Nethack of course, and GALTRADER! I have killed many an hour here, and it's great! This is the only Galtrader I know of on the net. It is constantly updated with new features, runs in terminal, and is multiplayer. I used to play this all the time back in VAX days, and was overjoyed to find this one! (So don't/. it;)
Beos is my favorite os to date. Every time a announcement like this comes out, I throw confetti in the air! As a musician, Beos was IT! No other os for the pc could even come close to Beos for these reasons:
Personal Edition. Free! (Linux)
Five Minutes to install. (uh..DOS?)
Easy to install! (windows 98 CD, Lycoris)
Boots to desktop in under 9 seconds on a Pentium 225! (Umm...Bios?)
Faster than any other os doing regular tasks like file copying, navagating, ect.
Made for multimedia, audio and video (mac OS 8.5+, win98)
No restarts to change drivers (win2000,xp, os X, Linux)
Never Ever! Crashed on me. (OS X mostly)
Easy to use and figure out.
Yes, it lacks software, drivers, and a user base; that's not because it sucked, it's because they were up against the M$ juggernaut.
OpenBeos won't have to worry about MS, it's free! When openBeos is ready, I am there, and I will never look back.
His name is Ralph. He is a fully functional computer, that can surf the net, play games and write papers at the same time as you walk down the hall, walk to your car or as you're sitting in class.
I would most likely 'Ralph' trying to do all those things simultaneously.
Why not have heat-sensitve film on the outside of your case, sort of a mood ring for your pc? Or vinyl sheets like the ones on fast food resturant windows.(static?) You could then change the color as often as you want. Make the case modular with different color panels or hell, I would just go for an interchangeable front panel.
Eventually everything'll be in a closet somewhere and you'll be wanting to get a new pair of wireless VR glasses..."I really like those new RayBans, the ones with the widescreen option. Do they come in tortise-shell?"
you might want to try some double stick tape on the places where they like to lie. Yes, you'll have some hair sculpture, but they really don't like having their hair pulled out. Eventually they won't go there anymore.
Not to be a bastard, but why would apple do that? Apple WANTS you to upgrade more than anything else. That's where their $$$ is. Why not leave in localtalk too? They want to kill the old tech, and bring in the new!
IOW, they left compatabillity in 'cause you would have had the 'million man march' on apple headquarters if they hadn't. (Apple did take forever to support their video card cards in the g3's - long enough to get some upgrades to g4)
If the govenment is doing such a great job 'mandating' and 'punishing', why are murders still committed? Even better, why are there people doing 5 years for murder, while there is someone in jail for 50 because they had a bag of weed on them? Or the '3 strikes you're out' law being used to put a pizza slice thief away for the rest of their life?
My point is that the government is not doing the job they are supposed to. They have turned into a law factory, cranking out legislation designed to keep themselves rich and comfy, while the rest of the world does the real work.
MY view of right and wrong may differ from someone else's, but I follow one rule. "Treat others the way I would like to be treated."
Sure, it's simple and trite, but what more do you need? If everyone followed it, or at least thought of it before they acted, we wouldn't have/need so many laws, and we wouldn't have so many people trying climb to the top over the bodies of their neighbors.
I found the teeney portion of the article that said,"... broader consumer notice and privacy concerns are showing up in a compromise Internet privacy legislation soon to be introduced by Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, D-S.C."
Senator Hollings is at it again with a new bill. What kind of buddy-buddy shit is he tring to pull this time? First the Consumer Broadband Promotion BS, and now he's our pal with 'The Privacy Act for Kazaa Users'? Sure. What kind of consitutional f-over will this be?
Try looking at Minnesota, Fritz. They want an opt-in approach...
Ahh... I just threw that in. Actually the point is that A$$croft is all in a bunch about it, just like the assised suicide decision and the covering of the statue of 'Justice'. He's got a real problem with personal freedom.
Am I saying I want more kiddie porn? No. Am I saying I want less 'government mandating morallity', less legislation and corporate politics, more personal resposibillity, and less 'screw your neighbor' attitude in our society?? Yes.
Reading it over, I should have been a tad more clear.
As long as the current state of politics is allowed to continue, society IS going to decide what you do with your body. See the reaction of the Federal Government to the recent assisted suicide decision in Oregon or the 'virtual porn' decision. Give 'em a few more years and it will be illegal to pick your nose.
That's the business politicians are in: Manufacture laws to look useful to an apathetic non-voting public. Then they can stay in office forever, and collect a healthy retirement. (Their salary when they were in office, every year until they die.)
If you're THAT in need of staying awake. You can stay awake for days on that stuff. Sure you feel funny, you may vomit, and there is a chance of death, but the devil you know is better than the one you don't, right? Right?
so I can work more, so I can make more money, so I can do more coke, so I can work more, so I can make more money, so I can do more coke, so I can work more, so I can make more money, so I can do more coke,so I can work more, so I can make more money, so I can do more coke,so I can work more, so I can make more money, so I can do more coke.....
