If this were Joe nobody, they would come and take the relevant hardware from him. If this were Small Business Nobody... they would still take their equipment away from them.
However, because they are mega-huge corp... they ask for the information.
It's silly to think they are going to make it easy to screw themselves.
Digicipher II seems to be the more popular one right now.
Unlike DirecTV's DSS... I don't believe anyone has defeated it.
Most likely, it's an existing installation, there are lots of people doing HD over satellite right now. It's probably as simple as plugging into one of the video out ports on the decoder.
It's too much trouble... I'll just goto the theatre.
Here at work, it immediately went to the file server for distribution out to the network. Not all of the systems have been updated (4 as of now), but there are more installs planned.
They really should have a registration version which will send back registration information. Even if it simply updates a counter. I wouldn't mind contributing even that little information.
It's on the windows side of things, but it does a good job. Time shifting, on screen display, web interface.... There were previous discussions before on this topic on slashdot.
I haven't seen MS's stuff though... so I have no idea how it stacks up.
As soon as I get my mini-itx rig going I'll be using MythTV though. (I have to order some parts and cannibalize a dead laptop!)
HD might be where we are headed.... eventually... the sad truth of the matter is this is a long time off. We don't have the infrastructure, the viewers don't have the sets and the standard bodies keep changing their minds. They want to make revisions to the ATSC standard already!
We have several years to develope a new format and by the time HD does become mainstream we will most likely have a new format anyway.
Me, I'm not going to worry for a long time to come. I'm certainly not going to be one of the poor bastards who buys the first whatever-version-1.0 is.
I just bought a new DVD multi-everything burner and I'm quite content with it.
You wouldn't believe how many businesses value profit over anything else. I had a friend at Amazon, back before the amazon stores, and they really seemed to have a hard on for eBay.
No product to ship and nothing to manage other then funds and website maintenance.
Next up on the list...
Dell... they don't make the parts... they just toss em together and answer the phones.
Who cares if they don't have "anything" as long as they make a profit.
I work in the broadcast television industry now. It's a bit different then systems administration at an ISP.
Getting beta decks is getting tougher and tougher. It's still highly used in the distribution industry as well.
There is a analogue/digital hybrid deck that is new and I believe around 5000. There are a surprising number of shops that specialize in rebuilding, parts and supplying rebuilt decks. 3/4 has mostly been phased out and I've seen piles of 3/4 decks piled up anytime I go to a broadcast shop. We even have a small pile of 12 or so decks sitting.
Distribution is starting to take a technological leap as well. DGsystems has a very nice linux (slackware) setup that uses a DVB satelite card and modem uplink (transport verification). It's a solid system built on very humble parts.
A newcomer, fast channel, has an all windows setup that uses a broadband connection for pushing down content.
Finally, my other distribution box is made by pathfire which is a bit of a hybrid in the sense its a windows system with a large chunk of open source software. Apache, tomcat, mysql, Cygwin(the unix api dll... I think I got the name right), and various other apps with a strong set of java tools and GUI controls. Pathfire also uses satelite transmission and can use modem uplink or broadband for verification. They did include all the license information for each product too.
It's interesting to see all of these products come around, but sadly maybe only 10% of our distibution is through these electronic systems.
Robby seems to think these claims are a bit outrageous.
Just think of how much work would be involved in something like this. Maybe it's a compiler and their own widget set. Emulate APIs? Not quite an emulator really. Perhaps its a java emulator? Who knows what twist is really there, but we know from past experience this is tricky stuff.
Boisterous claims are often given by boisterous men... neither of which have any solid value.
It's odd that when someone puts some marketing spin on the practice... it actually gets noticed.
I deal with several software packages designed for POS and accounting. They each have a time out period and a new code must be entered to keep it running.
It's a support + software functionality rolled into one. I don't like it, but the implementations already there.
I am currently writing my own point of sale/accounting software package for video store rentals. I'm not sure if we plan to GPL the project and charge for support later on.
Currently, it's an in house project with the possibility of public release. Right now, our aim are just to get it working.
its very nature demands employees who have low ethical and moral standards.
This sounds a lot like sales and marketing....
On the darker side...
I had a debt collector come after me once. It started with a horrid cell phone company who was all analogue. Note, these people were really sneaky too, they advertised a really low rate, but they sent two bills a month. So yeah, their price really is half that of the competition. SORTA
Anyhow, I waited quietly til my contract was up and then I did not renew. I sent my last payment.
Fast forward a year and half. (Maybe more... I can't remember how long).
I get a call from a debt collector. Apparently, I didn't make a payment. I asked why this went straight to a debt collector and why didn't the company contact me prior regarding the debt.
That had been so long ago, I didn't have any personal records left indiciated I sent them a check. I also know what kind of nightmare its like dealing with the bank.
It was kinda funny, he had received my number from my mother. All his information on me was so old he couldn't threaten me in any manner. At the time, I was in financial splendor and I really didn't like that company.
So when he threatened my credit, I laughed and told him it might get rid of some of the people sending me credit cards by the tons.
It was only like a 100$ or so... but I really didn't owe it.
Not to Firefox troll, but I think everyone should make an effort to switch at least one person over to firefox. Then, see if they can switch at least one person.
I was happy using Mozilla, but since I switched to Firefox... I've been thrilled.
It flies, it has some nice plugins (I recommend FTPsync and Browser Agent switching for those annoying sites) and my experience has been nothing but great.
Just because I occassionally switch my user agent string doesn't mean I don't complain. I recently submitted a complaint to yahooligans (A yahoo kids oreiented site).
Yeah,
This was just plain bad.
Maybe it was supposed to be a big joke.
I think everyone is sitting around scratching their heads on this one.
I'm hoping episode two can really turn things around. Hoping...
Yeah,
No way did my ZM install take 4 hours. I also ran into a small problem, but it ended up being missing libjpg.
If your needs are very relaxed like mine, you can easily get by with a lot of the default configs.
Whhaaaaa?
You have to be kidding me. Automate the process... modify the system to time out or hell... create a dmz version with less thrills.
There are lots of clever things to do in regards to something that is horrendous amounts of flux.
Really, "This could all be solved by".... better admins.

