic ($.99 per GB for additional traffic)
No limits on simultaneous hits/bandwidth
5 FTP accounts
50 subdomains
50 POP3 e-mail accounts (50 MB each)
too bad their is a much better deal out there.
Go to www.1and1.com, they are affiliated with united internet and are offering three years of service for free, no fees whatsoever.
I am amazed at the services that they include with a signup, including a 25$ google adword gift certificate.
so dump the 2 dollar a month chicken dance, and switch to some freebies mon (they took out a double page ad in wired, so i dont think they are fly by night)
Does anyone have a good link for information about this? I mean it really casts me in the "ugly americain" light, but i had no idea that other countries were under siege either.
anyone that has to quote George Will should be taken out of circulation. Its bad enough that George Will exists, but to quote him....thats only helping to ensure that him and his ilk continue to be heard by the masses.
Go kill yourself soon, and save the rest of us from whatever dribble might come out of your mouth.
Your numbers are so close that i dont think you can easily pick a winner. Without having margin of error, or a total sample size how can we realisticly calculate whom is more likely to pay for your software.
Their are other factors to take into consideration as well. What is the target audience for your game? If you are advertising mostly on linux blogs or sites, then your going to have an audience that is more steeped in linux.
I think that the numbers show that on average 20% of your audience will pay for the game. This says only one thing to me, that your game is not very good. Instead of looking as to why linux users are approximatly 4% more willing to purchase the sofware; instead look at why 80% of your users wont. Solve that, and you have accomplished something.
I dont know about you guys, but that sounds an
awfully lot like the TACOMA DOME.
Sunday, Sunday, SUNDAY....free wifi access, first come first serve, SEE the mighty 54G crush all oncomers. Watch 802.11b, that scrappy kid, still hold up against the onslaught of oncomers. Witness the fall of the mighty BLUEtooth. Special appearance by Airport...EXTREME!
this sunday, at the TACOMA DOME...i mean NODE!
Right in my back yard.....video games are being blamed for a 12 year old attempting to "take over" his school, only to kill himself in the bathroom when the police were informed.
Pretty soon the games themselves will be banned, to hell with the backup equiptment.
Yeah i know its off topic...but appearantly it wasnt relevant enough to warrant my submission being accecpted
Read about it at

Methinks that someone thought this was a story.
It is not. Sorry.
It will be a story when the program is realeased and available.
Quit posting nonssence. Espically xbox related nonsence.
i worked for a company in horseheads, N.Y. called IST (www.istcorp.com) developing their new webpages. We got this lawsuit and were all astonished about its vagueness and absurdity. So astonished, in fact, that i sent a post in to slashdot asking to start a dialogue about this.
needless to say, being that the moderators of this board are soo friggin stuipd, they didnt deem it worthy.
needless to say, i did some investigation on my own.
The owner of these patents is one Lawrence Lockwood, who i tracked down and tried to call.
If you do some reasearch online, this guy had sued a few companies a few years ago, and appearantly won.
We got this lawsuit, and after seeing that all of the patents have to do with airline ticket distribution systems. We figured that what they were doing was "shotgunning" their lawsuit. By that I mean, they were planning on suing a lot of smaller companies who cant stand for themselves, and hoping that they would settle out of court. Well we didnt, we called their bluff. And appearantly that was the last we heard of them..
mewonders if they got more persistant?
Yawn!
see when i say yawn its because i allready did yawn and you didnt catch it.
I know that is how/. works. I dont expect to see articles that appeared weeks earlier however. Sure, if something that was in non-mainstream media months ago suddenly appears, then great. But i hardly think that something that was reported on close to a month prior to being on/. could be that pressing, or that relevant.
I dont know if im making my point here, but what im trying to say is, dont be redundant.
Its comforting to see that someone with a copy of this months wired can make headlines in/. Doesn't anyone check up on this anymore? I mean i know we all must read Wired, so who let this one slip by....
Nevermind the insighfull and informative articles i have submitted, lets run with a story from page 36 of this months Wired. "Darpa: Lost in the translation"
This site is really starting to suck. And not like suck.com , more like msn.com.
They claim that their are new ways to get students to purchase software, but they only speak of educational discounts and bundling.
these arent creative, or are they new. The college i went to was a haven of trading and warez. Even today, i pay for as little as i can, and rely on astalavista.box.sk to provide the rest.
As far as software being cheaper? has anyone here purchased xp? (i know naughty word, tsk tsk), or what about the new wolfenstein, or max payne. Games are still 50, apps are still around 100, and thats the way it will be for a long time to come.
I think that with the collapse of napster that trading and swapping has scattered so wide that its harder to accuratly measure its effect. Edonkey, kazaa, gnutella, direct connect, ftp, newsgroups....come on. you can find anything you want for free, and in less then 10 mins.
regardless of who is trading what where, the article is still inaccurate and i think a mindless piece of fluff that i used to call an "evergreen" when i wrote for student papers.

I just have one question
what is a Univeral garage door opener?
does it work with a univeral garage door?
Maybe the univeral corporation is bigger then I previously thought.

Learn to spell. Undeclared. Outside of that, you seriously need to recheck your sence of humor. You enjoyed Greg the Bunny, and not Futurama. -Lou

'Cause its not like im advocating that they skin babies alive, cause then i would say Noooo. No, you do not skin a baby alive!
