I agree - but Apple just dropped the price and they have decided NOT to include a fancy, custom made, white Apple branded firewire cable because it's a cost to them and most people don't use it.
Personally I think Apple should include a coupon for a free firewire cable - redeemable at any Apple store or for $2 shipping. They get foot traffic and the 25% (guessing) people that want a firewire cable get a cable. I bet, even of the group that use firewire only a small percentage would redeem the coupon. Apple gets to be "the good retailer" for little actual cost.
Apple stops including a firewire cable stock in the box.
No change in iPods themselves or in functionality or in future functionality as far as anyone can tell. Apple knows most PC users throw the firewire cable in a drawer or leave it in the box.
If you want to use firewire and don't already have an extra cable you'll need to buy one. (Or hit up your PC using friend for their old one.)
the rampant adoption of PVRs has left television in a sad state
The state of TV has left TV in a sad state. Do you really think the long slow sad decline of television is because of PVRs that have just gained in popularity in the last few years? If you look up a primetime TV schedule from a couple years ago is it really going to look SO much better than this year's schedule?
It started with cable, and then the addition of additional neworks (FOX, WB, UPN) diluting the brand power of the bg three and PVRs are just the latest thing to which the big networks have ignored for too long and then reacted to poorly. When there are more places for money to go there is less money to go around.
Is forbidding people to record crappy shows going to make those shows better? No, it will drive people to DVDs, movies on demand (why do you think your cable company really wants you to have a PVR?), video games, computer content and maybe, just maybe, watching less TV.
If there is an effect that PVRs have on TV habits is that (at least for everyone I know) chnages the way you relate to TV. You watch when you want to - schedules, which show follows what slot, "Must See TV" mean very little anymore. As much as networks might not like this I think freeing the grip TV has on Americans is a good thing.
Despite what they seem to think nothing guarantees networks a profit or even viewers. Just because you are a three letter network doesn't mean you can't become obsolete.
IBM likes the PPC chip that Apple uses [] even b) been put into use by IBM themselves.
Really? That might surprise IBM . Guess they better stop selling them then...
And if by likes you mean designed and fabbed the 970 for Apple at their request then yes they likes it fine. And while you think it hasn't taken over the world the core design is going to be used in (to varying degrees) in all 3 next gen gaming systems. Since IBM is simply actiing as chip fabricator that ain't bad for them at all. (How many millions of units is that in year 1?)
IBM has Power server line (current performance champ) which is where their real interest lies and they currently have chip fab market mindshare bringing the vast majority of chip fab innovations (copper, SOI, etc) to market first and best and they're willing to work with AMD, Sony, Toshiba or whoever to bring their PowerPC to market in whatever form you might want it in.
It's not taking over the world but they'll settle for getting PPC into as many non-desktop spaces as possible. And IF Apple's OSX work and their Linux efforts happen to make inroads into the desktop space - especially as they push from the top down with Power server pressure - then that's all gravy for them.

TURGID

Unless Lucas himself is playing Chancellor Palpatine I'm not sure how this description applies. Is it really necessary to point out that the guy is really fat in opening crawl? Either that or "turgid" is sometimes used as an oblique reference to having a stiffy... and that REALLY doesn't need to be in the opening crawl, IMHO.
I wasn't interested _at all_ and couldn't have wanted one less... but then when you put the little "i" in front of it... Now I suddenly MUST HAVE ONE!
Anyway I could preorder one based on a bogus 'leaked' photo maybe?

The best description I ever heard of unleashing AOLers on the web was something like: "On a highway of most hobbyists and homebuilt cars AOL is the giant bus belching smoke and fumes as the crazed passengers that curse and throw garbage at others on the road."
I can't think of anything that I'd put anywhere close to those two.
I like V but I think it falls apart some where around chapter 5. It has some brilliant moments but I'd place it well behind W with it's amazing repetition of imagery, long character arcs and sustained, circular story line.
Co-incidentally I just finished the second collected volume of The Invisibles last night and it's very, very good.
I think it hasn't gotten the recognition it deserved because it's a hard read next to other more linear comics and the artwork isn't as good as the story warrants. It certainly won't appeal to everyone but I think it rewards a determined and literate reader.
When I first suggested that M$ was behind/involved in the SCO lawsuits in April based on the one of the later "Halloween" documents people seemed to suggest I was reaching and/or my medictaion dosage was wrong.
You gotta say one thing for M$ - they are predictable. And they're not subtle either but I guess they don't feel they need to be.
The interesting question is not "Why would Micorsoft punish the user?".
The answers to that are:
A: Because they can
B: It is their core competency
C: Bill was picked on as a kid
D: Developers! Developers! Developers!
E: All of the above
Instead the interesting question is "Why does the user choose to be punished by Microsoft?"

PS For everyone that missed it I was posting at least _a little_ tongue in cheek. Except the part about the dog - that really happened to a friend of a friend of mine. Really. Completely shaved.
Not to mention that XBox live will probably ban you and send people to your house and shave your dog for trying to play a game on-line that hasn't been released yet.
And you'd deserve it for logging into a Microsoft server running a Microsoft program that isn't (supposed to be) available yet to advertise that you have it. w00+! 1m l33+!
That's like clicking "Yes - Check to see if my software is legal" on the M$ site when you're running a pirated copy.

What if I want the transvestite Ann Coulter as vice-president instead? Is that acceptable as well?
Mr. President you have said that invading Iraq was a logical extension in the war on terror. Given the horrible security situation in Iraq and all the continuing terrorism how was installing a known terrorist as that country's new leader a positive move in that war?

You missed the best one - when 2000 was still being called NT5 the M$ marketing machine rolled out: "NT5 fixes thousands of bugs in NT4!" The people who were being pitched NT4 for their mission critical work noticed this and asked why they would buy a product with "thousands of bugs". The site was quickly changed to "addresses many issues in NT4".
M$ has a LONG history of holding a product as the end-all of products and then trashing it horribly as soon as the replacement ships.
Dual cores have been in the IBM PPC pipeline for quite a while - of course the (now old) Power4 arch has been multi-core all along.
In all probability the PPC little brother of Power5 (rumored to be called the 975) will debut at 90 nanometers and the next chip will be a ~60 nanometer dual core version possibliy called the 976.
Which if these will be called the G6 is left up to the reader as an exercise. My money is on the 976. Either way the PPC has some serious legs.