That Mount St. Helens... she's so hot right now.

As long as their other works are doing well... there isn't much of a need to make money off of it directly.
Call it value added google content. It attracts more users and can add that extra content niche they need to attract more users.
Given the way it gets its feeds... its only a engineering support cost.
Indeed.
Here at work, it immediately went to the file server for distribution out to the network. Not all of the systems have been updated (4 as of now), but there are more installs planned.

They also forgot about my favorite SnapStream

Everyone who comes on to campus will be forced to enter the building as tickets will come bundled with their text books.
The new penguin building is expected shortly after the MS building.
Everyone knows OpenBeer is way better then FreeBeer.

Don't forget Cisco certified standard equipment cables....
It's a standard power cable with a notch cut above it.
I think we can easily pull together a dozen or so more odd things cisco does to rape their customers.
Soon we can say, No one ever got fired for buying Cisco!

You will never catch me saying, "Mine is smaller then yours."
Back some time ago... I knew of a horrid little web based email proggy.
It was of course, dmail's web front end and then there was of course dmail's own mailer.
I wasn't much of a fan of either application.
In any event, the point is, someone already has that name. It is entirely possible the company is now defunct or sold and then molested into oblivion.
I wonder if it is the same company?
So many questions and so little names...
Well yes actually...
I've got a nice i875p chipset here. It detects all of the usb devices at boot. I can even select the USB storage device as a boot device.
Neat huh...
Though real men use BOOTP and don't even touch that dirty media stuff.
This isn't new.... not by a long shot.

Um, there are laws forbidding collection agencies to hide their identity.
That's what I thought too...
I thought why?
There are some many better things now.
Let it stay dead man... just die a noble death.
