    Hmph. Been there, done that, didn't get a T-shirt, either. Young? No. Be forty pretty soon...and I find that the older I get, the angrier I get. Might be part and parcel of knowing more about the world :)

    Now, back in the early 80s, during college, when I *was* young, idealistic, and really wanted to go live on an asteroid; well. Nowadays I'm halfway burnt out from working too many overtime hours and wondering when the layoff notice comes; and watching the planet go to hell (with more knowledge vs. idealism than I used to have). Ah, well. Life happens.

    I'd still love to be somewhere using the skills I've learned to do something useful rather than just contributing to the corporate onslaught, however. I suspect I'd be just as busy, if not more so, but I think there' d be less reason to watch the News From Earth :-)

    "Take it all in stride": What are you, a quitter? Guess that's your problem, but son, let me tell you, quitting is easy, but you sleep better if you follow what you believe in, "no matter how crazy it seems". :-)

    As to "spirits being crushed";

    Hey, I can dream, can't I? That's one thing that can't be taken away from me, it only disappears if I let it go. Hm?

    Xine 0.9.21 plays it just fine for me, sound and everything. Perhaps you need to upgrade or install the windows codecs.

    Yeah.

    It's called "ratings". It's the main reason I quit vegging in front of the TV back in '90. Garbage, sensationalism, and more garbage. Blech. The cable networks took what the Big Three were doing and expanded the garbage. There's very little worth watching nowadays (hey, Emeril on the Food channel is good :)

    PBS rocks, tho.

    I agree with the above posters about KDE. I reboot from my Gentoo install occasionally to use the few windows apps I still use, and the UI makes me feel like I'm wading thru mud.

    I'm a power user, but every time I've showed my system to a windows user the first question has been "Can you install that for me?" :)

    I agree about the docs! I've played with Blender for quite a while and didn't know about undo....Thanks.

    Now I know why I never saw tooltips - for some reason they were turned off in my preferences (set prefs a long time ago and never changed them).

    I just downloaded the latest 2.28 and I am very, very impressed with some of the changes. It's been more than a year and a half since I upgraded. So much to do.

    I don't know that 3d anim is *hard* necessarily, it just requires a certain mindset.

    One thing that Blender could/has? benefitted from is tooltips when you have a mouseover on the buttons.

    Excuse me, not sure about the window Blender, all I do is the linux version anymore. Have they implemented tooltips "balloons" for the windows versions yet?

    At least there are a lot of "crazy scientists" working on it.

    (from the perspective of a lot of the government, and a large majority of the people, that's what it looks like).

    The real question is: Will all this work be remembered when it happens (it will, Tunguska, etc)???

    There'd be a huge nationwide security alert.

    All military forces (those not in the gulf) on top alert.

    Then there'd be a standdown (hopefully) once they figured out what really happened.

    Then there'd be something akin to the Patriot Act, but directed toward easy access to space, and stopping it from happening again.

    Then.....

    I doubt the publicity would have been as big; and also I doubt the rhetoric would have been as severe.

    I have nothing to back up my opinion either. But you made a good point.

    To the trolls out there, here's where I stand: I think MS did a good job at providing "computing for the masses" (whatever that really is) for a long time; but it's time for them to step down. The future will, if not controlled by corporations and corporate-bought politicians, belong to open source software, written by volunteers. Face it. The critical mass has been reached, and there really is no stopping it short of Big Brother style legislation.

    Just like IBM in the 80s, the big corporate model eventually becomes obsolete, and if they can't change, they will lose in the long run. IBM got smart. I hope more companies do.

    What worries me is the damage done to the users and purchasers during those times....sigh....

    Y'know, I've had the shatter attack paper on my bulletin board since the original slashdot article, and I've seen few references to it since.

    Anyone know if this has been successfully used in the "wild"? Is Microsoft even taking this seriously?
