That's right folks, traveling into the black hole means you will undoubtedly be used a fuel to warm the bodies of some lovely 3 breasted alien hotties.
(Yeah, my theories have no basis in this world...)
Early only we ran into some policy issues at the university.
The solution...
Take the engineering department off of the campus network and maintain it ourselves.
It worked out fairly well when I was there, but resulted in some equipment deficiencies. We ended up getting the backend of the upgrade cycle, but that was fine as we were allowed to "blow them up."
This would not have worked without volunteer work and when I had returned I was already a competent admin. It probably wouldn't scale too well, but it's a good learning experience for some.
It does lead to issues though...
At one point, a professor proclaims the network seems to be having issues and at that point I poked my head up.
"Um, no it's not... I'm putting in dDNS... because it looked like fun."
Things were back up momentarily. (Hey I was young!)
The best was probably the day I rooted the servers and updated the motd.
"Under new management -- cylix"
This was of course the policy for gaining administration for maintaining systems. The final system I had to social engineer my way into... sorta... I basically made it into the server room with the prof maintaining things and he left to go get some papers. He knew I was after the final system and just wouldn't let me take it over without a fight. He had to know what I was going to do and probably just wanted to see how fast I could get my hands into the system. The moment he stepped out I tackled the keyboard like it was a drunken cheerleader.
The only catch was no denial of service. So, if you were going to bring something down... no one could notice.
Nagios functionality can be easily extended with a custom check script that would interact with all or some of an applications web app functions of that host.
It would be a matter of parsing the return material and simply passing a check var.
Yeah, not an extremely involved, but I merely posed it as a 'well, yeah, it kinda can idea.' Some of the other features I noticed (ie, monitoring, get/post, bytes) could be implemented as well with some minor reporting.
With that said, all of these discussions have certainly opened my eyes to a variety of software packages and techniques.
They can have issues. Resources can get chewed up and bits lost.
Though I've not had a USB sound card. I do have to wonder about bandwidth allocation and other system issues that can interrupt audio. Basically speaking, there are a wealth of issues that can go wrong and input a chirp.Sure, it doesn't have to happen all of the time, but once is just enough to ruin a field recording.
I suppose I'm just a sucker for special purpose devices myself.
Hell, I'm so paranoid I run two decks just for the clean footage in mobile setups. It has saved my ass in post far too many times.
Then there are some of us who browse with Funny=+5.
I enjoy comedy, it's a great thing and it is a bit annoying that no one can earn any points from it.
However, you can meta-moderate me all day and even mod me down. The youngsters might worry about karma, but I've got a bit built up and it won't take long to replenish it.
Why do people do the things they wouldn't normally do?
Marketing!
That's right folks, we are poised to market linux to any and every one of those poor fools who couldn't even use a toaster.
It's the next big thing!
Or perhaps there has been enough stink about it to get them to at least sale the idea. I'm sure it won't cost that much and it will probably push a few more units.
Hell, even I would have liked this last year when I purchased several new systems. Given how goofed up the process is on some of the top end stuff it would just be kinda nice to have them out the door and pre-installed. Especially when performing a build out on a project and the last thing you want to do is worry about your servers installation needs.
For nagios, I setup nagiosql at least I believe that was the name of the project.
I don't believe it's under development anymore, but a little tweaking on the sql side and it was working fine for me.
After that, it's pretty much a breeze to configure and add servers. Once I wrote a custom script (many were provided) it could be applied to any box.
The only drawback is all configuration files are kept in sql and regenerated. However, if you are using it to edit your configs... chances are you may not want to tweak the config file by hand much.
Yes,
I'm about to patent a new twist on the jump concept.
It will perform a compare and can jump based on success or failure of the previous compare operation!
Egads man, I'll be rich once programmers catch on to my new and improved version of jump!
In the spirit of a new fad...
Where is your digg now?
He's right about the blue ones...
I tossed those into the garage and external hallway.
It's a pain and we go around and around every time this stuff comes up. CFLs are not equal and you have to shop around to find the right ones.
In any event, I rather like my mercury laden bulbs. They are mercoliscious.
Hell the one I went to was a computer with a web browser.
It's nice for the chicken and egg issue for first time buyers, but I went there hoping to find a pre-built system for work. (we needed a quickly).
I was so annoyed and the kiosk guy completely mislead me on the phone.
The opposite of a black hole...
A sun!

Fun times!
I'm informed that he is one of the original shock jockies.
It's his job to say things that get people pissed off.
At least, that is what I was told by a friend in the music/dj business.
So, as far as feeding material... they probably should have had plenty to work with.
He'll probably wind up on XM anyway with a brand new show.
Let's get together and burn some books!
I say this, as someone who doesn't exactly like wikipedia.
Depending on the web app...
/. article I've read in a while.

Have you actually tried to use their servers?
.tw version.
They are so unbelievably slow and unresponsive you have to use the
I don't remember always having those problems, but in the last few years it seems they have not grown to meet the demand.
I think this should guarantee safety for more then a few of us who gave up going back there.
Surely you jest!?!
But if you read the posts...
He responds that he just stick it in there and planned on rewriting it.
I'm not sure exactly how that can be not interpreted differently.
Theo goes off damage control in response.
In any event, if you don't want to lose face... don't do things that will cause such respect to be lost.
It seems so simple it's almost complex!
The problem with PC audio devices...
They can have issues. Resources can get chewed up and bits lost.

I have a reason to actually play second life.
No, I won't be gambling per say....
In any event, I would like to announce my new "hang out" which has been themed after the movie "Casino Royale."
Why yes, yes we do have hookers and black jack.

In America, we are just hoping to get a piece of the fraud pie!
We have dreams too... they are just different then everyone else.
I call BS...
I played a few MMO's, still play eve and what have you.
The worst is when I started playing WoW, fell in with chinese guys, started grinding and just massing large amounts of gold.
I hit rock bottom... nothing but grinding and gold collecting for weeks.
Now, I'm grinding away with this damned employment.
Just grinding and collecting cash.
Damn video games... I could have been a hippy!
When you pry if from my cold dead hands!

Yes, kill all humans...

The days just are not the same as the "dolphin safe tuna" days.
At least now a days, they have the decency to lie about dolphin being in your tuna...
Yeah he started this little company a while ago.
Not really sure what happened with it.
Apparently, it's a big fuss in some circles... go figure.
Actually,
There have been about a half dozen incarnations of the original work floating around ytmnd.com
http://conandefeat.ytmnd.com/
This is merely one longer modification of an existing idea.
In fact, if you search future conan you will find many variants and even some interesting ones with Snape.
So yeah, not so original, but I'm sure there are plenty who will interpret it as suhc.
