Two letters: GE
Their idea of compensation is 90 days and if they are early they knock down the price 1%-2%.
I would suggest that it is harder to take a beloved book and turning into a good movie, than making a movie from scratch. People have expectations and will want 'all' of the book in the movie. Or will diagree on how the characters look, and parts the were skimmed over, etc etc etc. You set yourself up for a lot more critics, doing a book than making up a new one. Of course when done correcty the rewards are greater.
>(Oh, here's a choice bit: I think it is acceptable to do what MySQL AB [..] do[es]: release under the GPL, but sell alternative licenses permitting proprietary extensions to their code)
To which RMS would say that is ethically and morally wrong.
>the purpose of copyright and patent is solely to have people WRITE STUFF DOWN
I would disagree, it to compensate people for their ideas.
If develop a 1W lightbulb, I would patent it so I could sell the lightbulb without others ripping me off and selling cheaper. I could then recoup some of my invention costs.

I am no license guru, what part of the GPL license did SCO violate?
>Charter cable starts at $29.99 a month, but mail and web server ports are blocked.
Huh? I have charter cable and run a website off my cable modem with no problems. Now I wouldn't want to run an important website on it, but works great for personal use.
You can't use what you don't know.
So what about people who never wear head phones, nor have any desire to?
I think I never wear them because I don't like not knowing what's going on around me.

Oh, I have plenty of moral objections to paying taxes.
But I also have plenty of objections to becoming Big Bubba's girlfriend.
Someone at CA is worried about ethics?
Woohoo, that's a good one.
I think most people would be off if they did microwave their credit cards! :-)
But shears work nicely also.

about 3/4 the way down.

You are failing to understand why GNU was created.
You selling software is morally wrong, according to RMS.
Let me repeat. Morally wrong.

Why this doesn't apply to books, music, or any other IP i have no idea, go ask him.
The GPL has never been "proven" in court.
Eventually, there will have to be a showdown.
This is not the time, SCO could ignore this with no problem. Fyodor, I doubt would sue. And if he did he legal fees could be sky-high.
FSF wouldn't want to back fear of draining their resources.
While the FSF thinks GPL is rock solid, others do not, and eventually a company will not be willing to settle out of court.
And the real fight will begin.

Am I know physicist, but how does 'slingshotting' help a object gain speed?
Wouldn't it just change the direction not the speed of the object?
I think I should be quoting vectors, velocity, and some energy law but I think you understand the question.
Never heard of it.
;)
It is related to GIMP or some other project.
Or am I actually going to have to get off my duff and start googling?
Does GIMP have command line options to manipulate photos?
I.E. are there command line options to make pics 100x200, or add a shade of blue, make a thumbnail, stuff like that?
I live in Tennessee maybe that's the difference.
According to Michael Moore's logic there is no such thing as cause and effect.

People complain about tech support, but aren't willing to pay for it.
The company I work for has excellent, and I mean excellent, tech support.
But it thousands of dollars per year.
How good tech support do you expect, when you buy a $399 computer or a $29 software package.

Whew, glad you put that there or I would have thought you were serious!
Please clarify OSS.
You talking GNU, BSD, MIT, etc all lumped together? Or something else.
I understand your concerns. I think they are reasonable.
They are talking about fibre to the house correct?
Would it not be easier for the isp to pin point flooder and cut them off? This would be much easier with this setup than with cable modems setup?
People would learn real quick to fix their stuff if it meant no connection.

This talks about how a cone shaped container reverses the Brazil Nut Effect.
Sorry, I have had no luck either.
And I can't find an archive of her columns.
If you have some science/math teachers make sure to tell them about the belt around the earth question.
Let me know if you are not familiar with it.
