there is a big difference between a server, and a cluster. hardly any normal mini-computer/servers are on that list. when you look at an 8 cpu box (or more), with dual cores per cpu, that does a bunch of business logic and database work you are not talking about some cluster in the top 500. you are talking about a box with hardware fault tolerance, that lets you hotswap hard drives and cpus, that lets a cpu fail, that lets ram fail, and not take down the whole machine's usefullness.
not all problems are solved by a 4000 node linux cluster with white box dells (actually, they're probably black, but anyways.)
the enterprise has a definite use for these expensive pieces of big iron that come out of ibm/sun. linux just can't fill that need yet. maybe someday it will.

i know, i was just... um, i dunno, showing continuity. i did like your screenshot though, but the attempt at making a desktop all look uniform is freaking tough if not impossible. too many non-conforming apps and too many widget sets. such as, in windows msn (new version of messenger) just seems to look blue, i may be wrong, but i don't think that is very adjustable. anyways...
How come there aren't any real apps up? How come you aren't doing anything useful in that screenshot? In a perfect world Windows could be skinned, and all the apps would conform to your new specification of how widgets look, what font's are used, what colors you want, etc. But that is definitely not the case with Windows, I've tried and given up. In the end it's not even close to worth the hassle.
Though Linux isn't much better. Start throwing in Motif apps, KDE/QT apps, Gnome/GTK apps, base X apps and it also stops conforming to your wishes. Though the control is available in an X environment to tune most of this it generally isn't worth it, and certainly is out of the realm of knowledge of your typical Linux/Unix "user." Though in *nix it is possible to set up a minimal and attractive (like your screenshot) environment, and just use a few transparent terminal windows to keep the environment clean and beautiful. Have a look at thisCuddletech screenshot for an example.

WTF!?!? What is with everyone. AMD is a company, and given the need, which I'm sure is already there, they would increase production capabilities. It's not like they feel the need to remain completely stagnant in production, and just maintain the levels they are at now. You people are just pissing me off when you say that AMD could never produce the chip load that Apple needs. Hell, as others have said, Apple is hardly a blip on AMD's radar. They are going to have to increase production with or without Apple. Their Opteron chips rule, their Athlon64 stuff is amazingly good on the desktop, and their temperatures are low enough to be great in both desktops and laptops. (Despite what all the Pentium Mobile nerds might think, AMD does have a good laptop roadmap.)

The fact of the matter is that Darwin boots on BIOS, and current hardware uses OpenFirmware. x86 people want BIOS so they can give OS X a whirl without buying Apples hardware, because they have the belief that Apple doesn't magically produce better hardware like everyone else thinks. And Apple fans want OpenFirmware because it's a more elegant solution (and what they're used to), and they would rather be able to keep their elitist status of being the only ones that are able to run OS X.

It's not as simple as 'just stop'. I have tried using Windows as a desktop environment in non-admin mode, and it's just not worth the hassle at all. And it's not as simple as just being able to stop using software. Having to be a different user to play a game is just lame.
And it's not a matter of crappy software, it's just that the previous way to write software for windows is so engrained into the developer base that it is close to impossible to change. The multi user aspect of Windows and the files for each user is even hidden from users. When you go to My Documents and the hit the up arrow, you go to either the Desktop or My Computer. When in reality you should be going to the so called HOME directory of SYSROOT/Documents and Settings/USER. So even in something like that it has a bad interface that leads to confusion. To actually see the Documents and Settings location that is your own directory for storing files, you would probably use Explorer. Now I would like to see the code that allows Explorer to do two different things like that at one time, seems like a lame arse hack to me. Though it is possible they have a neat path followed system, that initializes and recognizes when My Documents is clicked on from the Desktop or the Start Menu.
I would even argue(Point 1.): that with software patent violations, it is because the violation of the patent results from the fact that the solution is easily obtained by those in the business. Patents are supposed to allow for things that are non-obvious to be monopolized. With a lot of software it is obvious. That is why Computer Science takes all this math, datastructures, etc, so we can think enough to solve a problem. Patents get in the way of solving our problems.
On the contrary, it is important. I've just recently tried Solaris 10 on a Sparc. It's an Ultra 60, and the mouse on that thing sucks! But I like the OS enough to try it in the future on an AMD 64. Solaris has plenty of things going for it. I don't know about x86, or x86-64 but for some reason gdb on my Sparc sucks (though i am running pre-release Solaris 10.)

i think a response to someone's sig deserves more than a one liner. besides, who is to say that people that own guns (i'm assuming that is what you are bitching about) are not well regulated. most gun owners fire their weapons regularly, keep them clean, and are quite familiar with the responsibilities that go along with their freedom. it is very much in the security of a free state that people own guns and are ready at a moments notice, to do that which is right for their country. if you disagree, i'd like you to meet alot of people, that i know, that are very responsible citizens that own and bear arms.

I would like to chip in on this conversation, as I have RP, as does my father, two of my sisters, and my grandmother (mother of my dad). This disease does indeed have early symptoms, primarily of impaired night vision. Since this has been in our family, we have known about it early and therefore we are very interested as such things as the electron possibility. But these tests have so far had limited results. There is also another solution which helps a little, and that is daily taking Vitamin A Palmitate, at a dosage level of 15,000 IU. Taking this fairly high dosage, the affects of RP have been known to have 20% less impact per year.
These solutions do not truly fix the problem, but hopefully over time a solution will be found. Retinitis Pigmentosa has serious effects, it is quite scary seeing your family members go blind, and knowing you will too.
But this is the new Dell/Windows universe where such things are not necessary since Wintel solutions always work perfectly, and the habits of old Unix administrators are just not necessary, so shave that beard, and sit down.
