I've know companies who will hire someone on as a contract employee for six months and if they are any good then they will switch them to full time.

I don't think anyone is going to argue an electronic system is completely secure. When push comes to shove, I somehow doubt this would be used in a court of law.

However, I had a friend in college, one of his projects was to put an electronic lock on a fire arm.

So, he mounted an emebedded system into the stock and a simple motor controlled pin to disable the firing mechanism.

The control mechanism used a simple ibutton for identification and would have several options for how long it would stay unlocked.

So during the question/answer stage (performance and knowledge is part of the exam) I really grilled him on security.

Ultimately, he did the best job he could do to ensure security wouldn't be over written, but his final statement is one that is true for any piece of hardware. Once the weapon is in the hands of someone else... there is little anyone can do to stop those electronic measures from being over taken.

    I never thought of that...

I was held up in a hotel. My room had an ethernet port, but the IP address I did get was 192.xxx

So of course I tried pinging the gateway and nothing. I called down stairs and talked to the lady at the desk. They said they were having problems and access wasn't available. At that point, I offered to come down stairs and fix their network (I was flown in to meet with some management peeps within our corporate structure...at the time I was with a major ISP not AOL).

The lady at the desk finally says, their leased line was down and had been down for a while... (apparently there was some reason their back bone had been pulled, but alas she would not tell me).

So, my dial-up account was still local from my old purchased company (integration had not happened yet). Far away from home and knowing the hassle it would cause to get online with my company... I decided to pay for access.

At the time, I had Windows 95 on my crap company laptop and there was a little AOL icon. So, I thought, what the heck I'll make it a learning experience and see what the competition is about.

I managed to sign up with a credit card, without talking to anyone through just the basic software on my box. (included in 95 or was it 98?)

I was a little annoyed that I had this AOL window running just to stay on, but damn I was worried after using it. It was just so easy (though later on it was required to have a call back to activate)

In any event, it took 3 hours to cancel my account after I was finished with it. Finally, when they did ask me why I was leaving, I told them I work for a competing provider and they didn't put up any fuss.

If you ever wonder why people do subscribe with aol... just remember that story.

Glycol is neat, but it isn't without problems.

I was talking to an engineer who retired from PAX, but now does solely contract work.

Anyhow, apparently there is a problem they found out with glycol. It coats the metal surface and of course transmitters produce lots of heat. So after a period of time this glycol coat solidifies. It becomes an insulator.

I guess not so long ago, they finally started diagnosing OLD dead transmitter tubes. It is expected to burn out at some point in its lifetime and normally a diagnostic hasn't been done.

Though there isn't a replacement yet for glycol as the tubes and compoenents were designed with its characteristics in mind.
