I don't think most open source is playing catch up with that third rate vendor you mention. Opensource software is of higher quality and for more compatable with everything.
A tiny amount of originality can go a huge way though. It can make the differance between a drone army of tens of thousands average to great programmers producing crap ( microsoft ) and a hundred or so below average to great coders producing quality stuff ( open source. )

What this world needs is a really big injection of orginal thought, not a rehash of every idea that gets old enough for most people to forget it the first time around.
Imagine a well founded group release their AI to solve the virus problem.
Imagine a second virus adapting to the first, learning its tricks, and spreading.
Imagine skynet spreading into every computer system on the internet, every computer system on company networks, and every computer system in defence networks.
Imagine the destruction when 3 billion people are wiped out overnight.
Image a race of machines taking over and developing the ultimate killing machine. The TX.
Hopefully this will help the scientists who are crossbreeding intelligent apes in order to try and create another advanced species and uderstand how humans have evolved.
I thought this research was scrapped some time ago when the best they could come up with was Darl MacBride.

It's not exactly groundbreaking stuff. I'll bet every third person has looked at a wheel mouse and wondered why they don't scroll left and right as well. I know I have.

I see the same thing on a smaller scale when things I write become political tools at work. It just makes me sick.
It would make the world a far sweeter place if just once the scumbags, the abusers, and the bullshit talking con men get punished badly for their actions.

I never said I could not use it. I just don't like it very much. Debian is great. The installer isn't.
Personally my favourate installer is OpenBSD, It's so clean and simple.
