  1. Re:Smash TV on Big Rigs Makes Play For Worst Game Of All Time · · Score: 1

I played either the Amiga or Atari ST versions. It was such a pointless game, just moving around in a small area and shooting constantly. There never seemed to be any challenge to it so it got boring within minutes.

    CowboyNeal spaketh:
It saddens me greatly to see the toy that was such a mainstay of my childhood to be in such dire financial straits.
That quote sums up a lot of the comments in this thread.

Now compare and contrast this attitude to another attitude often seen on Slashdot, the complete lack of sympathy for mass-market music publishers.

Lego is losing its market due, primarily, to two factors: (1) over-priced products, and (2) kids wanting different toys to play with.

Music publishers are losing their market due to piracy, especially on p2p networks owned by companies which directly profit from such piracy.

I'm generalising here, of course, but why does Slashdot deride the music industry for having its business ruined by pirates, but then feel sympathy for a company which has ruined its own business by being greedy and failing to move with the times?

  6. Re:Funny. on GTA Violence, the Media, and the Gamers · · Score: 1

I remember that comment. I only took it as a shorthand way of saying "someone who posted on Slashdot", which is of course similar to "gamer" meaning "someone who plays games". The difference is that I didn't think there was any inference of status or credibility, and that's where the difference lies. I think some, perhaps many people who describe themselves as "gamers" are doing so because they believe the word has gained some cache.

  7. Re:Two points on GTA Violence, the Media, and the Gamers · · Score: 1

Yeah I think that's how it started (I even used the word myself once upon a time) but nowadays it seems to be said with a degree of pride. I can almost imagine someone saying they're a gamer while at the same time putting their fist on their heart and humming the national anthem.

People who describe themselves as "gamers" should remember that they're talking about a hobby which involves nothing more than picking up a controller and moving something around on a screen. It's hardly something to respect or admire. It's not even really a skill. At best it's a learned ability that some people can pick up more easily than others.

  8. Two points on GTA Violence, the Media, and the Gamers · · Score: 2, Interesting

    1. It seems to me that the "violent games" issue, like most cultural issues, is being debated by two sides whose primary argument is "the other side is wrong". Even when one side presents some form of evidence to support their standpoint, the other side tries (not necessarily successfully) to discredit that evidence, and pretty soon we're back to the whole point/counter-point argument. The two sides both need to find some undisputed facts and grab onto them like a bulldog. Whoever has the best facts... wins! It's a whacky concept, I know, but it usually works.

    2. Am I the only PERSON WHO PLAYS VIDEO GAMES who is sick of hearing the word "gamer"? If someone plays sports then they're a sportsman/woman and that has a certain credibility. If they drive racing cars then they're a racecar driver and that has credibility. When I hear SOMEONE WHO PLAYS VIDEO GAMES describe him/herself as a "gamer" it sounds to me like they're trying to wrap their fun hobby in a veil of credibility, as if it has social merit or importance. It doesn't. You play games because they amuse you. Chances are you only play games when you have nothing else better to do. Please stop trying to create some sort of respectable social niche to put yourself into.

  9. Re:Nikon D2H on Bluetooth Digital Cameras? · · Score: 1

It's my understanding that the pictures first go into the camera's memory buffer and are then written to the card or microdrive. Then during times of camera inactivity the pictures on the card/drive are transmitted wirelessly before being removed from the card/drive. There shouldn't be any bottleneck under normal conditions, and the un-normal conditions would be pushing the camera too hard anyway so you wouldn't be able to get the pictures in the first place.

  10. Nikon D2H on Bluetooth Digital Cameras? · · Score: 4, Interesting

While not exactly the solution you're looking for because it isn't bluetooth, the Nikon D2H is Nikon's new flagship digital SLR for sports and photojournalism. It can transmit files by 802.11b. The camera itself doesn't have the feature as standard, you need to buy an attachment.

You're looking at $5,000 for the whole kit plus lenses, etc. Definitely not an amateur solution but it is an attractive feature, especially if you're into sports shooting, and even moreso if you get a kick out of the idea that your pictures are automatically being transmitted to your laptop while you're still taking the next ones!

But then, geeky toys aside, your lovely new camera would say Nikon on it and that would be a shame.

    Couldn't resist! ;-)

If you're on any sort of budget then personally I think a $25 firewire card reader is a better/cheaper idea. You can take around 400 high quality JPEGs on a 1Gb card/microdrive, copy them to your computer in a few minutes, then start shooting again. Still, if you're loaded then I guess wireless is the way to go.

Note that the Canon 1D replacement is due within a few months and it would be surprising if that didn't have wireless capabilities, either as standard or with an attachment. Price should be around the same as the Nikon D2H, maybe a little higher, but the features should leave the D2H eating dust.

  15. Re:Spirit vs Beagle on Spirit Rover Lands Successfully · · Score: 2, Insightful

One quick follow-up to my own comment...

To say that the Beagle team has "thrown away" an opportunity was too dismissive and I wish I'd phrased it more tactfully. Those people have dedicated years of their lives to achieving something and, unfortunately, didn't succeed on this occasion. They will, of course, have learned a lot along the way.

I, on the other hand, have done precisely nothing to further science, so I shouldn't be so quick to judge.

  16. Spirit vs Beagle on Spirit Rover Lands Successfully · · Score: 4, Interesting

Like many non-US citizens I get sick of Americans thinking that their country is the best and that other countries are less important. But look at what has happened yet again: Where another country failed, the US has succeeded.

When I hear that the US has successfully landed a craft on Mars, I don't feel particularly surprised. I'd have been more surprised if the mission had failed. But when the Beagle mission (apparently) failed, my reaction was neutral, almost as if I had *expected* it to fail, and a large part of that was due to it being a non-US mission.

I guess my point is this: If you're one of the people, like me, who is sick of Americans thinking that their country is "all that", then this success should be another reminder that as far as the advancement of science and discovery is concerned, their pride may be less patriotic arrogance and more a statement of fact.

Oh and I'm not ass-kissing Americans, I'm just feeling a little angry that another country has thrown away another opportunity of doing something important, only for the US to step in and show us how it's done.

If you want to be the best then actually being the best might be a good place to start. This fundamentally competitive attitude is something that Americans seem to inherently understand and embrace, whereas in other countries it is often frowned upon as distasteful.

    This is an excellent ruling.

Maybe people think the guy's "sad" or whatever for caring so much about his virtual property, but that is irrelevant in a court case.

I sincerely hope this case will send a message to other games companies that they cannot treat their customers in this way and then hide behind an EULA, not answer telephones, ignore e-mails, etc.

If a company's business is allowing people to play an online game then they have a responsibility (and, it seems now, a legal duty) to conduct that game in a fair and honest manner. It appears that on this occasion, the company's attitude was "it's just a game, go away" and the court has told them that attitude is unacceptable.

    Absolutely the right decision.