Why doesn't the lazy-ass kid go to the library and do some real research, instead of cntrl-C, cntrl-V, like you know he/she's going to?
When I was a kid, I had to laboriously copy the encylopedia word for word, changing the big words and rephasing some paragraphs to throw 'them' off the trail. In hindsight, it probably would have been easier to write it all myself...
I suggest you run a Mac and PC side by side. My P3 800 whups my Mac Quicksilver 733 in Photoshop for the most part. However, I 'like' to use the Mac more and the work 'goes faster'. Go figure that, and to hell with your numbers.
AMD is plainly trying to get on MS's good side, and have more pull in the market. I'm not sure what 'other OS' doesn't or can't support AMD. I guess OS X doesn't.
Microsoft is a monopoly! Windows is an inferior os! Windows could've be taken out by Beos, had Beos gotten there a little faster, and had the marketing department, and a way to get around the exclusive contracts MS forced through. What user wouldn't have liked the impression of an entirely new machine? When I installed Beos on my pentium 225, the difference from win98 was impossible to me. Five second boot, a zillion 3d spinning teapots open at the same time, faster everything. And easier to use and install than linux. (No matter what anyone says, I am not a command line guy) I am a musician, and I just want things to WORK. I don't have time to sit around configuring stuff ('cept at work. ha.)
My proposed soulution to the MS monopoly: Any new x86 computer sold must have NO os preinstalled or included! Perhaps a list, or booklet of OSes capable of running on the machine can be included. This would at least let consumers have a choice, break the stranglehold MS has on OEMs, and introduce consumers to new OSes. Users can pick the OS that is 'right' for them and their needs. This would also push ease of use, better installer methods, and more open standards.
Anyone incapable of learning how to install a new 'easy to install' os, can have webTV. ugh.
Sure, they still have resistors, caps, leds, wire and some breadboards, but the majority of what they sell is cheap-ass phones, and radio controlled toys. Radio shack has become a crappy Best Buy without name brands ('cept RCA, an I won't even go there..;)
I have a Radio Shack a block away from my house, and every time I go in, it's an educational experience.
For them.
I have to explain the difference between ether cable and telephone wiring.
Um. I don't need any help. I know your store better than you do.:P
do it!", is basically saying they are a fucking idiot and watch TV commercials in an amazed state of wonder. Granted, market something enough and you will have moron after moron lining up to buy. Examples:
Britney Spears
McDonalds
The War on Terror/Drugs/Brown People
Windows
Duke Nukem Never
Anything Oprah says
Larry FucKING Ellison and his Big Brother Oracle
SUVs
Wine Coolers
Pet Rocks
Pokemon
Jerry Springer
The Olympics
Creed..I mean Perl Jam...no, I mean Creed.
Scienfuckingtology
Cigarettes
Miss Fake-ass Cleo
DisneyLand/World/Movies
Beanie Babies and the Cultist Collectors of Crap
Packard Bell
Star Wars - The Movie, and the Politicians who want to make it.
Senator Hollings and his Bills o' Plenty (what's the focus group tested name this week?)
Dick Cheney is in perfect health.
Planet Hollingswood
.NET
Michael Jackson
AOL - Now eaiser to use!
The Ab Rider/Blaster/Roller/Master/Baiter
There are many more, of course. Just watch any TV channel, radio station, magazine, ect. The difference between personal responsibillity and corporate responsibillity is easy to see. Corporate responsibillity is to see that you buy what they are selling. YOU are responsible for weighing the pros and cons of the decisions YOU make. You want to play EQ for 40 hours a week? Fine. Just make sure you turned off the oven. You want to smoke a half of Green? Better make sure you still got your job.
In other words: Take the fall you set yourself up for and stop fucking whining about how it's 'not my fault:( Wahhh'
I'm gussing that most everything is sent plaintext over the network and there isn't a client that will do this as of yet, but I'm sure that some smart/.'er will figure one out, code one up, and bless all of work-a-day ameriKa with one.
I really don't have to worry about this, since I'm the 'IT' guy at my company. hehehe
If one of _my_ songs was on the server, where is my $?
If I am not a 'signed' artist, is my mp3 being used to calculate fines/purchases?
Did this make a difference?(* obviously a chilling effect on businesses having mp3 servers, but on individuals?) Won't the employees crank up the 'underground' sharing of music(burning cds at home, trading with coworkers) since the RIAA weasled this deal?
Hopefully, no employee ever buys a RIAA published CD again. Hopefully you don't either.

Ensuring that my 7ghz machine with 40 gigs of ram and 520 TB of HD storage will still choke on a mp12 while scrolling with my MS MindMouse.

I'll give you this here apple with'n bite taken out of it, if'n I can paint yer asteroid fer a spell...
Then, rather than using the actual formula for the 'excercise pill', it'll have rat turds and ephedrine in them.
Maybe they'll bundle a bottle of their 'miracle pills' with one of those electric gut jigglers.
