I'd never heard the term '420', until I went to college, around '94. I never heard it used by anybody but my friends, until about a year out of college. I thought, "Cool, how'd that dude know what 420 is?"
Then about a year after that, everybody was saying it. I was just talking to this girl at a head shop a couple weeks back, and we were talking about the orgins of 420. Now I'll have to go tell her...Thanks man!
...of going out of business. MS knows Linux and GPL'd software are going to destroy there software/business model in a couple years. They are desperatly trying to find a way to stay viable in 5 years. This is just another tatic to maintain a user base.
Palladium is another, but pure FUD. That type of technology isn't hack proof (dongles anyone), and won't catch on. Nothing that is hooked into a network is ever going to be 100% safe, just deal with it.
MS has NO choice but to scale back and realize the gravy train is over. They are going to have to become a real software company now, and work/listen to their customers wants/needs.
I was thinkng the same thing. How do you cusomize hardware on the fly? Doesn't seem like it is very flexable system for creativity/re-engineering/customization.
From what I've seen and done, the "art" of doing computer animation is pushing the limits of your system for a completely new effect, not nescessarily doing it fast or efficently. You'd be keeping yourself from pushing the envelope with a hardware renderer.
By your reasoning we should close libraries, becuase they pirate books. They buy 1 copy a let it get distributed to whom ever want's it...and for a FEE!
People should pirate shit. It helps get the word out and sell more, becuase it helps breed enthusiasm for whatever is being pirated.
These corps should stop worring about collecting every cent, and making us all criminals in the process. They should change thier business model to allow for some piracy. Piracy is IMPOSSIBLE to prevent. So why fight it, you still get money, just not rediculous gobs of it.
I agree. M$ is going one way, and computer literate people are going another. And the people with the know-how (again, the literate), are the ones who drive the computer industry, and the masses just follow.
I say let M$ lead. They'll lead themselves off a cliff, and all the corporate lemmings will follow.
If M$ expects to be around in 10 years, they're going to have to shrink the company, settle for lower profits, and support a Linux distro.
They could give away the distro, and charge for they're apps and service. They won't make nearly as much moola, but that's inevitable anyway. People weren't as savy about computer shams in '95 as they are today, which is why M$ is scrambling to find a way to stay viable. They know in the future there will be no money in the OS market, just apps and service.
I sleep well at night becuase I know M$ killed itself off about 18 months ago, it just takes a long time for 40 billion to bleed out. Then they will be gone. They can't avoid it, and it's too late to stop it. People like me are converting to Linux every day and not looking back.
The last good OS they made was NT4, and that was in '97! Ever since then, they've been focused on locking people to their system, instead of improving it. That's the main reason I'm going Linux. Windows used to be 'alright', now it just sucks. 2k was bad, and XP is worse. I'll have none of it, I DETERMINE WHAT MY OS DOES, not M$.
10 months ago, I stopped using IIS for web servers and switched to Linux/Apache. After a few weeks, I noticed how much the *nix's had changed/improved since I played with BSD in '95.
I told a friend of mine, who is *nix experienced, that Linux will be on 35% of desktops by 2005, based on what I had seen in the improvements. He flatly told me I was, "High on crack. Linux is too hard for the sheep to use."
After playing with 2k and XP, I would have to say M$ stuff and Linux are equal in terms of complexity.
I see M$ going one way, and 'real' computer users going another. Bill has no idea where real computing is going in the future. He thinks he can watch consumers and give them what they want, entertainment crap, he calls this innovation. Meanwhile, people with intelligence, will come up with a new paradigm, the sheep will be suitably impressed, switch, and M$ is stuck with a row boat.
This longhorn security stuff is crap. As long as the OS controls the security, it'll always be highly vulnurable. A single point of entry will always be available, fuck that I say.
Real security would be to have every app run in its own space (like mini-kernels), and share "sets" of data, instead of actual data. The OS would go back to being the hardware cop, and the apps can deal with security in their own terms. One app gets compromised, so what, the system is still safe. Kinda like client-server internet transactions...something like CGI.
I know shit about kernel programming...so flame me if you must.
...I didn't make up the rules, the people who beat us up in high school do. You know, the Law and Business school Frat boys, they are the ones in charge. Just ask Dubya. All bands/artists have that one great album that defines them, and the rest, are just...well...shite.
Moby is WAY off base here. If ALL of his other albums sold well, and this was the first to sell poorly, I would agree with him that - yes, techies are ruining his good standing with the record execs, who think he's a "Big Time Artist".
But the truth is, Moby has only had 1 "pop" (as in popular) album, and that was 'PLAY'. I had heard of Moby before 'PLAY' came out, but it sounded way too experimental(unrefined) for my taste. I like well produced or not produced at all music. Stuff that is recorded and level mixed is not really produced, so keep it off the shelves till it's done. Or if it has a completely raw sound to it, well that can really work for the music too (ala punk). Then it will sell well.
The only reason 'PLAY' (i own it) sold well was becuase of the song 'Porcelin', was different-sounding and refined. '18' is neither. It is now the same-sounding and unrefined electronica/ambient/house mixes everyone plays.
Sorry Moby...YOUR the reason your album isn't selling. Swallow your ego vegan, it's not made of meat.
UHF(ultra low frequency) doesn't work well around tall buildings (like in manhattan). Low frequency microwaves don't like to go through concrete and steel. You get a signal sure...but it's ghosty as hell. That's why it's used for radio in your area. The signal isn't good enough to carry video, but can carry voice OK. VHF(very high frequency) takes a lot more crete 'n steel to block. Since LA has sprawl and not tall, they can get better use out of the UHF band (more people can recieve).
I was using credit cards as an example, not the whole story. ID theft is just one of the symptoms of an insecure environment.
Are there ANY secure environments? Realistically...NO. But if someone at a store where I purchased something steals my number, at least I know where to start looking for the thief.
My whole point is the anonymity of the net is the MAIN reason it is insecure. Though, I wouldn't want it any other way. This would lead to the conclusion that you'll never be able to "out smart" the bad guys. The guy in the article said it all...they have more time to attack than he does to defend.
Kill Mother-Fucking Depeche Mode...that's not nice.

