Start coding with discipline. 'on-the-fly' coding might seem far quicker, but wait till you face large complex problems.
Use a structured methodology such as the CMM model by SEI http://www.sei.cmu.edu/.
The Software CMM has become a de facto standard for assessing and improving software
processes