Based on your logic, I should take your computer away and give you an abacus.
There should be security on computers, and shopping on the net. My POINT is, is that you will NEVER be able to control what is going through wires (can't see it directly). I can control who comes through my door (can see it directly).

The only way to secure a transaction/service is to use physical ID/presense. So go shopping at the mall, and share ideas online. Simple solution to a complex problem.
You can put text into your Perl code that doesn't get interpreted, by putting the # symbol at the beginning of the line of text.
A use of this method might be to put text into your code that descibes what the code does. This way you can infer what the code does, without actually pouring over the code line by line.
I've heard this technique is used by sane programmers. They call it "Commenting Code".

Plus, 3DLabs has been working on OpenGL 2.0 to make it better than Direct3D. They also made the first 3D card for a PC that supported texture mapping and geometry acceleration so SoftImage would be worth a shit on a PC.
To bad that they got bought by Creative. Let's hope that corporate Japan doesn't kill the only truly revolutionary 3D maker's R&D.

As a man, I think I can offer a little insight on this topic. MOST (not all) women I've met are more interested in administrative work than scientific. They seem to be more comfortable organizing than engineering.
I learned how to program from a woman, so I know that women are as capable as men. There is no conspiracy to shut women's views out of science. The women that are interested in science, do it.
I would argue that a lot of women I've met don't like the Nerd/Geek type, and don't associate with them to generate an interest in science at an early age. They tend to go after more socially oriented pursuits, like sports and drama. I met very few women in my childhood that had a genuine interest in science.
And I disagree that women posses some unique "scientific viewpoint". Viewpoints come from experience and thought. Not through having two X chromosomes.
And I would also argue that women are already included in science. Unless you feel that, somehow, you are not contributing to science, then I would argue with you. I could list numerous women here that have made contrubutions to science, but that is what google is for.
Seems like you just want to whine about not having a penis to wave around, or spread FUD. However, you could list some reasons why you feel that women are ignored in science, and I will humbly crawl back into my hole and worship Dianna.

I can work for a software company completely over the internet, both in work and in payment
That's nice and all...but companies have accounting forms they send to the government for calculating taxes. The internet has nothing to do with it. The GOV inspecting the accounting record sees that you got paid by the company, now pay YOUR taxes too. Constuction workers don't report to an office, but they still pay taxes.
Enforcing this rule will only further discourage American companies from shipping to Europe
That seems to be the whole point of the Law. Make it too much hassle for US products to ship to the EU. Then the EU companies will have the "fair chance" they need to compete in a world-wide market...(sniker sniker).
What all this has to do with downloaded material is beyond me though. Seems it would be impossible to enforce taxes on stuff that doesn't really exist (i know, the 1's and 0's are real).
You'd need cooperation from US companies, but I can tell you already the EU won't get mine. I'm not a socialist and I don't plan on spending my working hours contributing to the wealth of a foreign nation.
